MMAD Shiraz 2022If you’re lucky, and most of us aren’t, there comes a time in your life when it all comes together. I suspect that’s what’s happened with this Blewitt Springs vineyard, planted in the middle of the Second World War, and the collection of wine people behind MMAD, all of whom have weathered a lot of summers in a lot of places in the pursuit of wine excellence. This wine tastes of a lot of right decisions, and of a lot of time spent in the journey to them. It has texture, balance, flavour and all that, but as my mum would say, ‘any dumb bunny can do that’. More importantly, what this wine has is all the nods and winks. I once wrote, a long time ago, of a moment where union legend David Campese ran straight through a bunch of defenders without breaking stride, or altering course. He did something, something that couldn’t be seen, and made the impossible look effortless. So too here. It has degrees of silk, fruit enough, a spinnaker on the finish, a volume of nuance. Domaine Barmes Buecher Sylvaner Vielle Vignes Rosenberg 2021The 2021 Sylvaner Rosenberg is made from old vines, planted in 1969/1970, so just over 50 years old. The nose has a faint hint of melted butter and hazelnut. The small harvest meant that it needed to go into used barrique, because there was not enough to fill a foudre. The result is very creamy and smooth, on a slender body, with much lemon freshness. While svelte, this is generous and gorgeously smooth. Pooley Butcher's Hill Riesling 2022Riesling from the Butchers Hill vineyard at Richmond in the Coal River Valley. Whole-bunch pressed and fermented in tank with a further five months on fine lees in old French oak. Pristine fruit and unwavering precision = a beautiful wine. Green apple and lime fruits, wildflowers, crushed stone and grapefruit pith with liminal glimpses of lemon curd. It sports a wicked tubular palate shape of pure citrus fruits and rides on mineral-laden rails of acidity, all focus, velocity and detail. Tremendous length of flavour and sustain here. Massolino Langhe Riesling 2022Screwcap. Massolino planted three clones of Riesling in 2014 in a cool and windswept parcel in Monforte d’Alba. This rocky and limestone-rich plot sits at the hill’s apex at 450-500 metres, just outside the Barolo appellation boundary. After a few years of experimenting with amphora, steel and various types and sizes of oak, the wine today ferments exclusively in a 5,000-litre cement tank, where it rests on lees for nine months.
The use of concrete is hardly commonplace when vinifying Riesling, yet Massolino feels the wine’s brightness and energy merits this approach. It’s hard to disagree, given the coiled energy and purity. It’s a lovely vintage for this wine, with bell-clear apple blossom and white flower flavours allied to the intensity of palate-coating fruitiness and a crunchy lemon and lemongrass close.

Robert Weil Kiedricher Riesling Trocken 2022The 2022 Riesling Kiedricher is from two upper parcels in the of the Wasseros, above the Gräfenberg, which means rivulet, evident in small springs, fed by the forested top of the slope, also on mica schist. This is higher and cooler. One-third is made in wood and two-thirds in stainless steel, from ripe and super-clean fruit. The nose is aromatic, suggesting Reine Claude plum, white peach and green pear skin. Clarity also defines the palate where riper stone fruit shines, framed by grapefruit skin. This has serenity, tautness and substance, despite slenderness. Mouth-watering zestiness appears on the finish. This is a real achievement at an annual volume of more than 100,000 bottles. Exceptional concentration of fruit flavour here. This is straight and direct but wow it has a charge to it. Dockyard Gin 500mlWe were first introduced to the distillery by Melbourne (and San Sebastian) bar owner, Gerald Diffey. He was fairly passionate about this range of gins he'd seen on a trip back to the UK and urged us to import some. We knew Gerald knew his stuff so we were interested but wary given the number of Gins in the market, but once we delved deeper into the operation and then tasted the range we were sold.
