Wellington & Wolfe Wolfe at the Door Pinot Noir 2023
A lightly funky Tamar Valley pinot noir fermented with 15% whole bunches before three months in oak and bottling with minimal SO2. A light, airy ruby in the glass with aromas of bright red cherry and red plum with hints of leaf litter, spice, light amaro herbs, raspberry flan, citrus blossom and light gamey notes. Spacious, savoury and stony with plenty of interest. DAVE BROOKES, James Halliday

  4. Moorooduc Estate Devil Bend Creek Pinot Noir 2024
Moorooduc Estate Devil Bend Creek Pinot Noir 2024

I know we have said it before but honestly, how do the McIntyres do this wine for this kind of money? It always impresses and considering this is all hand-harvested, wild yeast fermented, and spends time in top-notch French oak you just have to smile with a glass in front of you.

There is always a generosity here and 2024 has embraced that vibe  but added a little sappy detail to elevate the stakes a little more.. A touch of wild cherry and raspberry fruit, that amaro and citrus twang you often see and a sprinkle of sweet spice and whole black pepper that entices you in. It's plump through the middle with succulent fruit that zips along a fine line of tannins that bind all the fruit together beautifully.

It's soft and supple with plenty of Joie-de-vie while delivering a serious edge that most producers in the Mornigton must be pretty jealous about.

  5. The Pass Marlborough Pinot Noir 2022
The Pass Marlborough Pinot Noir 2022
The name 'The Pass' tells a great story. It's named after the highway linking Marlborough's key wine regions - the Awatere and Wairau Valleys. Once just a rough bridle track cutting through brown mountains, green forests, and rows of vineyards, today it's still one of the most scenic drives in New Zealand and while Marlborough is more famous for its white it produces some cracking pinot that is plush, generous and rammed with flavour.

Crafted by Stu Marfell and the Foley Wines team the secret to the it's character lies in the blend of two Marlborough sub-regions which Stu Marfell knows well - he grew up not far from the vineyards that supply fruit for The Pass.

Redcurrant, raspberry, and cherry flavours to the fore, wrapped in a gentle layer of sweet spice and ground pepper. This is a wine of pillowy red fruit, elegance, its fine, silky tannins carry the plush fruit to a long and lush close. Great stuff capturing all the generosity of pinot from Marlborough while balancing freshness and energy too.

  7. Beyond the Pines “Viceroy” Syrah 2021
Beyond the Pines “Viceroy” Syrah 2021

This is the 2nd release of the 'Viceroy' Syrah for young winemaker Matt Keoghan who has worked extensively locally and abroad to try and hone in his craft from places such as Hermitage, Barolo and ChateauNeuf Du Pape.

The vineyard from which these wines are made from are on the GI border of Mclarenvale (Clarendon) and Adelaide Hills from the Wind River Vineyard which is family owned and farmed. The soils are Buck Shot ironstones and quartz through Sandy loams on a light orange and red clay base. This leads to leaner alcohol wine and some slight reduction but almost pithy tannin and slurpee acidity.

The wines are more savoury than what is usually seen from the Adelaide Hills with great structural framing around a blue/black fruited palate. The lift from the hallmark whole bunch kiss, an almost mineral fresh finish, this wine is really letting the fruit speak rather than the winemaking, with elevage in neutral Hogs Heads and all Natural fermentation and minimal sulphur added prior to bottling.

  8. Monte Ronca Colle Marianna Soave 2023
Monte Ronca Colle Marianna Soave 2023
The wines of Monte Ronca and Colle Marianna are the creation of local specialist Antonio Fattori, based in the commune of Ronca, in the heart of Garganega country. His family began as Soave producers, and a little over 100 years ago they bought a 12-hectare property on the eastern edge of the Valpolicella denomination, where the vineyards cover the ridge dividing the Alpine Valley and Illasi Valley at elevations of close to 500 metres.

Made from 100% Garganega planted in the basalt vineyards of Monte Calvarino. The fruit was picked at the end of September, crushed and fermented in 85% stainless steel and 15% large format casks. At 450 metres, Garganega can only just reach ripeness, so this is where a small amount of appassimento fruit works well (around 10%) to add flavour and texture while holding its cooler structure. The wine is charmingly floral on the nose, with notes of peach and green almond. On the palate, the wine is textural and juicy with citrus, stone fruit, minerals and a touch of spice.

  9. Provenance Golden Plains Pinot Noir 2022
Provenance Golden Plains Pinot Noir 2022

Made from pinot noir grown in the Geelong, Ballarat and Henty regions of Victoria.

