Hiedler Gaisberg Riesling 2021Sourced from two terraces and predominantly rooting in a rocky subsoil of paragneiss, Hiedler's 2021 Ried Gaisberg 1ÖTW Riesling is dense and spicy on the nose, showing ripe and concentrated bright fruit with subtle earthy notes. Anyone who thinks that dry riesling is always lean and austere should dive into this deep pool of ripe peach and apricot to discover the grape's sensual side. Gaisberg is often spectral, as if its flavors were placed in your hands by a ghost dressed as a bride. Part of that is present here, but there's also a quantum concentration of mineral, catapulted upward by a slingshot of acidity. The wine is so amazing it borders on the implausible.
The grip and the mere impact on the physical palate are impossible to resist. Yet there a higher octave of flavor that wisps up into the air like the vapors from frozen nitrogen. It's a concatenation of lemons and freesia; it alludes to basmati; it alludes, hauntingly, to white peaches and to blueberries, part of an incipience of sweetness that turns it from prose into music.
It's introverted but passionate, classical but not stodgy, and it is in every way wonderful. It almost isn't "Riesling" any more. It's just Gaisberg; I know it from Gobelsburg and Hirsch, and this site is quite particular, spectral and subtle; it whispers its strange tongue and you feel an opiate tingle - What is this wine doing to me? It smells a little like Champagne, this cool high chiming, this cryptic bliss. It is a very rare wine, that delivers as many poignant questions as this one does. Schloss Gobelsburg Gaisberg Riesling 2021The 2021 Riesling Ried Gaisberg is on gneiss, schist and amphibolite.
Crushed ivy and citrus leaf overlay an almost savory, salty notion of wet earth. The palate is rounded and juicy-almost bouncy with lively energy. Bright, lemon-fringed stone fruit notes skip away in such a joyful fashion that the underlying stony seriousness is almost skipped over. In coming years, the stoniness will gain the upper hand, but, for now, the playfulness of these aromas-leafy top notes and citric charm-quite rightly enjoy the limelight. This is lovely and slender, with a serious, stony, cool core and a beautifully long finish. Boris Champy Hautes Cotes de Beaune Blanc Montagne 382 2022From the Montagne de Cras, plot in Nantoux, the soils here is very varied, stony, but also full of clay. The 4-hectare plot is made up of 3 hectares of vines and 1 hectare of natural areas of great biodiversity: scree slopes, hedges, orchards, limestone grasslands with numerous orchids and even a few corm trees, which are extremely rare these days.
In the winery, the fruit is whole bunch pressed into part barrel (25% new) and part small stainless barrels and left to sit on lees for up to 12 months.
Rich and generous citrus fruits, honey and subtle floral notes, rounded out by a nice integration of oak and balanced acidity.

Gorgeous length defines the finish. The wine combines intensity and a certain lightness and freshness on the palate, as both ripe, yellow fruits (canned yellow peach, quince, and pear) interplay with fresher elements including mint and anise. Beaucastel Coudoulet Cotes du Rhone Blanc 2021The 2021 Côtes Du Rhône Coudoulet Blanc comes from two terroirs, one just across the A7 autoroute and one slightly further north. It has terrific aromatics of pear, crushed citrus, and white peach to go with a tight, medium-bodied, almost reductive (in a good way) style on the palate. It's not yet bottled, but this will certainly be an outstanding wine and will easily stand up beside a Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc. JEB DUNNUCK

