We were a bit chuffed to get this wine when trying it recently particularly given that you don't see a lot of jacquere wines out of Savoie at the price. The chateau is based in the Chatillon castle, a Roman watch tower built 70AD to signal the regiments along the Rhone River. It's pretty striking stuff in the hills there and the high-altitude vineyards lend a lovely racy edge to the wines.

Light bodied and crisp with a clean, steely minerality and light floral blossom accents on top of waxy citrus and green apple fruit. On the palate it races through cutting with mandarin and lemon peel apple/pear flavours and plenty of energetic acidity that drives a clean, mineral finish spiked with qartz and white pepper. Great stuff!

SPECIAL VALUE

A Portuguese transplant, arinto is looking like it will settle into McLaren Vale with some ease. This, a case in point. Free run, a little of the light pressings, and wild fermented in steel. Pear and dried apple lashed with brine, savoury-spiked with parsley seed and fennel frond, a water-splashed-concrete mineral note accenting. There’s a nice little plump of texture and fruit weight, accosted and stewarded into line by satisfyingly natural acidity and faintly seasoning grip. (93) MARCUS ELLIS, Halliday Wine Companion

Acidity is e lifeblood of all the wines we drink, and in the warmer reaches of Australia, finding varieties that hold on to that natural acidity in hot, dry seasons is vital for success. Arinto, a Portuguese native, is panted sparsely here but a wine could be very persuasive in changing that. Flag waivers for future proof varieties, the crew at Lino Ramble have chosen to work with growers who have a preference for organic and biodynamic farming. Endeavouring to make wines which display characters that at once tie them to their European originals with the saline, textural nuance of where they are grown In the winery we take a minimal intervention approach and texture is king. Turning tiny parcels of excellent fruit into varietal wines reflective of the characters inherent to each grape and a good dose of McLaren Vale’s unique Mediterranean/Australian terroir.

No, this is not just another "Light Dry Red" playing to the recent fads but a serious nod to the 'Burgundies' of the 50's 60's and 70's which Nick Spencer is paying homage to. These were classic light-bodied Shiraz and Shiraz/ Pinot blends that emerged from the Hunter and are highly sort after now. They are back in fashion and tasting this it's not hard to understand why.

The style can be a little hit or miss and getting that combo of pinot and shiraz just right is critical, which Nick has done a brilliant job of here. A touch of sour cherry, cranberry and strawberries that plays off broodier black currant and blackberry fruit swirling around in the background. It's served on a palate that is crunchy and vibrant with lovely fine structure and soft melting tannins. Great poise between the fruit and other elements and while this is wonderfully easy to enjoy there is a plenty going on here that belies the seriousness of the wine.

While its ready to go now and easy to love if you put a couple of bottles away for just a couple of years or so I think you would be a very happy camper!

Black almost to the rim with vibrant purple edging. Almost overwhelmingly intense aroma that is pure Touriga with a touch of oak: black, tangy fruit, perfumed with bergamot (Earl Gray tea) and opening up to violets and a sprinkle of sweet spice. The tannins have that thick, almost chocolatey character of the variety, so different from Cabernet's more upright posture. Juicy and aromatic and nicely dry on the finish. From a small trial block on the property in Karridale . Single cane. Shoot and fruit thinned. One bunch per shoot. Dry grown. 10 months sur lie in hogsheads and barriques. The crew at Gant & Co. making Touriga Nacional in Australia (Barossa, McLaren Vale and now Margaret River) since 2002 so there is a bit of affinity there for it and it shows in this very authentic verison. They believe this is the best expression yet.

Botanical herb, spring blossom and citrus aromas form the subtle nose. Taking up where the nose left off, the linear, medium-bodied palate features peach, lemon zest and bitter almond alongside bright acidity. WINE ENTHUSIAST

Honey, aniseed, dried herbs, almond, pink grapefruit and green pear. It’s juicy, but kind of saline, tight and flecked with a fennel and herb perfume, a bit of chalky texture with some grip and energy on a finish of good length and some lemon rind. I like this. Drink this with abandon, enjoy it with a wide range of fare, it's freshness and structure give it a wide zone to play in.

