Suertes del Marques 7 Fuentes Tinto 2020Village wine. Suertes del Marqués village red is a blend of Listán Negro and Tintilia. The style of García’s entry-level red has evolved considerably since the early days. Today it’s a prettier, lighter-bodied and more thirst-quenching wine. The main component remains the wildly aromatic Listán Negro with a small portion of Tintilia, entirely fermented in small tanks with indigenous yeast and a short, gentle maceration.
The name refers to the seven climats in the D.O. of Valle de la Orotava. Today Suertes draws the raw materials from 35 separate plots, from vines ranging from 10 to 100 years old, at a range of altitudes (up to 800 metres) on the slopes of Mount Teide. The Listán Negro is grown mainly in cordón trenzado, while the Tintilia (from the Bocanegra plot) is trellised to the espaldera system. Each parcel begins vinification separately in stainless steel before blending and aging in small concrete tanks (70%) and mature French demi-muids (30%).

Domaine Plageoles Gaillac Contre Pied 2019Red. Organic. To be contre-pied is to be diametrically opposed to something. In this case, this carbonic Duras is the opposite of the rustic, sleepy wines associated with this variety (and plenty of Gaillac rouge in general). This wine originates from a block of clay/limestone soil in Cahuzac-sur-Vère. The winemaking takes in a short carbonic maceration followed by six months aging in concrete tank.
Florent Plageoles told us that he felt that Duras grapes would take to the Beaujolais treatment, et voila, Contre Pied has now become a mainstay of the Plageoles roster. Expect crunchy acidity and thirst-quenching satisfaction—sappy red fruits, invigorating and tensile acid and soft grainy tannins surround a plump, cherry-like weight. Hints of dark chocolate and spice round out the steely skeleton. In short, a super delicious and unique carbo-styled red.

Y.amirault Amirault Bourgueil Cote 50 2022The old La Coudraye, which changed to La Côte back in the 2018 vintage to reflect the variety of origins for the fruit. This is a sample drawn before bottling. A vibrant hue in the glass, and a beautifully pure and eager nose of black cherry, blackcurrant and damson fruits. The palate remains true to the nose, with that same sense of purity and an underbelly of soft chalk, before a sappy cherry-skin character at the end. Modestly extracted tannins, firm but not over done, with nice acidity for this warmer vintage, this should evolve nicely for some years, but should be ready to go within a year or two. Suertes del Marques La Floridita Tinto 2021Previously this wine was only available to the Canary Island distributor however after some convincing Jonatan has released some of this light red for us to play with. It is pure Listán Negro from old vines in the Paraje Las Suertes. It fermented destemmed in concrete vats and was pressed after four days to finish fermenting without skins in 500 litre used oak barrels, where the wine was kept for three months.
Beautifully ruby hued showing a spicy cinnamon and dried herb edge with tangy red raspberry, cherry and summer plum fruits with super light tannins, a stony element and subtle floral notes. Boysenberry, dusty spice, floral aromatics, tobacco, leaf and mint. Medium-bodied, powdery tannin, very ‘mineral’ acidity, bright but sitting in the wine well, raspberry and plum, complex and chalky firm on a long finish, a little seaweed in the mix. Crisp. Tasted alongside the 2020 and while they’re obviously similar, there’s more acidity and leafy perfume in the 2021. Blackcurrant, raspberry and leaf, tobacco, and spicy perfume, pencil/cedar oak. Medium-bodied, tannin sits so nicely within the wine, fresh and long, with classic fragrance in with that. So ‘minerally’ and cool. Very long. The compression of power is becoming a key feature of what is one of Australia's finest white wines. It's refreshing to see the varietal hegemony of the usual suspects being consistently challenged. This, from a celebrated cool year, is at the start of a long and promising journey, somewhat shy, but layered with interest. Green almond, pear, pickled peach, pineapple quince, lemon balm, mint, young sage, oyster shell and a rocky, pumice-like mineral note, which is echoed by the ultrafine pithiness of the palate. Trinity Hill The Gimblett Bordeaux Blend 2019Aromas of dark berries and hay, tobacco and gravelly soils, there’s a core of concentration and power with new oak and violets, red berries and energy. Complex, youthful and engaging. On the palate - though very primary still there’s a silky textured core of fruit contrasted by polished tannins and salivating acidity. The sweetness of new barrel adds depth and complexity. As the wine relaxes in glass the flavours and textures become more intense and focused coating the palate with flavour and concentration. Prieure Lichine 2018 375mlThe 2018 Prieuré-Lichine is gorgeous. Bright and racy in the glass, the 2018 impresses with its magnificent purity of fruit. In 2018, Prieuré-Lichine has terrific energy and cut. It is perhaps a bit less creamy than the 2016, but also impeccable in its balance. Part of that is driven by the higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend in 2018. Rose petal, lavender, mint and spice add nuance to a core of red/purplish fruit. Tasted two times. The 2018 Château Prieuré-Lichine is an attractive, elegant Margaux offering classic, pretty red and black fruits, cedary spice, and dried flowers aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied, elegant, and again, with an incredible floral character, it has a supple, rounded texture that's going to allow it to drink nicely in its youth, yet it should also evolve for 15+ years or more. Diamantakos Xinomavro 2020A wine of pale ruby colour, medium aromatic intensity. On the nose, it delivers red fruit dominated by red cherry, raspberry, cranberry, and red plums; black fruit mainly bramble, damson, black cherries, and black plums; herbaceous aromas, such as tomato leaf, tomato paste, olives; spice such as allspice. Fruit is enveloped in restrained oak influence giving aromas of vanilla, cream, and butterscotch.
On the palate, the wine is dry, with medium + acidity, medium body, framed by fine-grained medium + tannins, firm but suave versus red, black fruit extract, a layer of botanical flavours and medium alcohol. It displays medium intensity of flavours but persistent and vibrant finish. Its tannins and acidity levels are balanced versus fruit and alcohol integration; a clean, elegant easygoing start on the palate but followed with layers of complexity, juiciness and characteristic herbs.
