One forgets the longevity of something that seems to have great energy behind it, but this is the eleventh year that Salo has worked with this fruit from the Full Moon Vineyard of the Southern Hills of the Yarra. Wild ferment, old oak, unfined, unfiltered, minimal sulphur. A cool and wet start to the season, low and slow growing reflected in the wine somewhat.A quiet and gentle chardonnay of suppleness, creamy flow, soft citrus fruit characters, red apple sweet-sourness and a lick of almond, nougat and vanilla in the mix. An undertow of barely there but refreshing saline acidity does a nice trick too. This feels very even, subtle in its general sense and yet persists beautifully and with freshness with each sip. Kenzie Waiohinganga Chardonnay 2022Grown on deep alluvial river sands and stone left behind by the Esk River, vines experience a maritime influence where warm, dry days are followed by a cool sea breeze.
Handpicked fruit was wholebunch pressed direct to 500L puncheons with full solids. 10% of which was new French oak. After a few days, wild fermentation spontaneously started and progressed for 20 days with a maximum temperature of 24 deg C.
Post fermentation the wine was stirred a few times and left to mature at cool and allowed to go through full Malolactic Fermentation. Stirring every 3- 4 weeks. Minimal sulphur was added after 5 months. After a total of 9 months of barrel maturation the wine was racked to tank for bottling. No fining or filtration.

Well this is the Gin Gin clone from Karridale, gets the whole malo thing, and 40% new oak. Heavy bottles still, unlike Leeuwin and Cullen, who are leading the way in this respect.Powerful wine, and glossy, and buttery, cashew nut richness, toast. ginger and clove, with some struck match, pear and grapefruit. It’s a slippery viscous and powerful affair, toffee and grapefruit, mango richness, maybe a little bit brassy and bold, but saline and savoury to close, with a finish of fine length and chalky texture. Syrahmi Garden of Earthly Delights Chardonnay 2021It walks to the beat of its own drum and it does so successfully. Lemon curd, wheat, honeydew melon and assorted floral notes work in with earth, bran and cedar. If you called it kaleidoscopic you wouldn't be exaggerating. It's not thick with flavour (it's relatively lean), but everything here both spreads and gathers. Jinkies! This is a different beast. They have replaced the estate with this, which is essentially a "Village" or maybe a "Premier Cru" from them. All classified sites now. I was really looking forward to sitting down and actually having a good look at this new wine from one of my fave Rizza producers. It did not disappoint. It carries all that rocky, pithy, just underripe stone fruit characters I love from the estate. The core is a little more lively than usual, they are always energetic and usually spine tingling in their attack, this is a bit more approachable and piquant. Long, and as is the case with so many of these 21s, the finish is all mineral and saline, so much so it pushes the fruit to the side. A final lick of not insubstantial extract really kicks the finish in to overdrive. Excellent. ROSCOE

Donnhoff Niederhauser Klamm Kabinett Riesling 2022The 2022 Riesling Niederhäuser Klamm Kabinett is on volcanic soils of porphyry. This is a vineyard that used to belong to an extended family. It was repurchased and is now vinified as a single site. The nose is of serene citrus. The palate is rich like lemon oil, concentrated, flowing and mouth-watering. Lemon fills the mouth, serene, yet with an inherent playfulness. All the fruit plays first fiddle for now, but the stone underneath just waits its turn. The 2022 is glorious, balanced and bright. Olivier Morin Bourgogne Blanc Chitry 'Constance' 2022Olivier Morin took over the family business in 1992, after a first life spent in the music world. The 14ha domaine is currently undergoing organic certification. When he took over, his parents were making just their three appellations: Aligoté, plus Chitryof both colours. The continuity of this approach is reflected in Olivier's 'Constance' cuvées, to which he has added an old-vine Bourgogne Chitry white called Olympe, after the original owner of the vines, and a single vineyard red, Vau de Puits.