The distillery is a relatively new operation headed by Bob Russell and sons, Matthew and Stephen. It is unique in several senses but first off it is housed in a Victorian-era pumphouse in the now derelict Chatham Dockyard south of London. The dockyard was at one time of huge importance to the Empire building ships for the Royal Navy from Napoleonic times through to the Falklands. The pumphouse # 5 was used to pump out water for the dry docks. Russell saw an opportunity to revitalise a magnificent piece of English architecture, give some locals a job and indulge his passion for making bespoke spirits. Martin Miller Gin 700mlOn the market since 1999 this spirit is hailed as a pioneer in the current wave of high-end gins. It was the first to use cucumber as a botanical, and the distiller's obsessive attention to detail is given as the reason for shipping the spirit to Iceland for bottling with local spring water before importing the finished gin in to the UK. Many people who say they don't really like gin do like this one, the major difference with a more traditional London dry being beefed-up angelica and orris root notes with hints of violets, and a spicy finish carried home by nutmeg and cassia bark. Anyone who thinks that dry riesling is always lean and austere should dive into this deep pool of ripe peach and apricot to discover the grape's sensual side. Gaisberg is often spectral, as if its flavors were placed in your hands by a ghost dressed as a bride. Part of that is present here, but there's also a quantum concentration of mineral, catapulted upward by a slingshot of acidity. The wine is so amazing it borders on the implausible.
The grip and the mere impact on the physical palate are impossible to resist. Yet there a higher octave of flavor that wisps up into the air like the vapors from frozen nitrogen. It's a concatenation of lemons and freesia; it alludes to basmati; it alludes, hauntingly, to white peaches and to blueberries, part of an incipience of sweetness that turns it from prose into music.
It's introverted but passionate, classical but not stodgy, and it is in every way wonderful. It almost isn't "Riesling" any more. It's just Gaisberg; I know it from Gobelsburg and Hirsch, and this site is quite particular, spectral and subtle; it whispers its strange tongue and you feel an opiate tingle - What is this wine doing to me? It smells a little like Champagne, this cool high chiming, this cryptic bliss. It is a very rare wine, that delivers as many poignant questions as this one does. Schloss Gobelsburg Gaisberg Riesling 2021The 2021 Riesling Ried Gaisberg is on gneiss, schist and amphibolite.
Crushed ivy and citrus leaf overlay an almost savory, salty notion of wet earth. The palate is rounded and juicy-almost bouncy with lively energy. Bright, lemon-fringed stone fruit notes skip away in such a joyful fashion that the underlying stony seriousness is almost skipped over. In coming years, the stoniness will gain the upper hand, but, for now, the playfulness of these aromas-leafy top notes and citric charm-quite rightly enjoy the limelight. This is lovely and slender, with a serious, stony, cool core and a beautifully long finish. Trimbach Riesling Frederic Emile 2016 375mlLuminous straw-yellow. Complex, mint-accented aromas of nectarine, tangerine and powdered stone, plus a hint of licorice. Then bright, juicy and dense, showing outstanding acid-sugar balance and a penetrating juiciness to the stone fruit and herbal flavors. Finishes multilayered and very long, displaying noteworthy clarity and limy cut on the saline finish. Wine lovers everywhere know just how great Frédéric Emile Rieslings can be, but this looks to be a real knockout in the making; I absolutely love this wine's mineral drive and precision. It pulls off the neat trick of being both very ageworthy and also lovely to drink right now. I was happy to know that my palate was still working after an extremely long day of tasting when I told Pierre that in this vintage of Frédéric Emile I found more of the Geisberg than the Osterberg (in most vintages, the wine is a blend of 60/40 Osterberg-Geisberg, at times even 70/30, but this year it's more like 55/45). The lemon-sherbet note here is really beautiful. Then comes a wealth of herbs, ranging from thyme to parsley, with a touch of sea salt, before turning to more floral nuances, such as cherries and almond blossom. The powerful acidity seems to surround the whole mouth and makes this almost like licking a lemon; the unmistakable dryness is all the more enjoyable because of it. Spring Bay Tasmanian Gin (700ml)The botanicals are steeped for 24 to 48 hours then additional Juniper and Liquorice Root are vapour infused in the neck of the copper pot still to give a traditional Juniper flavour at the front of the palate through to a sweet liquorice finish. This gin is triple distilled giving the spirit an ultra-smooth flavour despite the higher than normal ABV. For me this is an altogether gentle and delicate gin not that it doesn't have presence or flavour. More that it relies on its quality through craftmanship and quality ingredients. Juniper driven but highlighted with native bush botanicals that give a unique flavour and aromatic profile. I often find (Australia) native botanicals in gins overpower everything else but these are judiciously used and create a wonderful tasting gin.
