Botanical herb, spring blossom and citrus aromas form the subtle nose. Taking up where the nose left off, the linear, medium-bodied palate features peach, lemon zest and bitter almond alongside bright acidity. WINE ENTHUSIAST

It’s juicy, but kind of saline, tight and flecked with a fennel and herb perfume, a bit of chalky texture with some grip and energy on a finish of good length and some lemon rind. I like this. Quite possibly the most delicious Pobblebonk to date. Riesling, friulano, pinot grigio and ribolla gialla are the friends, each fermented wild in used French oak, on full solids and later blended. It’s heady with meadow flowers, lemon blossom and hints of lemon verbena, really spicy with nutty, leesy aromas, and the palate is both textural and alive with fine acidity. Light to mid straw colour in the glass, the bouquet savoury with some nutty notes possibly from barrel ferment, adding layers to the floral and spicy fruit aromas. Deliciously intense fruit on palate with a touch more dimension than the Quealy pinot grigios. It's truly more than the sum of its parts. How do you make a melange of fruity, bitter and salty so perfectly? So easygoing, delivering the goods, not stingy on flavour, not pushy with perfume. Just right. Petilia's story is woven into the very fabric of Greco di Tufo and this wine encapsulate brilliantly what these wines can be when this variety and place come together under the watchful eye of a producer of this calibre. Drink this with abandon, enjoy it with a wide range of fare, it's freshness and structure give it a wide zone to play in.

Very cool wine. Almond oil and citrus pith on the nose slowly open to reveal orange blossom, green mandarin and saline notes. Some lovely phenolic grip add texture webbing the pristine fruits on the palate together nicely. It starts tangy and fresh with an array of citrus interspersed with rocky notes and green apple fruit. Super refreshing with a long palate that sizzles along to a long supple close.

The Ronchi di Cialla 2023 Friuli Colli Orientali Ribolla Gialla is a more stripped-down and transparent expression of the grape that is mercifully not overworked or overthought. The wine is bright and mineral-driven with white melon and nectarine. It remains sharply focused over a lean-bodied finish. Seijo Karakuchi is Dewazakura’s every day sake. Seijo means ‘with whole heart’ and Karakuchi means ‘dry’. It can be enjoyed chilled or warm depending on your food choice or the season. It has a delicate herb fragrance and light bodied sake with a hint of mushroom. The finish is clean and crisp.

Handago’ means Handa area/village/city where Kunizakari has been located since 1844.

This Sake is made with 100% local rice from their contracted rice farmers. Delicate citrus tones on the nose, clean and light texture and Umami from the rice, fully flavoured with fresh grape fruitiness.

‘Karakuchi’ means dry and crisp, and this Sake has a beautifully dry, crisp and clean finish.

Very bright with candied-fruit and cola character. Medium body. Short. Still, it’s bright and cheerful. Drink now. JAMES SUCKLING

The 420 is a special plot that sits in the highly regarded Chianche sub-zone. The vines are on the round of a hill, so have multiple expositions and sit at 650 metres above the local woodlands that leave it exposed to the warm weather. PWS

This sake is classic Tengumai, made using Yamahai method. 'Jikomi' means 'procedure' or 'method'. This Junmai sake has been matured in tank more than 12 months. It has slight golden color, and full of flavour, complexity and good acidity.Yamahai is a very old and traditonal technique, and Tengumai have mastered this technique and it is reflected in this sake. Lots of spices, tumeric and even aged chese aromas. Rich and complex on the palate, with savoury, creamy, citrus characters, it has an incredibly long finish.

Quite a different beast to the 'entry' Greco offering. There's a palpable intensity, structure and savouriness to the wine. Peach, lemon curd and a refreshing saline grapefruit acidity all in the mix along with a little nutty nuance. The texture starts of creamy and round but is quickly usurped by a wall of drying, pithy tannin which draws everything in at the back leaving dry and lightly bitter, pleasing finish. This is a distinctive wine built to be consumed with food to see it at its best. Idiosyncratic and intriguing in the best way. ALEX DOBSON, PWS

Showing Greco di Tufo’s serious, sophisticated side, this has discreet aromas suggesting stone fruit, lychee and Spanish broom. Linear and polished, the elegant palate offers white peach, pear and Myer lemon before finishing on hints of white almond and acacia honey. Oka Kura is Junmai sake based, aromatized with four unique Japanese botanicals, and fortified with shochu. It is produced in Kumamoto, Japan, at the Tsutsumi Distillery. Oka Kura has a medium-light body with a round mouthfeel provided by the sake. You can very clearly taste the rice, yeast, yuzu, wormwood, and sansho. The combination of yuzu and yomogi creates a strong grapefruit backbone that dominates the palate beginning to end. 

