  1. Mauro Veglio Barolo Gattera 2019
    Mauro Veglio Barolo Gattera 2019

25 days on the skins and aged for two years in French barrique of which 25% was new.

Lustrous and just mid ruby. Closed and brooding on the nose, with a hint of black pepper. Gorgeous and fresh on the palate but very backward and just hinting at red currant and raspberry. Firm but attractive tannins add real chew to the whole. The oak is practically indiscernible. Very slow to come out, elegant and complex but patience is needed. WALTER SPELLER, www.jancisrobinson.com

The 2019 Barolo Gattera is a powerful, broad wine. Even in the new style favored by Veglio today, the Gattera shows its natural breath along with a decidedly dark expression of La Morra. Sweet black cherry, plum, spice, new leather, licorice and mocha all meld together effortlessly. The Gattera offers lovely upfront appeal married to the classicism of the year. That's a pretty appealing combination in my book. ANTONIO GALLONI

Made from vines planted in 1950, this has aromas of berry, oak-driven spice, camphor and citrusy notes. Showing structure and a weightless finesse, the elegant, full-bodied palate delivers ripe cranberry, Morello cherry, licorice, coconut and coffee bean set against fine-grained tannins. Vibrant acidity keeps it full of energy. Drink 2026–2044 KERIN O'KEEFE

    Mauro Veglio Barolo Castelletto 2020
The 2020 Barolo Castelletto is one of the most closed wines in this range from Veglio. Then again, we are in Monforte. Veins of saline-infused dark fruit, crushed rocks, herbs, mint and coffee open with a bit of coaxing. Nervy, focused tannins wrap it all together in style. I would give the 2020 a few years to soften, as the tannins are quite imposing today. I love the sheer vibrancy here. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous

Precise, well-composed and spicy with aromas of forest berries, herbs, iron and dried orange peel. It’s medium- to full-bodied with chewy tannins. Rather firm yet it has a juicy core of succulent berries and cherries at the center. Focused finish with a sanguine character to it. Try after 2027. JAMES SUCKLING

  5. R. Pouillon Grande Vallee Champagne NV
    R. Pouillon Grande Vallee Champagne NV
    Pinot dominant blend
The NV Extra Brut Grande Vallée is a blend of 65% Pinot Noir, 20% Pinot Meuneir and 15% Chardonnay harvested in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Mutigny, Epernay, Avenay-Val-d'Or and Festigny, 45% of the blend is from the 2019 vintage, 30% from 2018, both aged in oak, and 25% reserve wines kept in foudre. Golden color leads onto an earthy, expansive nose that has an overtone of ripe red bell pepper and juicy plum, with an oxidative edge from wood ageing. The palate is lighter than either color or nose suggest, flowing with inherent juiciness on a body that has traction and Pinot structure, but also bright freshness. Individual and surprisingly light. Dosage is 2gr/L. ANNE KREBIEHL MW

Aromas of dried orange and apple with spices, such as saffron and cloves. Full-bodied and layered red with lots of spices on the palate, as well as orange-peel, stone and light strawberry flavors. Layered and structured. More textured than some. Good one for food. 65% pinot noir, 15% chardonnay and 20% pinot meunier. Based on 2019 and 2018 with reserve wines. Dosage 2g/L. JAMES SUCKLING

…Here the intention is not of consistency but of maximising quality each year. The colour has a notable peachy hue. The gently lifted, expressive nose offers appley fruit complemented by white peach and vanilla. A touch of toast adds to the complexity. The palate has even more charm, being intense and silky with a seamlessly integrated mousse. Gentle and easily approachable, this is a fruit-forward style. ESSIE AVELLAN MW

The NV Extra-Brut Cuvee R is 90% Chardonnay, 5% Pinot Noir and 5% Pinot Meunier aged in cask. This is a beautifully precise, vibrant Champagne that emerges with attractive layers of perfumed, expressive fruit wrapped around a rich, creamy finish. The presence of red grapes and oak give the wine a level of depth and richness that deftly balances the intense minerality of Vertus and the house style. This is Lot 6503, disgorged: March, 2009.