You have to admire the complexity on offer here. It’s cohesive but it’s all happening. It tastes of chicory, twigs, orange peel, black cherries and foresty, mint-like notes, the finish and the tannin then infused with peppercorns and more. You get more than your money’s worth. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front

Fruit is 60/35/5% Ballarat/Geelong/Henty. Matured in French barriques and puncheons (10% new). Medium crimson red, this is an excellent introduction to Provenance's range of 2022 pinots. Brambly red fruits intermingle with a little potpourri while the palate is flavourful, gently textured and pliant, persistent tannins in support. PHLIP RICH, Halliday Wine Companion

  10. Sven Joschke ‘V.S.V.P’ Fortified Syrah 2022
Sven Joschke ‘V.S.V.P’ Fortified Syrah 2022
Taking a little inspiration from our Portuguese friends, here’s our Barossa Vintage P@rt. A.K.A Very.Special.Vintage.P@ort . Early picked Syrah spread over three nally bins, foot stomped twice a day to extract maximum colour and tannin. Whilst we didn’t adopt the tradtional lagar approach, Motely Crue accompanied us on this stomping journey. Aged Brandy Spirit added at a mild baume of 3 arrested the ferment at 52gms residual. Must was immediately pressed to tank, settled and bottled shortly after with zero fining or filtration and no oak. The result, a complex balance between savoury and sweet savoury, liquorice spice, lavender and violets. SVEN JOSCHKE

  13. Arfion Spring Pinot Noir 2023
    Arfion Spring Pinot Noir 2023
Originally from New Zealand, Dave Mackintosh established Arfion with his father Brian and brother Jimmy in 2011. Dave has been obsessed with making wine since '98 and likes to delve deep on a broad spectrum of styles. Sourcing grapes from highly skilled, sustainable growers from across the Yarra, they ensure site and variety are in harmony throughout the season with low impact winemaking at their heart. They do abide by one rule. All wines must deliver good times.

Well, that rule has not been broken here. What a belter of a pinot noir. It says 'Spring' pinot but this will be slurppable all summer long so don't you worry about that. This is all about straight up juicy fruit and absolutely gluggably styled pinot that is light on its feet, crunchy and bursting with fruit. Lashings of raspberry and red cherry with clove, white pepper and a melange of fresh ground sweet spice. It's slippery and so easy to drink and while it comes of feeling pretty and light it still packs plenty of punch. Absolutely delicious!

  16. Lethbridge Pinot Noir 2021 375ml
    Lethbridge Pinot Noir 2021 375ml

About 50% whole bunches and 50% new French barriques. Bright crimson. A little more complex than the also very good 2022, which is on release too. Red fruits and rose petals together with a touch of reduction, which adds to the wine, giving it sapidity. Savoury and structured and with lots of energy. Needs time and food. An excellent showing. (95) PHILIP RICH, Halliday Wine Company

Sourced from four single vineyards in Geelong, two in the Moorabool Valley (Hillside Haven & Springbank) and two from the Bellarine (Hat Rock & Suma Park)

Each parcel was treated the same; wild yeast fermented with around 50% whole bunches. The wine was then matured for 10 months in 35% new French oak barriques. Malolactic conversion finished in spring with only minimal sulfur additions.

This is a Pinot that attracts first with its aroma of mushroom, and earth, enticing with some exotic dark cherry, wet leaves and a hint of jasmine. Following the scent, there is the anticipation of taste, and if you have chosen well, expect some flavours of dark cherry with undercurrents of earth and spice. Texture-wise, this Pinot has a smooth and silky mouthfeel. Flavour, body, and finish built to drink on release or age.

  21. Syrahmi Demi Heathcote Shiraz 2023
    Syrahmi Demi Heathcote Shiraz 2023

Demi is such a vital expression of Heathcote shiraz. It’s also an essential expression of value, from a small producer. There’s complexity here. There’s juicy fruit. There’s fistfuls of spice and yet there’s a general we-are-one cohesion. Blue, black and red summer berry flavours, an ironstone element, woodsy spices roasted in an iron pan and modest inputs from florals. It’s a better wine than its asking price would suggest. It’s firm, confident and flavoursome. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, the wine front

Red earth, black cherries and olive tapenade pronounce themselves. There's a charming rustic character to this wine - much like the person behind it. It's got grunt, spice and power however it's a very graceful medium-bodied red. The palate is loaded with complexity  - black and purple fruits sit alongside a graphite minerality and oh-so-soothing tannins. Easily loveable and very much enjoyable! KAYLEEN REYNOLDS

The 2022 Soave Classico is a total pleasure on the nose. Sweet smoke and mint nuances complement tropical green melon notes. This soothes with its soft textures while stimulating the senses with a zesty mix of brisk acidity and candied citrus. It tapers off crisp and clean with an inner floral resonance as lemon oil traces slowly fade. I would drink this any night of the week. What a treat. ERIC GUIDO, Vinous.com

Walsh & Sons Felix Shiraz 2021

Grown in the sandy, clay soils of our Osmington family vineyard. Planted in 1995 with rows running north to south on a slight northeast facing slope. The vineyard is certified biodynamic. We treat it like a veg patch, heavy compost in autumn and sheep snapping the odd wire as they browse in winter.

