    Freycinet Louis Pinot Noir 2023
This is an excellent pinot noir to drink. It's complex, it's lively, it has a bit of depth to it, and it feels real. It tastes of toast and cherry plum, sweet spice and undergrowth, mint and something more earthen, almost like terracotta. Tannin curls through the juiciness of the fruit, an d the finish has very good extension. A tick in every box. No hesitation in recommending this. GARY WALSH

  7. Domaine Font de Courtedune Cotes du Rhone Village 2022
Domaine Font de Courtedune Cotes du Rhone Village 2022
Regional specificity in the key here, upfront, personable and loaded with charm. It's great drinking and just the right speed for day to day consumption. Red and dark fruits aplenty. Wafts of spice and touches of grit from the tannin. Nice push across the palate where the perky acidity keeps that generosity in check. Hints of dried herbs and flowers appear on the nose and touch the palate from time to time. Really, this is such a lovely wine. A little larger in size than last year's rendition but that's a good thing, adds a little more cuddle. ROSCOE

(On the 2019) Light, fresh raspberry aromas, with a touch of cherry. Fresh and precise. Only medium-bodied, this is very drinkable. A light mineral touch brings further freshness to the finish, which is surprisingly long for a Côtes-du-Rhône. Not overly fat or heavy. This is a steal - a delicious Côtes-du-Rhône. 8. Eastern Peake Persuasion Rose 2022
    Eastern Peake Persuasion Rose 2022
This is from Owen Latta’s family label here with the Eastern Peake range with the fruit for this wine is grown by long term friends Frank & Kerry Walsh, directly over the road on the same soil type as Eastern Peake weathered basalt on grey loam. Frank first established with pinot noir in 1995 then a second 1 acre planting in 2003 with Syrah (Clone PT23).

The Syrah  was whole bunch pressed, fermented in large format Stockinger Austrian oak with indigenous yeasts, 11 months lees contact, racked, estate bottled. A small amount of sulphur post malo & pre bottling. No fining, filtering or Tinkering. Thoughtfully produced to reflect on where it was grown.

You would have to go a long way to find three more open-hearted and utterly committed winemakers; the world is their oyster, their ambitions unlimited. JAMES HALLIDAY

Invariably lovely wines from Onannon. GARY WALSH

A blend of seven vineyards across the sub-regions of Tuerong, Main Ridge, Shoreham, Red Hill, Merricks and Flinders.

Talk about pristine. This Pinot Noir is presented in immaculate condition. Dark cherries, a splash of strawberry, toast and chicory notes, and rounds of turned earth and assorted dry/roasted spices. It’s fresh, crunchy, silken and spicy at once, the finish then well formed and well sustained. It has substance but mostly it has flow. I can’t fault this. (94) CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front

These are your quintessential overachievers in the wine game. Everything is done right here. They are slick wines that offer mass appeal and hit the high registers of drinkability, but there is more than enough suave, subtly nuanced, elements to keep even the most serious nerd happy.

  11. Hobo Wine Camp Folk Machine Parts and Labour Red 2022
Hobo Wine Camp Folk Machine Parts and Labour Red 2022
This is the second vintage that Grenache has dominated the P&L blend. The 2022 is a blend of Grenache from Mangels Ranch in Suisun Valley, Cedar Lane in Arroyo Seco, and Waddington Ranch in Mendocino, Carignane from Lolonis, Maria Martinson, and Castañon all in Mendocino, and Syrah from Vecino in Potter Valley. There is a good amount of whole cluster and carbonic maceration through the lots keeping everything fresh and fun. As always, the blend was made immediately after harvest and the wine was aged in a combination of French oak foudres and stainless steel tanks.

Oh yum! This is such a joy to drink. A cracking drop here from the legend that is Kenny likitprakong of Hobo. He was telling us that this was his house wine. The one that he has cases of to rip the corks off when mates come round, the BBQ fires up and a long warm weekend is about a kick off and we can see why. This is hard to put down once it's in your glass.

It's all about the red fruits here with fresh picked red cherry and raspberry all vying for position at the front of the pack. Some pretty violet notes swirl around and as this opens up some savoury whole black peppercorn and foresty bits make themselves heard. Its lithe and fresh bursting onto the palate with that core of red berry fruit. Clean and pure just sizzling with energy. A joy to drink and would happily take a brief chill if you were so inclined.

