Domaine de Bellene Savigny Les Beaune Rouge Jean Ferte 1er 2022This is a relatively new wine to the Bellene releases and like the Francois Potel Homage wine, this is a blend of two sources, 1er Cru Haut Jarrons and 1er Cru Peuillets.
Perfumed cherry, drying petals, turned earth and limestone create the backdrop for a palate that is beautifully pure fruited and brimming with energy. Like many of the Bellene 2022s it has the combination of ripe fruit and then the driving limestone drying structure that ultimately gives this wine so much energy and lift. It finsihes with a lovely chewy tannin profile. I'd love to see this with some duck; lively "crunchy" character of the wine would be great with food. For the money, it's really smart Burgundy. Domaine SC Guillard Gevrey Chambertin Reniard VV 2022Deep crimson, quite deep color. The nose is layered with berry fruit, raspberry, wild strawberry, cassis and briary fruit. There is lovely perfume lift and a purity of fruit, a good lick of new oak just appears, it is a super fresh and delineated wine. The palate is beautifully balanced and finely structured with spice, red berry loads of silky tannins and a long driven finish. The old vines providing depth and persistence. There is again very good energy to the solidly dense and voluminous flavors that are at once generous yet grippy and rustic on the firm finish. Domaine Rapet Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Les Vergelesses 2021Located just below Ile de Vergelesses, the soils are heavier here with a more clay component. This has helped in the cooler 21 vintage, adding more weight to the fenetic florals.

The 2020 Rippon Mature Vine Pinot Noir is restrained on the nose, with an earthy (i.e., of the earth, gray rocks, etc.) countenance that I find highly engaging. In the mouth, the fruit comes alive with cherry and cranberry, pomegranate pearls, graphite and pencil lead, layers of black tea, coal dust and brine. This is dark without being heavy or dense, and it’s very fine. The silty tannins linger through the finish and seem to settle on the palate, which is pleasurable. Love this wine. Has the early supple appeal of Savigny but it's not simple. Red fruits, brown spice and lingering florals plus a dusting of background wood characterise the nose. Alexandre Brault Monthelie Les Riottes 1er Cru 2020I sometimes think Monthelie reds are a forgotten member of the Burg family. So often they can provide so much immediacy and enjoyment and often for a fraction of the cost of a wine from neighbouring Volnay. This is no exception. Turned earth, amaro herbs frames juice and nicely ripe rep and black fruits. The spice element from judicious oak use is also a lovely addition and theres a trail of tannins that afford the wine freedom without sacrificing form. Ooh - now that's a beauty - a more sophisticated width of complex and attractive flavour. In the mouth - fresh and energetic - really complex - a little more blocky from the tannin today - this will also benefit from your patience but the finishing flavour, working its way through the tannin is completely delicious. DuMol Wester Reach Chardonnay Russian River Valley 2022A bright yellow color, the 2022 Chardonnay Wester Reach is a textbook example of this vintage, with a lot of elegance and a wide drinking window. From the Russian River Valley and aged in 25% new oak barrels for 11 months, it takes on more glycerol richness and a rounded profile. A great wine out of the gate, it captures the sunny feel of the region, but it's light on its feet and closes with a great finish. A riper if less refined and airy nose speaks of red and dark currant aromas that are laced with newly turned earth, exotic tea and an interesting hint of orange peel. There is better volume to the medium-bodied flavors that display good power and mid-palate density before culminating in a youthfully austere, firm and nicely balanced finale. This is consistently one of the domaine's better wines and so it is again in 2021. OUTSTANDING, BURGHOUND…. The nose is very pleasing, all in red fruit with a little white pepper, whereas the other cuvees have all been more floral. Dry River Pinot Noir 2020A powerful and seductive bouquet with a core of pinosity then aromas of dark red berries, mineral soil, a fine savoury, dried herb quality and youthful energy. Toasty barrel and dark spices of oak are noticeable, but not misplaced. Fantastic on the palate with a core of youthful energy, baking spices and dark berry fruit flavours, firm tannins and plenty of acidity. The heartbeat of pinosity is strong, holding my attention. Spice, dried roses, a pleasing earthy bass, bright cherry and cranberry fruit. It's medium-bodied, firm and bright, with a distinct 'mineral' crunch and freshness, spicy too, earth and floral notes mingling to great effect. Almost that sort of bloody character you get in Pommard (apologies for the reference, in a way), and a long crisp finish that offers a pleasant amount of orange peel bitterness. Beautiful wine... Dry River Pinot Noir 2022The 2022 Pinot Noir leads with coffee grounds, black cherry, satsuma plum skin, Szechuan peppercorn, pink peppercorns, a hint of raspberry leaf tea and graphite. The wine smells savory while delivering all of these things. In the mouth, it is fine-boned but persistent and behaves in a gentle, splayed sort of manner through the finish. It's a very pretty wine, one that is quiet now, but I feel it will age slowly and elegantly in the cellar. This is a wine to drink now and to perhaps misunderstand in doing so. Or it's a wine to be patient with and reap the benefits after five or so years and beyond. There is excellent underlying tension to the solidly delineation and mineral-driven medium weight flavors that deliver fine depth and persistence on the slightly more structured finale.
