Telmo Rodriguez 'Basa' Verdejo 2022Basa is based on organically-grown 40 year-old bush-vines grown at 750 metres altitude, and cropped at about 1kg/vine. Basa is all about perfectly balanced sugar/acid/tannin in the berry which is then carefully nurtured into balanced wine, with no additions in the winery (save for a small amount of necessary sulphur at bottling). Basa is a not-so-fruity Rueda Verdejo with 20% Viura in the mix finessing extra palate nerve. Basa is fermented in a mix of large wooden vats, concrete and stainless steel tanks.
Now without any Sauvignon, this gorgeous dry-grown Verdejo is blended with a little of floral Viura to lighten and lift. Basa is lovely, uncomplicated, and texturally pleasing. Basa smells of feijoa and fresh-cut pear with the faintest tropical wash and a gentle green herb tuck. The palate is mid-weight and of good length with a great mix of fruit flesh, earth and gently nutty tannin running out on natural acid. Textured without overt fructose, it’s savoury, with minerality and good length, and perfectly blends richness and line.

It's nutty and has notes of peach skin, aromatic, and it's velvety and warm, with notes of oak, spicy and smoky, with balance and elegance. This is a recent bottling, but there are no clues about it on the labels; but they mention En Rama, bottled unfiltered. Dark Matter Spiced Rum (700ml)This is far from your average Rum. Firstly, it is Scotland's first and only Rum, made in a purpose built distillery in Banchory, between the Cairngorms and Aberdeen. Two brothers, Jim and John Ewan are behind the project and brought in Cory Mason - ex-Rum distiller at New York State's Berkshire Mountain Distillers (to name one of his many exploits) - to help them set things up. The result is a remarkable spiced rum made with only the finest, fresh ingredients and an attention to detail that the big boys can only dream about.
Dark Matter's infusion takes in a swathe of hand sliced fresh ginger, fresh green peppercorns (plucked by hand from their stalks), hand crushed, allspice berries, and Indian long pepper (a close relative of black pepper with a similar but spicier personality). Finally, to impart the ideal balance of sweet and spice, 60 g/l molasses is added. It is from this latter addition, and the spice infusion, Dark Matter takes its colour - no caramel colour is added. The quality and freshness of the ingredients creates a huge whack of intense ginger and spice and the class of the molasses creates a texture and a class that is unique in this style of rum, in our experience.
