Mostly Sangiovese with 21% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Merlot.

Medium-bodied, pomegranate-themed juice but with depth and a vermouth tang, bitter herbs and some nice supple softness to it all, black cherry and bitter almond with a black olive twist. Chalky texture. Goodie. KASIA SOBIESIAK, The Wine Front

This release of Alto! Alto!! is right in the zone of where we want it to be. Fruit, deliciousness, and aromatic intrigue balanced by structure and unravelling layers of savoury complexity. Also made by one of our great fiends and somm about town Liam O'Brien. Thanks for this delicious drop Liam!

Bright purple/ruby. Medium weight, juicy, smashable palate, just the right amount of sour cherry and fine tannins. Sangiovese leads the way with red cherries and terracotta dust; Cab Sauv follows with blackcurrant, blackberry and a hint of cedar; Merlot fills out the finish with persistent fruit and an attractive tea leaf character.

    SPECIAL VALUE

A splash of malbec makes its way into this wine. Succulent and refreshing red, bright with blueberry and mulberry fruit character, some violet floral lift, minty herbs, clove, black olive and licorice. A feast for the senses in the scents. The palate rolls similarly, supple and bright in texture, medium to fuller weight but lively and energetic with each mouthful. A coolness in the wine perhaps, at least a restraint that seems to defy the price point. And we're good with that. Brilliant value. MIKE BENNIE, Halliday Wine Companion

  22. Suertes del Marques 7 Fuentes Tinto 2020
Suertes del Marques 7 Fuentes Tinto 2020

Village wine. Suertes del Marqués village red is a blend of Listán Negro and Tintilia. The style of García’s entry-level red has evolved considerably since the early days. Today it’s a prettier, lighter-bodied and more thirst-quenching wine. The main component remains the wildly aromatic Listán Negro with a small portion of Tintilia, entirely fermented in small tanks with indigenous yeast and a short, gentle maceration.

The name refers to the seven climats in the D.O. of Valle de la Orotava. Today Suertes draws the raw materials from 35 separate plots, from vines ranging from 10 to 100 years old, at a range of altitudes (up to 800 metres) on the slopes of Mount Teide. The Listán Negro is grown mainly in cordón trenzado, while the Tintilia (from the Bocanegra plot) is trellised to the espaldera system. Each parcel begins vinification separately in stainless steel before blending and aging in small concrete tanks (70%) and mature French demi-muids (30%).

  26. Domaine Plageoles Gaillac Contre Pied 2019
Domaine Plageoles Gaillac Contre Pied 2019

Red. Organic. To be contre-pied is to be diametrically opposed to something. In this case, this carbonic Duras is the opposite of the rustic, sleepy wines associated with this variety (and plenty of Gaillac rouge in general). This wine originates from a block of clay/limestone soil in Cahuzac-sur-Vère. The winemaking takes in a short carbonic maceration followed by six months aging in concrete tank.

Florent Plageoles told us that he felt that Duras grapes would take to the Beaujolais treatment, et voila, Contre Pied has now become a mainstay of the Plageoles roster. Expect crunchy acidity and thirst-quenching satisfaction—sappy red fruits, invigorating and tensile acid and soft grainy tannins surround a plump, cherry-like weight. Hints of dark chocolate and spice round out the steely skeleton. In short, a super delicious and unique carbo-styled red.

The old La Coudraye, which changed to La Côte back in the 2018 vintage to reflect the variety of origins for the fruit. This is a sample drawn before bottling. A vibrant hue in the glass, and a beautifully pure and eager nose of black cherry, blackcurrant and damson fruits. The palate remains true to the nose, with that same sense of purity and an underbelly of soft chalk, before a sappy cherry-skin character at the end. Modestly extracted tannins, firm but not over done, with nice acidity for this warmer vintage, this should evolve nicely for some years, but should be ready to go within a year or two. Previously this wine was only available to the Canary Island distributor however after some convincing Jonatan has released some of this light red for us to play with. It is pure Listán Negro from old vines in the Paraje Las Suertes. It fermented destemmed in concrete vats and was pressed after four days to finish fermenting without skins in 500 litre used oak barrels, where the wine was kept for three months.