  15. Ata Rangi Crimson Pinot Noir 2023
Ata Rangi Crimson Pinot Noir 2023
A departure from the typically broad-shouldered expression of Crimson, this is a reflection of the 2023 vintage. Instead of making three single vineyards, plus the estate pinot and the Crimson pinot in 2023, winemaker Helen Masters responded to the cool, wet conditions by crafting an estate-wide blend for the Crimson as the only still pinot noir in the cellar that year. This is clearly a lighter year, but there’s also a delicate, elegant side which emerges from the shadows—it’s an ethereal wine which speaks in whispers and echoes.

Light ruby. Floral, delicate nose with subtle aromas of pot-pourri, wild berry and rosehip. A light, crisp palate with crystalline, light-weight tangy flavours and a subtly savoury finish which rests on bony, chalky, fine tannins. Volnay-esque in its expression of lightness and clarity, like lace stained with cherry. Accessible now but it will unfurl and evolve within the context of its more contemplative, delicate style, at least in the mid-term. STEPHEN WONG MW, Real Review

Giant Steps Yarra Valley Pinot Noir 2023

A 50/50% mix of upper and lower Yarra fruit; 35% whole bunches and matured in French oak (10% new). A bright crimson red. After a few good few swirls, aromas of ripe raspberries, black cherries, wild herbs and some crushed violets soon emerge. The palate, though, doesn't need much coaxing, and this silken, sappy wine has excellent depth and persistence. Will be even better six to 12 months from now. 96 PHILIP RICH, wine companion

Neudorf Toms Block Moutere Pinot Noir 2023

Grown on the Moutere clay gravels. The wine blossoms with dark cherries, black plums and balsamic glaze. A smattering of dark spices, clove, cassia and five-spice. The wine bristles with firm tannins and threads of taut acidity. It is sumptuous in its plumpness and yet maintains a sturdy framework filled with woody spice. This is mixing business with pleasure, a savvy investment for the cellar but equally joyful drinking now. This sets up the Neudorf pinot scene with great expectations. Thrilling. Crushed raspberry and wild bracken with a hint of charry earthy that provides a counterpoint to the fresh fruit. A lovely lift of red cherries, pomegranate and white nectarines leads into a fleshy and textured core. Subtle herbal tones of fennel and dried thyme and wild strawberries join in the chorus too. There's presence and intensity thanks to the riper 2022 vintage, balanced by a spine of chalky acidity. Pleasing phenolics on the finish add a tantalising chew, like biting through peach skins. A hint of white pepper to finish adds a twist (reminds me of adding pepper to strawberries, shouldn't work but it does!). Keep this delightful thirst slaker on hand this summer. GABRIELLE POY, PWS

Paradigm Hill Pinot Noir L'Ami Sage 2020 375ml
George is winding back his production at Paradigm Hill and that is a real shame but with no new generation to take the lead he will keep at it all-be-it with a reduced output. His 2020's are some of the best in recent years and the Lamis Sage is always the more structured and tightly wound of the two single vineyards so being a half bottle and with a few years under its belt this one is a ripper!

Intense, enticing darker red fruit aromas followed by the expected savoury, toasty, fleshy and earthy character of this wine For L’ami sage, there is also a generosity together with a long complex and balanced fresh finish. Super fine tannins melt away easily into the gossamer fruit. Lovely drop!

Roche de Bellene Bourgogne Pinot Noir Cuvee Reserve 2022
From that mad-man Nicolas Potel this is no second thought, left-over grapes, I'll see what I can do, situation for his second label. After starting Domaine de Bellene in 2008, shortly after he launched the maison side working closely with the same growers and domains that Potel had built relationships with over the past 15 years, living and working in Beaune. Like his domaine, he chooses to focus on individual terroirs mainly from old vines (40 years old or older) only working with sites that are BIO certified or at the very least farmed according to the principles of lutte rasionee. This philosophy allows Nicolas to consistently produce the expressive, terroir-driven style that is his vision at affordable prices.

The entry-level red Burgundy comes from vineyards in the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits. The vines range in age from 30 to 80 years and are farmed sustainably. The major part of this wine is matured in barriques and the remainder is done in stainless steel. This maintains a pure style with bright fruit and a fine texture.