Tapanappa 1.5m Tiers Chardonnay 2024The close spaced planting of this part of the Tiers vineyard imparts a slightly different flavour and textural feel to the Chardonnays from the old Tiers plantings. Intense aromas of tropical fruits, brioche and spices. The palate is ripe and textured although the chalky acid and light citrus edge hold the definition and line through to the long finish. Wow! This is something. I know many prefer the Tiers Chardonnay, but for the last two years I have leaned towards this 1.5m and I don't apologise for it. Elegance and purity seep through this wine's veins and I want it all.
Brian Croser describes 2024 as a model vintage and this release is tight and laser-like focused on opening. Concentrated stonefruit lands all the praise early on - the flavour intensity compared to the Tiers Chardonnay is telling and is due to a combination of close-planted vines and different clones. Grapefruit, slivers of almonds and fine drops of lemon juice draw out to a long finish. Baked cheesecake, vanilla pod, a touch of oyster shell and hints of brioche continue to peel back veneers of interest that seem to be brushed on ever so delicately. The precision is elite and the concentration supreme yet its presence is graceful and charming. Give it time to evolve and you'll be rewarded further more. Brilliant stuff. Tapanappa 1.5m Tiers Chardonnay 2023From a section of the Tiers vineyard close planted in 2003 using the Bernard clones 76 and 95. This is same same, but different to the old vine Tiers, a little fleshier, but it’s the texture that’s the main point of difference.
White stonefruit, pear, quite spicy and slightly dusty/peppery, honey and lime. The texture is a highlight, chalky and ‘mineral’, ripe lime and honey, white peach, spicy cinnamon oak, almond meal, with plenty of citrus bite on a finish of excellent length. Marvellous wine. To quote winemaker, Brian Croser, the ’23 Chardonnays are far from “overt.” I find that re-assuring, the vintage speaks and it’s beautifully fine with purity of fruit and acidity layered naturally, succinctly, making 1.5m poised for further ageing. Meyer lemon, lemon drop, nectarine, peach aromas with a hint of cashew – in other words an alluring introduction. Still incredibly youthful, offers a core of perfectly pitched citrus and stone fruits in balance and concentrated. Trimbach Riesling Frederic Emile 2016 375mlLuminous straw-yellow. Complex, mint-accented aromas of nectarine, tangerine and powdered stone, plus a hint of licorice. Then bright, juicy and dense, showing outstanding acid-sugar balance and a penetrating juiciness to the stone fruit and herbal flavors. Finishes multilayered and very long, displaying noteworthy clarity and limy cut on the saline finish. Wine lovers everywhere know just how great Frédéric Emile Rieslings can be, but this looks to be a real knockout in the making; I absolutely love this wine's mineral drive and precision. It pulls off the neat trick of being both very ageworthy and also lovely to drink right now. I was happy to know that my palate was still working after an extremely long day of tasting when I told Pierre that in this vintage of Frédéric Emile I found more of the Geisberg than the Osterberg (in most vintages, the wine is a blend of 60/40 Osterberg-Geisberg, at times even 70/30, but this year it's more like 55/45). The lemon-sherbet note here is really beautiful. Then comes a wealth of herbs, ranging from thyme to parsley, with a touch of sea salt, before turning to more floral nuances, such as cherries and almond blossom. The powerful acidity seems to surround the whole mouth and makes this almost like licking a lemon; the unmistakable dryness is all the more enjoyable because of it. Xanadu Stevens Road Chardonnay 2022It has all the hallmarks of the site – Block 2, off Stevens Road, obviously, all Gingin clone, whole-bunch pressed to French oak, wild fermentation. And while there’s lees stirring throughout its nine months in barrel, there’s no mlf. It’s still a little frisky from youth as the acidity holds sway, yet in-between pink grapefruit and lime juice, zest and pith, too. Dr Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling GG 2022The 2022 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Alte Reben Grosses Gewächs was made from centenarian vines, in the family since 1911. The nose hints at creaminess but not much more. The palate comes in with a lovely, pithy astringency coating the mouth with citrus intensity. This fills mouth and mind with stony elegance and citrus vividness, finishing on Meyer lemon edged with grapefruit spiciness. Very balanced, harmonious, zesty. Elegant. (Dry) ANNE KREBIEHL MW

Stunning concentration and succulence, but also impeccable balance this is a great Mosel GG that will give so much pleasure in the years to come. Shaw & Smith Lenswood Vineyard Chardonnay 2022An exceptional vintage for white wines. A lower pH, inherent freshness and phenolic bite, the artillery that delivers the impressive structural latticework necessary for further development. Really classy. Subdued aromas of cinnamon, sesame, quince, ginger and toasted hazelnut, with the barest hint of fruit. Better this way. The mid-weighted palate is pliant, nicely chewy and multilayered. The finish is exceptionally long, although I look forward to tasting again in another six or eight years after things unravel and meld. A cascade of yellow grapefruit juice, juiced green apples and lime sorbet. Elderflower and Acacia blossoms. A hint of green coconut and lemongrass. It's full of citrus zest with an almond milk creaminess and roast raw macadamia on the finish. Nutmeg, tahini and baked anzac biscuits. A harmony of high tones and deep base notes that presents a birds eye view of Hills chardonnay. There is real power and weight here but with plenty of fruit tension and enough malo buffering. Mac Forbes Little Yarra 'Gladysdale' Chardonnay 2021From a vineyard planted in Gladysdale in '09. Matured in seasoned barriques. My pick of the '21 single-vineyard chardonnays, this has a complex bouquet of just-picked nectarines, white flowers and oyster shells. The palate is nicely balanced, with good weight and concentration. It's also chalky textured, saline and long. And, like Mac Forbes' single-vineyard wines, in particular, it's been built to last. An exotically perfumed bouquet evokes fresh red and blue fruits, potpourri and botanical herbs that are complemented by an exotic spice note building in the glass. Stains the palate with intense raspberry, cherry and lavender pastille flavors that steadily deepen with air. Could the 2020 Gigondas be the best ever from this estate? The usual blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Mourvèdre that was destemmed and brought up in very old foudre, it has wonderful purity (which is a trait of the vintage) in its red and black fruits as well as notes of ground pepper, Provençal garrigue, and cedary spice. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, this is never the biggest or richest wine in the vintage yet it oozes Provence character, is perfectly balanced, has great tannins, and is going to deliver the goods for upwards of two decades.