Beautifully ruby hued showing a spicy cinnamon and dried herb edge with tangy red raspberry, cherry and summer plum fruits with super light tannins, a stony element and subtle floral notes. It is supple, but with some nice zesty notes and great depth, should be served with a slight chill. STUART NORTHEY, ANONYMOUS WINE

50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 14% Cabernet Franc. Tasted alongside the 2020 and while they’re obviously similar, there’s more acidity and leafy perfume in the 2021. Blackcurrant, raspberry and leaf, tobacco, and spicy perfume, pencil/cedar oak. Medium-bodied, tannin sits so nicely within the wine, fresh and long, with classic fragrance in with that. So ‘minerally’ and cool. Very long. Precision and definition mark it out as a wine of class and fine filigreed deliciousness. It’s just so good, energetic, stony and definitely worthy of cellaring. Superb. Tasted: Dec 2022; Alcohol: 13.5%; Price: $48; Drink: 2025-2038+; (95) GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

Deep-ish purple-red colour, glowing and bright; there are fresh mulberry, blackcurrant and raspberry aromas paired with a delicate sheen of barely perceptible nuttiness from oak (30% new). The wine is tautly focused, poised and long on the palate, refined and vibrant. It's just a babe and will reward cellaring big-time. (95) HUONE HOOKE, The Real Review

Offering harmony and structure within an opulent framed of rich fruit and silky tannins, this is a gratifying red offering awesome value. The enticing bouquet shows blackcurrant, mulberry, tobacco and cedary oak characters with a delicate floral overtone. The palate displays amazing depth and persistency, wonderfully complemented by delectable fruit flavours with spicy nuances. Trinity Hill The Gimblett Bordeaux Blend 2019
Aromas of dark berries and hay, tobacco and gravelly soils, there’s a core of concentration and power with new oak and violets, red berries and energy. Complex, youthful and engaging. On the palate - though very primary still there’s a silky textured core of fruit contrasted by polished tannins and salivating acidity. The sweetness of new barrel adds depth and complexity. As the wine relaxes in glass the flavours and textures become more intense and focused coating the palate with flavour and concentration. A lengthy finish, lovely mouthfeel and length. Excellent drinking from late 2023/2024 through 2035. (96) CAM DOUGLAS MW

Trinity Hill's 2018 The Gimblett is a 50-50 blend of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in 100% new French oak for 21 months. The floral overtones of the Franc really show up on the nose, while the palate is more about cassis and a streamlined, concentrated, linear presentation. Medium to full-bodied, it adds softly dusty tannins on the finish, along with hints of mocha and vanilla. Approachable now, it should still be going strong in a decade's time. Or you can create any kind of beautiful Yuzu cocktail.

  45. Mount Horrocks Cabernet Sauvignon 2022
    Mount Horrocks Cabernet Sauvignon 2022
From biodynamically (certified) grown vines. This switches things up for the general character of Clare Valley cabernet wines, lighter, brighter, frisky almost, lots of greenery and peppery spice, almost minty elements in dark chocolate, cassis, boysenberry characters to taste. There's a crispness to the wine, bright and lively, the herbaceous notes leading the way but not totally defining the wine. Fine, light tannins hold court. The perfume matches the flavours, a big fog of freshness, herbal detail and almost a sense of 'purple' if synesthesia is your thing. All up, a wine of vigour and good energy, though you'll be wanting cabernet on the more vibrant side overall. MIKE BENNIE, Halliday Wine Companion

  46. Fukuju Junmai 720ml
    Fukuju Junmai 720ml

The name Fukuju is derived from one of the Seven Lucky Gods in Japanese mythology. Fukuju is a relatively small brewery, making artisan and craft sake. Current owner Yasafuku San is 13th generation.

The house style is very elegant. The water in Nada/Kobe is called Miyamizu, and it is hard water by Japanese standards, full of minerals and is famous water in the ‘sake world’. Nada regional style is dry and has good grip with spiciness.

Water’s influence is very significant in Sake style, and Fukuju use this Miyamizu as well as blending pure water (filtered soft water) to make particular style of Sake. They take ‘water’ seriously in making and developing new way of Sake making.

Fukuju is traditional with a modern approach at the same time. Since the large earthquake in this area in 1995, they built their brewery which is Seismic structure, and are progressing to create ecofriendly and sustainable way of Sake making.

The water in Nada/Kobe is called Miyamizu and is famous because it's full of minerals. Fukuju Junmai Sake is dry and has good grip with spiciness.