This looks great in 2022! A heady mix of red and black cherry, some ground sweet spice and bit of black pepper, savoury elements winking at you behind the plush fruit profile. Lovely drive of fruit that rushes your palate slowly fading away revealing a little savoury goodness in some darker spice and fresh crushed herb notes. A great combo of freshness, soft juicy fruits and fine boned structural elements woven in.

Young Philippe Collotte is one of the several new stars of Marsannay. ROBERT PARKER JR, The Wine Advocate.

Depth of aroma – to match the depth of colour – pure and floral too – that’s lovely. Hmm – what a lovely Bourgogne – not a wine of impact, rather one of melting, fluid, delicious flavour – just a beautiful Bourgogne – ‘we really want a Bourgogne that’s easy to approach and has lovely pinot fruit…” BILL NANSON, Burgundy Report

The Collottes have been grape growers in Marsannay for four generations, but it wasn’t until 1981 that a young, 16 year-old Philippe Collotte bottled the first wine under the name of Domaine Collotte. He subsequently leased some mature vineyards of about 40 years of age in both Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny, to further expand the domaine’s repertoire.

In 2013 Philippe was joined by his daughter Isabelle, who had just completed her viticulture and oenology studies at the Lycée Viticole de Beaune. Whilst Isabelle focusses particularly on the production of the domaine’s white wines, there is no doubt that her addition to the team has helped refine the quality of the wines across the board.

It was produced with 75% Monastrell and 25% Garnacha and matured in oak foudre. It has an elegant rusticity compared with Las Gravas or Pie Franco bottlings, with a combination of herbs, flowers, earth and tree bark, with very fine tannins and a chalky finish. 'Rimauresq is one of a handful of estates in the Côtes de Provence designated Cru Classé (“classified growth”), with more than a century of elite rosé behind it, and after tasting this latest arrival, I’m reminded of how transcendent a proper Provençal rosé can be. There’s a lot going on here.  Put your nose in the glass and the fragrant scrub-brush of Provence sprouts up around you, beckoning you to the azure shores of the Mediterranean. Load up. Siren song aromatics of strawberries and cream, a little tarragon and mineral and maybe a little vanilla lead you head first into the glass. So enticing and welcoming and it continues on the palate with the same ebullient fruit held within a soft and pillowy mousse creating an almost sensual decadent impression. Alongside that though is real energy and vigour elevating the fruit and spice (and a little sage) element in the wine. It's so beuatiuflly put together this wine and would leave a number of it's Champagne cousins for dead and ashamed of their pricing. Gorgeous sparkling. MICHAEL MCNAMARA

One of the crew called this “soft and mellow” I can see where that comes from, it certainly has a lovely mouth filling quality and all those billowing soft bubbles provide such a sensual cushioning effect, but the wine lacks nothing for racy energy either. I don't think its soft, I think it's lush!
Also, I love the fine chalkiness that punctuates the fruit. Like its BdB sibling the lights are flashing and the sirens are cranked up, they don’t shy away from the winemaking and let’s be honest, that’s what makes Champa… sparkling wines like this so exciting. Even with that distinct autolytic creaminess the wines overall impression is one of flirtatious elegance. It is my pick of the two, but only just, and it pips its sibling on refinement if not substance. ROSCOE

  47. Mittnacht Freres Cremant d'Alsace Extra Brut NV
Mittnacht Freres Cremant d'Alsace Extra Brut NV

Mittnacht Freres have been producing biodynamic wines for quite some time and are well known for their refined wines. They own some parcels in the Grand Crus like "Rosaker" or "Osterberg". We are looking forward to introducing more of their range some time soon.

This Appellation 'Cremant D'Alsace" is made using the traditional method with a secondary fermentation in bottle. It's aged for 32 months before disgorging.

Subtle sparkling with notes of pears, apples and peach, on a festival of light and very elegant bubbles. The palate is dry, notes of granny smith apples and hazelnut, built around a nice, ripe acidity. Delicious festive number !

Certified biodynamic - Tasmania's first

Wild strawberry here with some twiggy, foresty goodness edging in on the red cherry and wild berry fruit. Long and layered with a little sappy goodness, some Christmas spice and a touch of wild game. Its not a big pinot but we wouldn't call it light either. It staddles a really lovely middle ground here not leaving you want for succulent fruit or structure and complexity.
