Xavier Goodridge is part of the new wave of progressive, low-intervention winemakers in Australia, known for crafting pure, vibrant, and honest wines. Based in Victoria, Xavier previously worked alongside Patrick Sullivan, a leading figure in the modern Australian wine movement and one of Gippsland's burgeoning wine scene's ambassador. Xavier has developed a similarly thoughtful and sustainable approach to farming and winemaking and you can see that in the purity and expressive nature of all his wines.

Xavier's philosophy is built around organic and biodynamic viticulture, focusing on minimal inputs in both vineyard and winery. He believes that great wine is made in the vineyard, not manipulated in the cellar. The result? Wines that are alive, expressive, and transparent to place.

The Pa Pa Pinot Noir is one of Xavier's signature wines and a brilliant reflection of his hands-off, terroir-driven style from Gippsland. The fruit is Handpicked , fermented naturally with indigenous yeasts and partial whole bunch fermentation to bring perfume and spice. This has wonderful aromatic intensity flowing from the glass with heady perfume and a wonderful floral note. It's juicy, showing off a lively core of red cherries, cranberries, and wild strawberries, with hints of savoury spice, dried herbs, and a subtle earthiness underneath. It's on the light side of medium-bodied, incredibly bright and energetic, but with enough depth to keep it interesting. The tannins are soft and silky, and the finish is lifted and refreshing. This is a seriously drinkable Pinot Noir - joyful, pure, and super expressive.

Sourced from a range of Vale sites, this is at the ‘vin de soif’ end of the Aphelion grenache roster. Grenache in this zone can be juicy and jubey, but not this. It’s a thread that runs through the Welkin range, with fruitful pleasure in a mid-weight zone tempered by savoury structure. Macerated strawberries and tart raspberries, redcurrant, red licorice, rhubarb and orange, pink peppercorn and a seasoning of dusty spice. It’s bright and lithe, savoury and zippy – a fine all-rounder at table that can take a gentle chill. MARCUS ELLIS, Halliday Wine Companion

Seems like my brilliant treatise on whelks fell on deaf ears. Oh well, sometimes it feels like I’m feeding strawberries to pigs here. And speaking of strawberries…

Poached strawberry, raspberry, lemon thyme and rosemary perfume, hazelnut, candied orange peel and mint. Juicy, strawberry, kind of sweet and succulent, but also has a little savoury stony stuff, nutty things and solid length too, and gee it’s a fun little wine. Nice. Kind of like a big rosato in a way. I know we have said it before but honestly, how do the McIntyres do this wine for this kind of money? It always impresses and considering this is all hand-harvested, wild yeast fermented, and spends time in top-notch French oak you just have to smile with a glass in front of you.

There is always a generosity here and 2024 has embraced that vibe  but added a little sappy detail to elevate the stakes a little more.. A touch of wild cherry and raspberry fruit, that amaro and citrus twang you often see and a sprinkle of sweet spice and whole black pepper that entices you in. It's plump through the middle with succulent fruit that zips along a fine line of tannins that bind all the fruit together beautifully.

It's soft and supple with plenty of Joie-de-vie while delivering a serious edge that most producers in the Mornigton must be pretty jealous about.

Pete Schell's Papillon and I have had a thing going for a while. If I spy it on a wine list it's often what I'll go for as it consistently delivers a great drinking experience and matches a range of foods. This year it's 66/31/3% grenache/cinsault/counoise 3%. Spacious, sapid and energetic, it's all raspberries and cranberries daubed with exotic spice, rose petals, sour cherry, dried herbs and stone. This is 66% grenache, 31% cinsault and 3% counoise. Always the shapeshifter is Papillon.
Cool and fresh. Lively and bright. A chillable, slurpy, crunchy red emerges. Red cherry, raspberry, cranberry, alpine herbs, some menthol-like lift, aniseed and pepper, a touch of white chocolate. Good energy here. Some real get up and go. Freshness implicit. Cool. MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Front

Light cherry red hue. Raspberry, blueberry and anise aromas. Bright on the palate: juicy raspberry fruits with hints of rosemary and dusty earth adding complexity. This wine has dropped the Bozeto styling and is now simply called Exopto. New name, same vibrant, great-value Rioja. This pan-regional expression of Rioja’s three principal grape varieties is conceived as a lively, easy-drinking introduction to the range. Most entry-level wines from this region are based on Tempranillo (a variety easier and more profitable to grow), yet here Garnacha represents 65% of the blend. This Garnacha hails from very old vines in the sandy, river-stone terroirs of El Agudo and Al Casillón at Alfaro (Rioja Oriental). The Tempranillo is drawn from a selection of mature vines in Ábalos (high-county Rioja Alta), and some Ábalos Graciano adds freshness and finesse.

