    P & A Vin de France Grenache Syrah 2021
The P & A wines are from our friend and Burgundy madman Nicolas Potel. These are the wines that epitomise the term vin-de-soif. These are absolutely gluggable, definitely chillable and straight-up delicious fair from the southern reached of France where Nicolas, via is network of winemaking legends sources fruit from top growers.

This little beauty is crafted by Potel's partner in crime Stephane Aviron who brings his consdiderable talents to the table. there is an elegance and purity to the wine with underlying terroir drive that shouldn't be a surprise to anyone who tried Nicola or Stephane's wines.

Wafts of raspberries, black plums and sweet spices lure you in. The core is a vibrant and buoyant mass of black and red berries, wrapped in an elegant framework. Subtle notes of rosemary come from a thoughtful use of whole bunch. This overdelivers hands down on its humble price point, no need to second guess here. GABRIELLE POY

A serious Cotes-du-Rhone. Full forest berry fruit with delicate spice, bitter chocolate and licorice notes. Impressive depth and some real structure on the full-bodied palate. I love the way the generous, rather fine tannins carry the long, spicy and fresh finish. A cuvee based on 60% grenache, mostly from the Vaucuse region, with about 30% syrah from the Gard and small amounts of mourvedre and other traditional grape varieties. JAMES SUCKLING

  9. Bleasdale The Wise One Tawny 750ml
Bleasdale The Wise One Tawny 750ml
Fruitcake aromas with attractive nutty complexity; a soft touch of rancio and rather laid-back acidity makes the wine a warm and friendly style for a cold winter's evening. JAMES HALLIDAY

Ok. A man of few words on this one but let me assure you that this is straight up, bloody delicious and yes, we agree its perfect for a cold winter eve. This hidden little beauty from Bleasdale is matured in small oak casks in the rafters of the winery's hot tin roof for a minimum of 7 years before blending. The result is a uniquely Aussie inspired tawny style that is so well priced you might as well by a six pack and sip it to your hearts contents all winter long and never feel guilty.

Rammed full of clove, five-spice. Licorice root, treacle, honey, plenty of baked walnut and edged with roasted brown sugar. There is that lovely edging of dried citrus peel and fruit cake mix too. Sweet and lush but not as cloying as you might think… don't get us wrong though, its sweet, and that's how we like it.

  10. Delas Cote du Rhone Saint Esprit 2021
Delas Cote du Rhone Saint Esprit 2021

One of our favourite rhone reds year-in and year-out. There may be nothing quite as satisfying as a good value Rhone red and this one always delivers. Delas Freres is based in the beautiful northern Rhone with a large holding of their own vineyards supplemented by long-term relationships with quality growers all over the rhone. How they manage to put so much goodness into a bottle at this price is an astonishing feat to say the least.

While this indulgent red reflects the north’s regional dominance of Shiraz over Grenache, it reflects the darker fruits and a spicy earthiness often found in the southern Rhone, where this wine hails from. Silky rather than heavy, it still feels concentrated with bright, bubbly raspberry fruits complimented by a little dollop of wild, blackberry fruit. A waft of violets and pastille fruit just add to its appeal.

Never judge a book buy it's cover right? Mostly, you see the colour of this and you at least know you are on good footing to begin with. It's pale, like a blush of peach. Properly dry with a splash of sweet citrus, mandarin, ripe red grapefruit, a just tart orange aspect and then some lovely peach notes. All this is underpinned by a bright, clear, palate cleansing freshness and a nice pithy texture that licks at the sides of your mouth. It's long and energising, it both slackens the thirst with its buoyant, uplifting feel and engages the old taste buds and sets the salivary glands quivering. Who doesn't love Rose like this? Wirra Wirra Farmer's Heart Grenache 2023
This came off mainly old vines, with 74% 95 years of age or more; matured in older oak. Ripe, but a product of the cool year, this drinks towards mid-weight, with strawberry, wild raspberry, sour cherry, damson, pomegranate and medicinal herbs coiled into a thoughtful and intricate warp and weft of tannin. There's a pleasing sour-fruited tension to this, which complements the grip, the combination aching for food. The ripeness is à point, the structure bravely savoury and compelling. It's delightful, but no pushover. (95) MARCUS ELLIS, winecompanion.com