Very cool wine. Almond oil and citrus pith on the nose slowly open to reveal orange blossom, green mandarin and saline notes. Some lovely phenolic grip add texture webbing the pristine fruits on the palate together nicely. It starts tangy and fresh with an array of citrus interspersed with rocky notes and green apple fruit. Super refreshing with a long palate that sizzles along to a long supple close.

Impecável (meaning 'impeccable') is an extremely pure expression of Touriga Nacional from the Dão region, where it probably originated even if it is more often associated with the Douro, for both ports and table wine. In Dão it is generally blended with Jaen (known as Mencía in Spain) and/or Alfrocheiro and Tinta Roriz. It does remind me a little bit of Fitapreta's A Touriga Vai Nua, which was my wine of the week three years ago, though Impecável is perhaps a little less sweet-fruited thanks to the cooler, more northerly vineyard site and the imprint of the Dão's granite soils. This is deliciously floral, with a herbal freshness even though the grapes were fully destemmed, and it carries its 13% alcohol effortlessly. The tannins are silky, the whole is mouth-watering. 100% made from the queen white grape variety of the region, Encruzado, this emblematic Portuguese grape variety was born in the Dão region. When well crafted in the vineyard and winery, it presents delicate aromas such as notes of yellowfleshed fruit, light citrus notes, a little resin, with a great balance, little extraction, moderate alcohol content, no wood, very fresh, easy to drink and Above all, very gastronomic. The vineyards are between 30 and 50 years old and are mainly located in the sub-region of the mountain of Terras de Senhorim, the most balanced sub-region for whites, naturally producing elegant and fresh wines.

The 420 is a special plot that sits in the highly regarded Chianche sub-zone. The vines are on the round of a hill, so have multiple expositions and sit at 650 metres above the local woodlands that leave it exposed to the warm weather. PWS

Quite a different beast to the 'entry' Greco offering. There's a palpable intensity, structure and savouriness to the wine. Peach, lemon curd and a refreshing saline grapefruit acidity all in the mix along with a little nutty nuance. The texture starts of creamy and round but is quickly usurped by a wall of drying, pithy tannin which draws everything in at the back leaving dry and lightly bitter, pleasing finish. This is a distinctive wine built to be consumed with food to see it at its best. Idiosyncratic and intriguing in the best way. ALEX DOBSON, PWS

Showing Greco di Tufo’s serious, sophisticated side, this has discreet aromas suggesting stone fruit, lychee and Spanish broom. Linear and polished, the elegant palate offers white peach, pear and Myer lemon before finishing on hints of white almond and acacia honey. The DeWitt Vineyard is sustainably farmed, made up of granite and quartz soils. A blend of Portuguese grape varieties, Touriga Nacional, Tinto Roriz, Trincadeira are planted in a single block. The block was picked and co-fermented at the same time. Aged only in neutral oak for 12 months then bottled. The 2021 Kerner bouquet is delicate yet impactful, with exotic floral perfumes, tropical citrus and sour melon. It’s vividly fruit-centric yet full of zesty tension, with sour kiwi, ripe nectarine and depths of saline minerality. Paolo Vodopivec works only with the Vitovska grape, which is native to the area bordering Slovenia and just north of Trieste. He likes to use ancient winemaking techniques, including amphorae and works with bio-dynamically grown grapes.

This is from a 260m vineyards with the crushed and de-stemmed grapes spending 6 months in contact with the wine in Georgian anfora. Its then matured in large Slovenian oak case for approx. 24 months before bottling without any fining or filtration.