Oka Kura Bermutto is a uniquely Japanese take on the category of vermouth made from aromatised, shochu-fortified sake. Technically it's not a vermouth because it is not wine-based, but it works in cocktails as a vermouth should—as a botanically-infusing, low ABV modifier— that bridges a gap between sake, shochu, and vermouth.

The name Fukuju is derived from one of the Seven Lucky Gods in Japanese mythology. Fukuju is a relatively small brewery, making artisan and craft sake. Current owner Yasafuku San is 13th generation.

The house style is very elegant. The water in Nada/Kobe is called Miyamizu, and it is hard water by Japanese standards, full of minerals and is famous water in the ‘sake world’. Nada regional style is dry and has good grip with spiciness.

Water’s influence is very significant in Sake style, and Fukuju use this Miyamizu as well as blending pure water (filtered soft water) to make particular style of Sake. They take ‘water’ seriously in making and developing new way of Sake making.

Fukuju is traditional with a modern approach at the same time. Since the large earthquake in this area in 1995, they built their brewery which is Seismic structure, and are progressing to create ecofriendly and sustainable way of Sake making.

The water in Nada/Kobe is called Miyamizu and is famous because it's full of minerals. Fukuju Junmai Sake is dry and has good grip with spiciness.

Produced by the highly regarded Kitajima Sake Brewery. This Yuzushu uses all natural ingrediens and is made with Sake, sea salt and four times the the yuzu of of most regular yuzushu. It's rich and luxurious, concenetrated but wonderfully fresh and so distinctive. A PWS favourite!

Named after the mythical octopus which is said to guard Shiga bay. This robust sake has a rich mix of fruit and savoury elements, up front is green melon, white peach and edamame leading to nougat and cream followed by savoury undertones of shitake mushroom, rice bran, and almonds with a hint of salt & pepper to close. An elegant, sessionable sake for both dining and imbibing.

Umeshu is produced by infusing Ume fruit into Shochu. Green Tea flavour is added to achieve  refreshing character. The texture is smooth and is has well balanced sweetness and delicate  green tea tannin. Finishing is crisp and clean. It is refreshing to have chilled Umeshu straight or  over ice, or cold spring water. Or you can create any kind of beautiful Umeshu cocktail

Black tea and Umeshu blended. Ume and tropical notes on the nose with almond character. Medium body Umeshu with a creamy texture, the palate shows clean sweetness and good quality black tea, tannin and clean acidity. The finish is clean. Chilled Umeshu straight, over ice,or cold spring water. Great for Umeshu cocktail.

Kenbishi is very classic – keeping same Sake making methods which involve Yamahai method and wild yeast. King of Sake rice ‘Yamadanishiki’ 100% used. ‘Mizuho’ means ‘ear of rice’, but in this case, Kenbishi meant it is ‘Junmai’. Blends of 2 YO to 8 YO tank aged Sake. Distinctive golden colour. Medium to full body. It shows honey, malt and nuts on nose. High in Umami and acidity. Texture is smooth and mouth coating warmth. Rich and complex on the palate with a crisp long finish.

Damijan Podversic represents the essence of the artisan spirit of Friuli, where quality-driven, manual labor in the vineyards and a minimalist approach in the cellar aren't choices, but rather a way of life. The whites see a period of contact on the skins and are aged in large, neutral casks such as those one might see in traditionally oriented cellars in Piedmont or Montalcino. It's a battle royal of North vs South for our second premium pack where the only winner is going to be you! From the warm southern coast to the rolling hills of the verdant north, Italy's multitude of breathtaking terroir and incredible indigenous varieties is one to impress.

This is an exciting little pack, something a little different with some cracking little wines brand new to the country, some Prince Wine Store classics and a couple of wines, we know, you will be happily and wonderfully surprised by.

