Little Frances Warner Vineyard Shiraz 2022Great delight here. Medium weight but with darker fruit spectrum scents and flavours, plum, choc-liquorice, cassis and lavender with faint mintiness and dill/fennel notes in the mix. The palate is supple, smooth, rolls beautifully and long. There's a sense of concentration but refinement, lots of graphite minerally notes and light, wet pebble notes. It's a delight to drink. A plump, glossy and nicely reductive, mid-weighted expression of shiraz that is crafted to be drunk with imminence and joy. Violet, purple pastille, iodine and a hint of stemmy bitterness. Domaine La Soumade Rasteau 2020Andre Romero founded Domaine Soumade in 1979 and is now considered perhaps the finest producer in the region. The village of Rasteau was elevated to AOC status alongside Chateauneuf du Pape and Gigondas and 2010, and we find that while the styles are similar there is more freshness in Rasteau than the other two. The Cuvee Prestige is a gorgeous wine, made from a classic blend of Grenache (70%), Syrah (20%) and Mourvedre (10%) made with an extensive fermentation and maceration of nearly four weeks to extract colour, favour and tannins, following very gentle maturation in a combination of old 4,000L oak vats (foudres) and concrete tanks. This is a wine with beautiful perfume of violets and lavender, and stacked with the flavour of summer berries. Pete Schell's Bête Noir is a shiraz blended across a selection of Barossan grounds including a portion from the cooler Eden Valley. I was out and about in Leichhardt today, which is surely one of the more difficult suburbs to spell, and decided to pretend I was a normal person and pop into a bottle shop. In this case, Vintage Cellars, and it’s invariably interesting to see what’s on the shelves. Anyway, my partner told me she’d tried this wine earlier in the week, and that it was good. So we bought a bottle.Some struck match, grapefruit, lemon oil, light spicy oak and cashew, honey florals, and fennel. Juicy but tight, with good intensity and flavour, though it’s still pretty light on its feet, a little nectarine and honeydew melon in with citrus, creamy cashew, light struck match, with a bright grapefruit tang on a finish of excellent length. Domaine la Roubine La Grange de Briguieres Sablet 2022The personality of the maker - generous and jovial - is on full display via black and red fruits while blue florals and the liquorice that jumps out of the glass, give the wine it's aromatic swagger. On the palate too, it's direct; big on flavour and impact with that same red and black fruited attack laying the groundwork for a more complex array of mineral, hung meat, liquorice, dried herbs and smoke. Pretty much like falling head first into a hypothetical vat the Southern Rhone itself. Medium to full bodied with plenty of structure to cope with anything from the bbq to the one-pot wonder.

Gueguen Chablis 2020 375mlCeline Gueguen Brocard and Frederic Gueguen are a refreshing new voice amongst the mineral soils of Chablis. Though their experience runs deep. Celine is the daughter of Jean-Marc Brocard, the respected Chablis estate where she worked with her husband Frederic for over a decade.
Winegrowing runs in Celine's blood. Plots from her great grandmother established in 1882 have been passed down the line to her. Her mother, also a wine grower instilled a strong work ethic in her daughter. To say wine ran in the family is an understatement.
That classic stoney-Chablis-esq vibe here. Why do we mentione that because a warming climates and changing syle doesn't always present but here it does. Nice balance with the fresh white tree fruits cut by a saline line of acicidity and sprinkled with a little white pepper, quartzy thing going on. Nice little push of fruit out the back with loveley virbancy and purity offset with a little leesy funk.

Leeuwin Estate Prelude Chardonnay 2023"It's the best Prelude I can remember tasting, I'll say that much straight off. A little struck match, very spicy (some pepper and cinnamon), bright citrus and green pear, hazelnut, fine flinty grip, with a cool finish of excellent length. There would be a lot of wineries who would love to have this as their top chardonnay. But of course, Leeuwin has that little matter of Art Series above it. This really is one of the best and most complete of this line. Seems to have struck a nice balance between the early more opulent styles and some of the later leaner styles. The vintage has helped but the fruit is so pretty with typical cashew, light grapefruit and a little lemon character supported by such exquisitely applied oak. Very good.

Hobo Wine Camp Folk Machine Parts and Labour Red 2022This is the second vintage that Grenache has dominated the P&L blend. The 2022 is a blend of Grenache from Mangels Ranch in Suisun Valley, Cedar Lane in Arroyo Seco, and Waddington Ranch in Mendocino, Carignane from Lolonis, Maria Martinson, and Castañon all in Mendocino, and Syrah from Vecino in Potter Valley. There is a good amount of whole cluster and carbonic maceration through the lots keeping everything fresh and fun. As always, the blend was made immediately after harvest and the wine was aged in a combination of French oak foudres and stainless steel tanks.
Oh yum! This is such a joy to drink. A cracking drop here from the legend that is Kenny likitprakong of Hobo. He was telling us that this was his house wine. The one that he has cases of to rip the corks off when mates come round, the BBQ fires up and a long warm weekend is about a kick off and we can see why. This is hard to put down once it's in your glass.
It's all about the red fruits here with fresh picked red cherry and raspberry all vying for position at the front of the pack. Some pretty violet notes swirl around and as this opens up some savoury whole black peppercorn and foresty bits make themselves heard. Its lithe and fresh bursting onto the palate with that core of red berry fruit. Clean and pure just sizzling with energy. A joy to drink and would happily take a brief chill if you were so inclined.

Riorret Lusatia Park Vineyard Chardonnay 2017Lusatia Park is in the Upper Yarra, and the cooler climate - coupled with the modest alcohol - led to the decision to take the wine through mlf. It certainly hasn't stripped the elegance or fresh, juicy/limey acidity of this lovely chardonnay. The Yarra Valley length of flavour is on full display, oak (obviously) simply a means to an end.
