Domaine de Chatillon Jacquere 2020We were a bit chuffed to get this wine when trying it recently particularly given that you don't see a lot of jacquere wines out of Savoie at the price. The chateau is based in the Chatillon castle, a Roman watch tower built 70AD to signal the regiments along the Rhone River. It's pretty striking stuff in the hills there and the high-altitude vineyards lend a lovely racy edge to the wines.
Light bodied and crisp with a clean, steely minerality and light floral blossom accents on top of waxy citrus and green apple fruit. On the palate it races through cutting with mandarin and lemon peel apple/pear flavours and plenty of energetic acidity that drives a clean, mineral finish spiked with qartz and white pepper. Great stuff!

Fiore Nero Chianti 2022Spiced cherries, dried thyme, rose petals and licorice lead into a swelling belly of berries and twigs. Its lovely and even keeled in its delivery, a spine of tannins ribs around the core of crunchy dark berries. The bright fruit notes are tempered by a savoury edge while a powdery tail of tannins signs off the wine. This is jaw-dropping value for a Chianti. A Portuguese transplant, arinto is looking like it will settle into McLaren Vale with some ease. This, a case in point. Free run, a little of the light pressings, and wild fermented in steel. Pear and dried apple lashed with brine, savoury-spiked with parsley seed and fennel frond, a water-splashed-concrete mineral note accenting. They've succeeded in producing a range that is emblematic of the best of what the region has to offer and packaged it up with some of the besta value coming out of the region.
Unbelievable value again this year. A bit of white pepper and sour cherry fruit that opens into a slight darker fruit profile in the glass. Same goes on the palate with a little more dark plumb and morello cherry here than in other years. Plushly fruited but all held together with nice savoury tannins and a splash of leathery spice.

Cherry, almond, aniseed, a smattering of dried herbs, maybe lavender. It’s medium-bodied, kind of juicy, kind of savoury, there’s some strawberry in with cherry, some grainy grip to tannin, slightly ferrous, gently bitter with amaro, and the finish is fresh and pretty long. It’s maybe a little more crunchy and herbal than some vintages, and yet, it still lays on the charm. Nice. I do like a wine that doesn’t try too hard to be anything other than a great drink. Alexakis Wines Vidano 2023The grapes are cold-soaked for up to 10 hours to release all their aromas. The free-run juice is fermented in stainless steel tanks with selected cultured yeast at low temperatures. Following fermentation, the wine is kept on the fine lees for three months. Very little filtration and fining are employed.
On the nose, elegant peachy and floral aromas with a refreshing grassy note. On the palate, the well-judged alcohol adds to the overall richness of the peach and apricot flavours. Medium-full bodied with a satiny texture and a long fruity finish.