20% handpicked early April before machine harvesting 2-days later. The whole bunches added to vat, the machine component going on top, no crushing or destemming. Wild fermented on skins, until dry. Pressed to a mix of new & old French barrels. A single racking after the Spring equinox otherwise it sits on full lees until January, topping every two weeks. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation from Autumn to Spring giving a natural CO2 cover during maturation. The wine remains undisturbed with minimal sulphur added prior to bottling in February. High-quality, smaller corks provide a more drinkable style through bottle aging. The wine is unfined & unfiltered so may present some harmless deposits in the bottle.

SPECIAL VALUE. A four-vineyard, six-clone blend; 20% wholes bunches, 15% new oak. A bright crimson red. A lifted bouquet redolent of summer red fruits, poached rhubarb, rose bush and white pepper. The energetic palate is light to medium bodied with the wine's fine-grained tannins and bright acidity making for a delicious and refreshing mouthful. Good, nay, great now and over the next 3–4 years. (95) PHILIP RICH, Wine Companion

Gosh this is an attractive wine. So many violets and indeed so redolent generally of a garden in bloom. Blue and red berried fruit flavours come melted with potpourri, sweet spice, leaf matter and twigs. Fruit and florals are the drivers but then the extras are tucked within. Mint and blood orange characters are here too, along with a decent crack of tannin. This is obviously meant to be consumed in its youth but even so, a quick double-decant does it a world of good. There’s fabulous drinking to be had here. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, Wine Front

Mulline Wines is the project of Ben Mullen and Ben Hine, crafting small-batch, site-focused wines from Geelong’s cool-climate vineyards. With a hands-off approach and a focus on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Mulline delivers vibrant, elegant wines that capture the purity and character of the region.

  42. Pieropan Soave Classico 2023
    Pieropan Soave Classico 2023
Leonildo ‘Nino’ Pieropan, who sadly passed away in 2018, was the first to show the world just how great Garganega, and Italian white wine, can be. He recognised the importance of terroir early on, acquiring various hillside vineyards (including Pigno, Becco, Boiolo, Tondo, Palestrello and La Santa) and expanding the prestigious Calvarino and La Rocca vineyards, first made as single vineyard crus in 1971 and 1978 respectively.

Today, sons Dario (winemaker) and Andrea (viticulturist) continue the family tradition. The brothers have converted all of their vineyards to organic and are overseeing the new winery being built amongst the vineyards just outside the village.

Mostly Garganega with about 10-15% Trebbiano di Soave, this is wonderfully aromatic - not a common feature of Soave - with floral notes (cherry blossom), citrus, stone fruit and almond. The palate is delicate and focussed, with excellent depth and lovely overall balance.

    Delamere Sparkling Cuvee NV

Delamere Vineyards were planted in 1982 in the Pipers River region in northeast Tasmania making it one of the oldest plantings not only in the region but in Tasmania. They have 6.5ha under vine and its age makes it a rare resource in Tasmania. The ironstone rich soils are perfectly suited to the cultivars of pinot noir and chardonnay, and was established in the traditional French design used in Burgundy and Champagne.

The low yield per vine and the reflective heat from the ground produces wines with superior depth of flavour and ripe well-developed tannins. Vine age and subsequent natural balance are key factors in the consistent production of wines with great structure and harmony.

Perfumed and pretty on the nose but then racy on the palate. It feels like a low-dosage style. Strawberries, lime blossom, grapefruit and lemon rind. It all sizzles out through the finish, with length to burn. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, the winefront

  45. Two Tonne TMV Pinot Noir 2024
Two Tonne TMV Pinot Noir 2024
Fragrant notes of spiced cherry and rose mix with rosemary and mulch on the nose. A mass of sweet spices and black cherries are tempered by earthy flavours. The palate is alive and inviting, cheek puckering tannins add dimension. A raspy spine of bitter chocolate phenolics anchors the wine, tapering out on the finish. This is a bone-crushingly delicious pinot that's high on affordability. GABRIELLE POY

Two Tonne EST Pinot Noir 2024
From the volcanic soils on the Freycinet coast in the east, this is laden with spices and wafts of red and black cherries. The purity of the fruit is off the charts, it's vibrant and alive with a  tempting minerally sizzle pulsating through the core. A fine boned beauty from the east coast. GABRIELLE POY

  48. Sandro De Bruno Soave 2023
    Sandro De Bruno Soave 2023
This is a lovely Soave that belies its simple DOC. From the lower lying but mature vineyards close to Monte Calvarina, and still from the rich, fertile volcanic soils of which Sandro is so passionate. Raised only in stainless steel to preserve the garganega's freshness and verve, it nevertheless over-delivers on personality and texture. A beautiful, focussed Soave for every table.

100% Garganega from 50 year old vineyards around the "Colline Vulcaniche" near Monte Calvarina at 100-150m ASL, cold macerated for 18 hours before fermentation in stainless steel, then ageing in stainless steel on fine lees for 6 months (with weekly battonage) before bottling. Screwcap.

Unmistakably Soave, this has classic lime and grapefruit aromatics, almond skin and fresh green herbs on the nose. The palate is alive with mineral energy and a crunch of acidity.