From the north we start with one of the best new wines we have seen in a while. The Battiselle le Battiselle Soave is such a beautiful Soave. This is the second vintage of this to hit our shores and we missed the tiny allocation last time but certainly won't this time. You are in for a treat as we think this is one of best Soave's, if not, best white wine from Italy in some time.

Next up is the La Dama Vini Superiore. A nuanced and pretty style Valpolicella from a modern and thoughtful producer. Also relatively new to the country this see's the skins of the Amarone ferment added to the Valpolicella to add an extra depth and richness that you do not normally see from the Classico versions. 

Last is the king of red wine in Italy and the Mauro Veglio Barolo Gattera. Both the vineyard and the vintage favour this release with so much immediate appeal straight our of the gate. Veglio is turning back the use of oak and we are reaping the benefits for the change in tack. All the generosity is still there of the house style but with even more clarity and verve.

From the south we start with the Petila Greco di Tufo. This is another family estate that has only relatively recently started to bottle under their own label. This come from an elevated plot of old vines and see's some extended ageing and subtle barrel work. The zingy greco grape keeps it liveliness while the extra time in bottle has built and layered the wine.

We would be hard pressed not to include an Etna Rosso in the pack and we are so lucky that our choices here in Aus are so exceptional.  Giuseppe Tornatore spent much of the early 2000s sourcing some of the regions best plots which has proved to be an insightful move with, now some of the most highly sought after vineyards in his holding and what seems like an unstoppable thirst for his wines.

The last wine of the list is a real treat and was such a surprise for us in a recent tasting. This hails from foothills of Mt Vesuvias and in fact the vineyards overlook the famous ruins of Pompei. Unsurprisingly the wine reflects in origins and is an intriguing blend of piedirosso and aglianico that greets you with its smokey and charred fruit overlayed with dried and broody fruits.

Tasting his 2015 Ribolla I think I understood a lot about his human journey as well. Because if there is one wine that he will consider perfect, this is it. To call it orange wine is to do it an injustice. Of course, it is a macerated white, for seven months in buried amphora. Sure, it matures seven years in large oak barrels. But it is above all a total wine, where everything is in its right place. The oxidative component that does not define it completely, but is only one component, as in great red wines. Infusion scents, as if it were an alcoholic tea. The flavor where saline elements and alcoholic warmth continuously dialogue. A total wine, in short, and as far as I am concerned something extraordinary. (99) DANIELE CERNILLI, doctorwine.com

The 2015 Ribolla Gialla Anfora is sweetly alluring, with a complex and heady blend of orange blossoms, raw honey, mint leaf, earl grey, dried apricots and peaches. It smooths over the palate with oily textures, lifted by a core of nervous acidity. Tart orchard fruits swirl throughout and are complicated by a mouthwatering twist of tangerine. The 2015 lingers impossibly long, spicy and wickedly fresh, mixing candied ginger with lemon sorbet, hints of butterscotch and exotic inner florals. The 2015 is a rich wine of contrasts and tension. Gorgeous aromas of persimmons and spices as nutmeg, cinnamon, orange peel, and hints of caramel. Honey and apricot. Full-bodied, dry and layered with dried fruits such as apricots and pears. Gravner’s legendary wine – the most sought-after skin-contact wine of Italy – is released seven years after the vintage. It's the result of the scrupulous, unconventional work of Josko, from the vineyard to the cellar, that makes the 2015 vintage a deep, golden wine with amber hue. Its intriguing nose is rich in aromatic components like dried apricot, orange peel and resin notes. Mouthfilling with great texture and delicate tannins, it shows lovely acidity with a sapid, mineral finish. DECANTER

Deep orange with amber-coloured reflections. Seductive, initially slightly reductive, oxidative, sweet bouquet of dried orange, peach and sweet spices. On the palate, it has an impressively silky texture with lush fruit, honey notes, hints of baked apple and vanilla. It is firm, stable and could be mistaken for a red wine when tasted blind. Be sure to temper it to 14-16°C, decant and keep a little for the next day! LUCA GIARDINI, superiore.com

Pale orange (less than half the usual sulphites added). Smells of the sort of orange-cream centre in a box of chocolates. Not aggressively chewy. Tangy, salty and dry with a hint of caramel. Went well with sea-bass carpaccio with blood orange and hazelnuts. JANCIS ROBINSON MW