Paolo Vodopivec, his winery and six hectares of densely planted Vitovska are located in Carso, a plateau of shear limestone tucked between the border of Slovenia and the Adriatic Sea. Vodopivec was inspired by Josko Gravner. Like him, Vodopivec ages most of his wines in subterranean Georgian Amphora, followed by refinement in large neutral oak and a long stay in bottle before release. The results must be tasted to be believed. These are some of the top white wines being made in the world today, like cool-mountain air and liquid stone encapsulated in a bottle, yet with rich textural complexities that boggle the mind.

Crushed rocks and dried flowers give way to peach skins and chamomile as the 2019 Vitovska blossoms in the glass. This is pure and lifted in style, graceful and finessed, quickly gaining a salty tension as young pit fruits and lemon nuances mingle. A salty flourish and flinty sensation come forward through the finale, adding a savory flair as the 2019 finishes with lasting concentration. It's a battle royal of North vs South for our second premium pack where the only winner is going to be you! From the warm southern coast to the rolling hills of the verdant north, Italy's multitude of breathtaking terroir and incredible indigenous varieties is one to impress.

This is an exciting little pack, something a little different with some cracking little wines brand new to the country, some Prince Wine Store classics and a couple of wines, we know, you will be happily and wonderfully surprised by.

From the north we start with one of the best new wines we have seen in a while. The Battiselle le Battiselle Soave is such a beautiful Soave. This is the second vintage of this to hit our shores and we missed the tiny allocation last time but certainly won't this time. You are in for a treat as we think this is one of best Soave's, if not, best white wine from Italy in some time.

Next up is the La Dama Vini Superiore. A nuanced and pretty style Valpolicella from a modern and thoughtful producer. Also relatively new to the country this see's the skins of the Amarone ferment added to the Valpolicella to add an extra depth and richness that you do not normally see from the Classico versions. 

Last is the king of red wine in Italy and the Mauro Veglio Barolo Gattera. Both the vineyard and the vintage favour this release with so much immediate appeal straight our of the gate. Veglio is turning back the use of oak and we are reaping the benefits for the change in tack. All the generosity is still there of the house style but with even more clarity and verve.

From the south we start with the Petila Greco di Tufo. This is another family estate that has only relatively recently started to bottle under their own label. This come from an elevated plot of old vines and see's some extended ageing and subtle barrel work. The zingy greco grape keeps it liveliness while the extra time in bottle has built and layered the wine.

We would be hard pressed not to include an Etna Rosso in the pack and we are so lucky that our choices here in Aus are so exceptional.  Giuseppe Tornatore spent much of the early 2000s sourcing some of the regions best plots which has proved to be an insightful move with, now some of the most highly sought after vineyards in his holding and what seems like an unstoppable thirst for his wines.

The last wine of the list is a real treat and was such a surprise for us in a recent tasting. This hails from foothills of Mt Vesuvias and in fact the vineyards overlook the famous ruins of Pompei. Unsurprisingly the wine reflects in origins and is an intriguing blend of piedirosso and aglianico that greets you with its smokey and charred fruit overlayed with dried and broody fruits.

Regarded as one of the premier producers in Jurançon, Clos Joliette was founded in 1929, when the Migne family cleared forest in a natural southeast-facing amphitheater to plant a hectare of vines.
The result has been an incredible selection of complex and aromatic off-dry wines, reflecting the reputation Antoine Gerbelle bestowed on the domaine as “the Romanee Conti of the South-West France”.

What makes these wines so sought after is the combination of three unique aspects. First, its location. With only 1.85 hectares Clos Joliette sits at 300m altitude, on the slopes of the hill of Beauvallon (Commune of Jurancon). The vines were planted in 1929 by Madame Migné and exposed to the East and South-East in a natural amphitheater, allowing the grapes to capture the gentle morning sun, rather than afternoon heat.

Second, an atypical terroir made of clay-silica, pudding stones, Ponto-Pliocene pebbles and crossed through by a vein of iron.

Third, the wine itself - a single varietal 100% Petit Manseng, treated with minimal intervention throughout vinification, no fining or filtration, and long aging in oak barrels for 4 to 6 years.