A delightful and bright grenache that captures the mood of this season in tangy raspberry fruits accented with all of grenache's distinctive hallmarks in rhubarb and dried herbs. Fine, saline tannins characterise McLaren Vale. Classy. TYSON STELZER

Bright with vivid acidity and powdery tannin, it cuts a super-spicy savoury line across the palate and represents the Torbreck style with much aplomb.  (94) DAVE BROOKES, Halliday Wine Companion - SPECIAL VALUE

  16. Rive Droite Rive Gauche Cotes du Rhone 2020
Rive Droite Rive Gauche Cotes du Rhone 2020
Rive Droite Rive Gauche simply means right bank, left bank and the name derives from fruit for the wine being sourced from both sides of the river - the grenache coming mainly from the left (gauche) and the Syrah from the village of Daumazan (on the rive droite), near Tavel. It is also a French film starring the rotund wine-nut actor Gerard Depardieu - fun fact!

This is a lovely fresh and crunchy styled Rhone from our friends at Rive Droite. There is touch of thyme and bay over red spiced fruits, layered with a little bit of red liquorice. This is a medium bodied rendition with a pure core of raspberry, wild strawberry and splash of black berry fruit in the mix. Its lithe with a lovely fresh cut to the sweet fruits that makes this look wonderfully elegant and damn easy to like.

Savoury tannins and ripe black cherries with a note of liquorice prevail in this blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre and the ABV is relatively high, but the wine has balance with a fresh, lifted finish. It shows red berries, dried thyme, bay leaves and loads of baking spices on the nose, following through to a medium body with silky tannins and texture. It's a serious Cotes-du-Rhone with plenty of fun and juicy fruit and a kick of spices lifting the finish. From organically grown grapes JAMES SUCKLING

The smoke and black pepper notes of syrah are intertwined with the fleshiness and mellower personality of the grenache grape in a very convincing manner. Behind this is a solid base of supple tannins that has been expertly crafted STUART PIGOTT

Medium-bodied, at most, fresh and crisp, slightly earthy, hazelnuts, spiced poached strawberry and red cherry, emery board tannin, a distinct ‘mineral’ feel, and a cool spicy/savoury finish of brightness and excellent length. Aphelion Welkin Grenache 2023

Sourced from a range of Vale sites, this is at the ‘vin de soif’ end of the Aphelion grenache roster. Grenache in this zone can be juicy and jubey, but not this. It’s a thread that runs through the Welkin range, with fruitful pleasure in a mid-weight zone tempered by savoury structure. Macerated strawberries and tart raspberries, redcurrant, red licorice, rhubarb and orange, pink peppercorn and a seasoning of dusty spice. It’s bright and lithe, savoury and zippy – a fine all-rounder at table that can take a gentle chill. MARCUS ELLIS, Halliday Wine Companion

Seems like my brilliant treatise on whelks fell on deaf ears. Oh well, sometimes it feels like I’m feeding strawberries to pigs here. And speaking of strawberries…

Poached strawberry, raspberry, lemon thyme and rosemary perfume, hazelnut, candied orange peel and mint. Juicy, strawberry, kind of sweet and succulent, but also has a little savoury stony stuff, nutty things and solid length too, and gee it’s a fun little wine. Nice. Kind of like a big rosato in a way. Pete Schell's Papillon and I have had a thing going for a while. If I spy it on a wine list it's often what I'll go for as it consistently delivers a great drinking experience and matches a range of foods. This year it's 66/31/3% grenache/cinsault/counoise 3%. Spacious, sapid and energetic, it's all raspberries and cranberries daubed with exotic spice, rose petals, sour cherry, dried herbs and stone. That whoosh of sour red plum at the end gets me every time. So good! (95) DAVE BROOKS, thewinecompanion

This is 66% grenache, 31% cinsault and 3% counoise. Always the shapeshifter is Papillon.
Cool and fresh. Lively and bright. A chillable, slurpy, crunchy red emerges. Red cherry, raspberry, cranberry, alpine herbs, some menthol-like lift, aniseed and pepper, a touch of white chocolate. Good energy here. Some real get up and go. Freshness implicit. Cool. MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Front

Light cherry red hue. Raspberry, blueberry and anise aromas. Bright on the palate: juicy raspberry fruits with hints of rosemary and dusty earth adding complexity. 35. Exopto Bozeto de Exopto Rioja 2023
Exopto Bozeto de Exopto Rioja 2023