  9. Mauro Veglio Barolo Gattera 2020
    Mauro Veglio Barolo Gattera 2020

For co-owner Alessandro Veglio, 2020 is ‘a 2018 with more flesh’. Gattera's limestone soils provide good structure. A quite stern nose of cherry kernel, rhubarb, fresh violet and blood orange is followed by a savoury and filigree palate, with a texture to the tannins of rare elegance. Full and broad on the finish, with hints of cherry kernel. ALDO FIORDELLI, www.decanter.com

The 2020 Barolo Gattera is a dark, at times somber, La Morra Barolo. Black cherry, plum, lavender, licorice, dried herbs and mocha all meld together. Pliant and deep, with notable concentration and breadth on the palate, the Gattera is a fine example of this site. Today, the 2020 is a bit closed, but I see that as a positive. ANTONIO GALLONI

    Mauro Veglio Barolo Arborina 2020
The 2020 Barolo Arborina is a gorgeous wine from this La Morra site. Crushed rose petal, mint, blood orange, spice, tobacco and underbrush all open in glass, supported by bright acids that lend energy. This mid-weight, translucent Barolo is pure class. I especially admire its dimension and nuance. Give this a few years to soften. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous

A focused and lively red with aromas of cherries, dried leaves, lavender and crushed white pepper follow through to a medium body with chewy tannins and fresh acidity. Vivid and crisp with a delicious, juicy finish. Try after 2026. JAMES SUCKLING

Aromas of blue flower, dark-skinned berry and French oak lead the way on the attractive 2020 Mauro Veglio Arborina. Picking up where the nose leaves off, the palate offers juicy Morello cherry, coconut, vanilla and coffee bean alongside taut, fine-grained tannins. Drink 2028–2034. KERIN O’KEEFE

    Mauro Veglio Barolo Gattera 2021
The Mauro Veglio 2021 Gattera is another knock-out new release from this excellent estate. It opens with heady aromas of mature woodland berry, fragrant purple flower, exotic dark spice and a whiff of eucalyptus while the delicious, elegantly structured palate features ripe black cherry, raspberry compote, vanilla and licorice. Hailing from estate grapes in La Morra, it’s a great expression of the site and of the vintage. (96)

  13. Piero Busso Barbaresco Albesani Vigna Borgese 2019
Piero Busso Barbaresco Albesani Vigna Borgese 2019
Inviting aromas of sandalwood, blue flower, resin and mocha come to the forefront. The aromas follow through to the savory, rounded palate along with dried cherry, anisette and ground clove. It's polished and accessible, with fine-grained tannins. It closes on the warmth of alcohol. Drink through 2028. KERIN O'KEEFE, Wine Enthusiast

The 2019 Barbaresco Albesani Vigna Borgese is another terrific wine in this range from Piero Busso. Ample and expressive, with terrific depth, the 2019 offers up copious dark red fruit, blood orange and sweet spice tobacco. Firm tannins wrap it all together. The Borghese offers an appealing mix of ripe, racy fruit and mid-weight structure. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous

Busso bottles two cuvées from his 1.2 hectares of vines in the Albesani cru (the other is the Viti Vecchie offered below). On the western hills above Neive, Albesani is one of the shining stars of Barbaresco. In his Barbaresco MGA, Alessandro Masnaghetti writes that here, “…the combination of soil, stature and exposure creates one of the greatest vineyards of the Langhe”. The vines were planted between 30 and 70 years ago at 260 metres above sea level on soils of limestone, clay and marl with an ideal southwest exposure. This fermented naturally in tank, then aged in 25-hectolitre cask for 26 months.

  14. Piero Busso Barbaresco Barbaresco San Stunet 2019
Piero Busso Barbaresco Barbaresco San Stunet 2019

San Stunet is the only Busso vineyard not in Neive, and instead is in the village of Trieso. Busso farms 1.5 hectares of vines, which sit at 400 metres in altitude on a steep gradient (16%). San Stunet soils are mostly yellow marl with a lot of limestone. The Busso vines lie on the southeast face of the ridge which delivers the deepest and most articulate Nebbiolo of this cru. The site is late ripening, usually picked 10 days after the estate’s other vineyards.

The winemaking is identical to the Albesani Vigna Borgese, but this has both more flesh and is punchier, suggesting both more tannins and acidity. Decant it and serve it in a Burgundy glass and you’ll be rewarded with a wonderful Nebbiolo loaded with character (dark cherry, honey, leather), depth and structure. It would ideally get 10 to 15 years bottle age, but if not, then lots of air.

