This is a MGS blend and the little extra of dollop mataro brings a nice earthy hit the otherwise bight and bubby fruit. This just leaps out of the glass with gleaming red fruits and plenty of sweet spice goodness. Monte Ronca Colle Marianna Soave 2023The wines of Monte Ronca and Colle Marianna are the creation of local specialist Antonio Fattori, based in the commune of Ronca, in the heart of Garganega country. His family began as Soave producers, and a little over 100 years ago they bought a 12-hectare property on the eastern edge of the Valpolicella denomination, where the vineyards cover the ridge dividing the Alpine Valley and Illasi Valley at elevations of close to 500 metres.
Made from 100% Garganega planted in the basalt vineyards of Monte Calvarino. The fruit was picked at the end of September, crushed and fermented in 85% stainless steel and 15% large format casks. At 450 metres, Garganega can only just reach ripeness, so this is where a small amount of appassimento fruit works well (around 10%) to add flavour and texture while holding its cooler structure. The wine is charmingly floral on the nose, with notes of peach and green almond. Casa da Passarella A Descoberta Dao Tinto 2020Made in stone lagars and aged in cement tanks along with some large old wooden vats, it's a very typical Dão blend of Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz (elsewhere, Tempranillo), Alfrocheiro and Jaen (aka Mencia).
A Descoberta means 'to be discovered' and the somewhat mystical label, a box tagged 1942 is a folkloric reference to an early version of a time capsule a box hidden in the stone walls of the house of Passarella containing a will to be opened 50 years hence and directing the riches of the box be re-distributed to the poor. A lovely wine supple, fleshy and spicy, with extra delicate tannin and oak. From lead-off, the cherry-chocolate fruit really shows the Dao granite, and is laden with wiry dark herbs. In the mouth, it's fleshy-meaty and mineral fresh - round with good movement and fruit-earth interplay. It has excellent presence in the mouth but is not reliant on weight for the show. Wonderfully composed, it sits and radiates, effortless in affect. Gorgeous delicate tannin is the frame, rimming the mouth and allowing the fruit and spicy acid to radiate delicately. A wonderful advertisement for varietal blends.

Pieropan Soave Classico 2023Leonildo ‘Nino’ Pieropan, who sadly passed away in 2018, was the first to show the world just how great Garganega, and Italian white wine, can be. He recognised the importance of terroir early on, acquiring various hillside vineyards (including Pigno, Becco, Boiolo, Tondo, Palestrello and La Santa) and expanding the prestigious Calvarino and La Rocca vineyards, first made as single vineyard crus in 1971 and 1978 respectively.
Today, sons Dario (winemaker) and Andrea (viticulturist) continue the family tradition. The brothers have converted all of their vineyards to organic and are overseeing the new winery being built amongst the vineyards just outside the village.
Mostly Garganega with about 10-15% Trebbiano di Soave, this is wonderfully aromatic - not a common feature of Soave - with floral notes (cherry blossom), citrus, stone fruit and almond. The palate is delicate and focussed, with excellent depth and lovely overall balance.

Run by three sisters and located within Soave Classico, Suavia produces a portfolio of terroir-driven wines that impress for their depth and undeniable elegance. Year after year, I find the Monte Carbonare to be one of the best interpretations of this vineyard. This is also one of the few estates producing a varietal Trebbiano di Soave in the region. The Massifitti is the first wine here that caught my attention.

Le Battistelle 'Battistelle' Soave Classico 2022Le Battistelle is simply one of the Soave Classico’s best producers. They have some of the most incredible hand tended terrace vineyards with vines up to 130 years old. There are records of the Battistelle vineyard going back to 1644. Fantastic volcanic subsoils plus the estate is classified “Viticoltura Eroica” or Heroic Viticulture which appears on the label of the Battistelle cuvee. It stands for the hard work that production of these wines requires.
Owned by Gelmino and Cristina Dal Bosco who after working for larger co-operatives in the region passionately wanted their estate, and started in 2002 under the Le Batistelle label. They own just over 9 hectares (100% Garganega) divided across four small plots all situated in the hills of Brognoligo.
The 2022 Soave Classico Eroica lifts from the glass with a savory blend of dried peaches and apricots, complemented by hints of fresh mint and crushed stone. It’s soothingly round in character, resonating with ripe orchard fruits and citrus-tinged inner florals over a core of tantalizing acidity. Barri Alto Aranza Palomino Vino de Pagos 2022‘Aranzá’ is Rafa’s sub-vineyard name for a small portion he selects from Viña La Palma. La Palma itself is a small vineyard, 3 hectares of 60 year-old Palomino growing in Albariza tosca cerrada. The term ‘Aranzá’ is a short-hand for the local measure of land area, an Aranzáda – depending upon the colloquy involved (the measure is different in each town and possibly grower-to-grower!), it’s roughly a half hectare.
Pickled hay, buttery chalk and the cold steel smell of yesterday’s Tea Billy. Savoury, earthen, edged and filled with pickles and spice. Dandelion, a nice rim of diatom (blue oceanic fossil minerality), pickled cucumber, a sapid buzz in the cheeks and corners of the tongue. A round and savoury style, the cereal-inflected Palomino is mid-weight with an understated, lovely finish of bitters on the point of the tongue. Incredible volume and textural satisfaction at such low ABV.

Williams Paola Medina Finolis Fino de Anada 2016 500mlOne of the large, historical houses of conventional sherry-making, Williams and Humbert nowadays offer a layer of distinct wines within the fluidity of its 'Sherry' styles. Under the young generation leadership of Paola Medina Sheldon, the Williams Coleccion is a series of astonishingly delicate and singular vintage sherries, or añadas: statically aged single-vintage wines, with terroir as important as bodega influences. Paola mainly takes fruit from the 'las Conchas' vineyard within Pago Añina (jerez), and some from old vines in Pago Carrascal (jerez).
In every respect, Finolis parallels Willy Perez's remarkable statically-aged natural alcohol Fino Caberrubia (from the same Pago), except that it's a half degree of booze short of the regulations. Only 50% free run juice yield from pressing was used, fermenting naturally to 15%. The wine was then aged in old 600L Fino casks with 20% ullage to allow plenty of Flor. Later, at nearly 5 years of age, the wine was bottled en rama (unfiltered), however the DO refused to ratify it as a Fino as the alcoholic degree had diminished, and it's in the market as table wine of Cadiz, not Fino.