This wine has dropped the Bozeto styling and is now simply called Exopto. New name, same vibrant, great-value Rioja. This pan-regional expression of Rioja’s three principal grape varieties is conceived as a lively, easy-drinking introduction to the range. Most entry-level wines from this region are based on Tempranillo (a variety easier and more profitable to grow), yet here Garnacha represents 65% of the blend. This Garnacha hails from very old vines in the sandy, river-stone terroirs of El Agudo and Al Casillón at Alfaro (Rioja Oriental). The Tempranillo is drawn from a selection of mature vines in Ábalos (high-county Rioja Alta), and some Ábalos Graciano adds freshness and finesse.

The wine ferments in a combination of concrete and steel tank, then ages for six months in concrete and 5,000-litre oak vats. These days, Tom includes a measure of semi-carbonic maceration for extra buoyancy. Opening with perfumes of dusky berries and well-judged spice, this is a wonderfully aromatic, restaurant-friendly wine. It’s a wine that impresses with its precision rather than power. Even so, the warmer year gives an open, juicy wine and a great deal of drinking pleasure: spice, vibrancy and velvety flow flecked with notes of espresso, dried flowers and wild woody herbiness to go with its smoky blackberry fruit. If you’re looking for a bright, succulent grower Rioja, few will deliver better value than this.

Tempranillo leads with cherry, anise, cola and black plum accented by spicy stem and skin notes; the grenache percolates up with wild raspberry and rosehip notes while giving the palate a more open feel, moderating its partner’s tannins through the middle, cleaning up the tail and giving this real gastronomic purpose. Spinifex Grenache Gris 2023

It’s a new plot of vineyard (on the estate) and this is the first year where there was enough crop to make/release a wine. It was fermented wild in old oak and then matured in a (not new) 1000l foudre.

Time in old oak was important here because it’s added texture to what is, at heart, a structural white wine. It’s a wine of skin and bones, stones and spices, its dryness a key part of its appeal. We’re almost into brine territory here, or stones sitting in a saline solution, perhaps. It knows what it wants, and it wants for food. This is a good, interesting wine, worth buying and drinking, and future releases will be worth following. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front

Ogier Le Temps Est Venu Cotes du Rhone Rouge 2022
Mostly Grenache and Syrah, the 2022 Côtes Du Rhône Le Temps Est Venu is up-front and loaded with charm, offering lots of black raspberry and redcurrant-like fruit as well as peppery garrigue and spice. It's medium to full-bodied, round, layered, and beautifully balanced. JEB DUNNUCK

The Story Wines Super G Red Blend 2022
It's not heavy but it's so wild with spice and so generally captivating that it's hard to put it down. This is a cracker of a wine. Red and blue berried fruit flavours, black pepper notes, a mezcal aspect and flings of roasted nuts. It's ripe and robust, in a mid-weight way, but the real key here is that it's aflame with roasted spice/pepper notes. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, winecompanion.com

    Yalumba Vine Vale Grenache 2023
From bush vines planted in 1929 and 1949 with some whole bunch in the mix.
Talk about personality. This is bunchy, meaty, floral and more, its light-but-bright fruit completely infiltrated by savouriness and smokiness and general herbal complexities. This wine is drastically dry and tannic in, as far as I'm concerned, the best of ways. It works as a wild ride through the streets of modern Australian grenache. I love it. (95) CAMPBELL MATTINSON

  47. Tentenublo Xerico Vinaspre Rioja 2017
    Tentenublo Xerico Vinaspre Rioja 2017

The 2016 Xerico that we are offering today is an ode to the wines that Roberto's ancestors drank - Rioja without oak maturation. In place of the oak is cement and chestnut foudre's. The other connection with the past is that the wine contains 15% of the white grape Viura whilst the balance is Tempranillo.

Xerico is the name of the soil 'Xeric Torriothent'! This is a carlcareous marl soil from the Tertiary era on eroded slopes.

This wine is from three plots - El Pedrón, La Entrada and La Fuente Colas. The age of the vines range from 15 to 50 years old.

Fermentation is completed with natural yeasts in stainless steel and cement vats to retain freshness and minerality. As I mentioned above this wine doesn't see any oak and is aged for five months in cement vats and chestnut foudres.

Don't think of this as Joven style - it is much more serious.