    Pol Roger Brut Vintage 2018

The 2018 Brut Vintage is absolutely delicious, just as it was last year. Floral and citrus notes give the 2018 lovely aromatic lift to play off its mid-weight personality. This is a classy, polished Vintage Champagne marked by notable brightness. Airy, elegant and silky in feel, the 2018 is an absolute delight. ANTONIO GALLONI

Pol Roger's 2018 vintage is showing many of the fine facets of the year upon release already, open and giving in style with roasted pear, ripe apricot and grapefruit skin, lightly creamy and developing richness in pecan and brown pastry. The Pinot Noir leads, relatively structured for the year while showing hints of the smoke and spice to come with further age. A wine that flows with some of the ease and charm of 2018, but that promises a fairly early – if rewarding – unfolding in bottle. DECANTER

Made from 60% Pinot Noir and the rest Chardonnay and pouring a vibrant silver/yellow color, the 2018 Champagne Brut Vintage (like all these wines) was aged in stainless steel without any oak. In the glass, it opens to springy and dewy floral aromas of honeydew melon, fresh flowers, citrus blossoms, and pastry dough. Medium-bodied and inviting, it’s approachable now and takes on a more mineral character on the palate without ever feeling austere. All its components move seamlessly through the palate, with a refined mousse and a kiss of sunny feel on the finish, but it’s clean and refined all the way through. This is going to improve with age, but it’s quite enjoyable now. Drink over the coming 15 or so years. It was made exclusively from Premier Cru and Grand Cru villages, was aged for 6 years on the lees JEB DUNNUCK

The 2018 Brut Vintage, with a dosage of seven grams per liter, exhibits a delicate bouquet of ripe orchard fruits, pineapple, peach, sweet spices and pastry, followed by a full-bodied, rich and elegantly creamy mid-palate that segues into a fleshy core of fruit with a penetrating, long and saline finish. Admirers of Pol Roger’s style will love it. WINE ADVOCATE

Pale lemon with a lively and persistent mousse and an attractive nose of Spring flowers, hawthorn and apple turnover, a hint of iodine too. Subtle, the wine is composed yet incisive, fresh and yet profound, with orchard fruit and a citric cut shaping the palate, and notes of verbena and sourdough in support. Expertly crafted and forthright, without indulging to excess, the 2018 is poised and confident but far from brash and with a clear potential to evolve gracefully. The wine broadens beautifully with a little time in the glass, with hints of honey and biscuit evidenced, and will do so equally impressively in bottle over the next five years and beyond. Light yellow. Mineral-tinged peach, melon and pear aromas display excellent clarity, picking up a subtle floral quality with aeration.  Supple and seamless on the palate, offering vivid honeydew and pit fruit flavors accented by a vibrant lemon zest quality.  Finishes very long, silky and precise, with an echo of juicy melon and strong mineral lift. (58% Chardonnay and 42% Pinot Noir; 3.5 g/l dosage; L329 9160): Light, orange-tinged pink. Lively spice- and mineral-accented red berry and citrus fruits on the nose, with a hint of cherry pit adding depth. Vibrant and precise on the palate, offering tangy, refreshingly bitter-edged blood orange and strawberry flavors. Clean, focused and stony on the dry, penetrating, persistent finish, which leaves a suave honeysuckle note behind. JOSH RAYNOLDS

  44. Louis Roederer Vintage 2016
    Louis Roederer Vintage 2016
62% pinot noir and 38% chardonnay from "La Riviere" vineyards from villages Cumieres and Chouilly. Rose created by a long and gentle infusion of pinot noir and co-fermented with chardonnay. The 2016 vintage was characterised by particularly marked weather variations: spring was cool, wet and relatively late whereas summer was warm and dry with a heatwave in late August followed by dry and sunny weather over the harvest period which was highly beneficial to the ripening of the grapes. 45. Benoit Lahaye Brut Nature NV
    Benoit Lahaye Brut Nature NV
From brown limestone clay soils in Bouzy (80%) and Ambonnay (20%). 90% Pinot Noir and 10% Chardonnay with reserve wines making up 40%. Spends a minimum of 30 months on lees. Bottled with no dosage and, “off the record” says Benoit, has no sulphur added.  Delicately scented with bright ripe Pinot Noir fruits and deep layers of mineral and briny complexity with fresh red apple, a little mushroom and some oak complexity. Sweet ripe red apple and red berry fruits burst onto the palate tapering to a finer more mineral flavour spectrum before a long tangy finish. This is incredibly sweet and ripe for a Brut Nature. It would be hard to pick it as zero dosage. Vinous, Importer

    Giacomo Fenocchio Barolo 2020
The fantastic 2020 Barolo from Giacomo Fenocchio is the best entry level offering of the firm's Barolo range I've had to date. It has classic Nebbiolo aromas of ripe red berry, blue flower, new leather and spice while the utterly delicious, polished palate delivers succulent Morello cherry, baking spice, licorice and tobacco before a minty close. Velvety tannins provide seamless support while fresh acidity keeps it balanced. Drink 2026-2035. KERIN O'KEEFE