The wine ferments in a combination of concrete and steel tank, then ages for six months in concrete and 5,000-litre oak vats. These days, Tom includes a measure of semi-carbonic maceration for extra buoyancy. Opening with perfumes of dusky berries and well-judged spice, this is a wonderfully aromatic, restaurant-friendly wine. It’s a wine that impresses with its precision rather than power. Even so, the warmer year gives an open, juicy wine and a great deal of drinking pleasure: spice, vibrancy and velvety flow flecked with notes of espresso, dried flowers and wild woody herbiness to go with its smoky blackberry fruit. If you’re looking for a bright, succulent grower Rioja, few will deliver better value than this.

Made from pinot noir grown in the Geelong, Ballarat and Henty regions of Victoria.

You have to admire the complexity on offer here. It’s cohesive but it’s all happening. It tastes of chicory, twigs, orange peel, black cherries and foresty, mint-like notes, the finish and the tannin then infused with peppercorns and more. You get more than your money’s worth. Fruit is 60/35/5% Ballarat/Geelong/Henty. Matured in French barriques and puncheons (10% new). Medium crimson red, this is an excellent introduction to Provenance's range of 2022 pinots. About 50% whole bunches and 50% new French barriques. Bright crimson. A little more complex than the also very good 2022, which is on release too. Red fruits and rose petals together with a touch of reduction, which adds to the wine, giving it sapidity. Savoury and structured and with lots of energy. Needs time and food. An excellent showing. Sourced from four single vineyards in Geelong, two in the Moorabool Valley (Hillside Haven & Springbank) and two from the Bellarine (Hat Rock & Suma Park)

Each parcel was treated the same; wild yeast fermented with around 50% whole bunches. The wine was then matured for 10 months in 35% new French oak barriques. Malolactic conversion finished in spring with only minimal sulfur additions.

This is a Pinot that attracts first with its aroma of mushroom, and earth, enticing with some exotic dark cherry, wet leaves and a hint of jasmine. Following the scent, there is the anticipation of taste, and if you have chosen well, expect some flavours of dark cherry with undercurrents of earth and spice. Texture-wise, this Pinot has a smooth and silky mouthfeel. Flavour, body, and finish built to drink on release or age.

It’s a new plot of vineyard (on the estate) and this is the first year where there was enough crop to make/release a wine. It was fermented wild in old oak and then matured in a (not new) 1000l foudre.

Time in old oak was important here because it’s added texture to what is, at heart, a structural white wine. It’s a wine of skin and bones, stones and spices, its dryness a key part of its appeal. We’re almost into brine territory here, or stones sitting in a saline solution, perhaps. It knows what it wants, and it wants for food. This is a good, interesting wine, worth buying and drinking, and future releases will be worth following. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front

SPECIAL VALUE. A four-vineyard, six-clone blend; 20% wholes bunches, 15% new oak. A bright crimson red. A lifted bouquet redolent of summer red fruits, poached rhubarb, rose bush and white pepper. The energetic palate is light to medium bodied with the wine's fine-grained tannins and bright acidity making for a delicious and refreshing mouthful. Gosh this is an attractive wine. So many violets and indeed so redolent generally of a garden in bloom. Blue and red berried fruit flavours come melted with potpourri, sweet spice, leaf matter and twigs. Fruit and florals are the drivers but then the extras are tucked within. Mint and blood orange characters are here too, along with a decent crack of tannin. This is obviously meant to be consumed in its youth but even so, a quick double-decant does it a world of good. Sauvignon Blanc of the Year. Score awarded by the Halliday tasting team at the annual Awards judging. SW writes: Fermented in stainless steel tank (52%) and older oak (48%). Aged on full lees with no battonage. Pineapple, guava, perfectly ripe mango skin and lilikoi. Driving and elegant natural acidity and a wash of juicy tropical fruit with hints of glacé ginger and nutmeg spice. A fuzz of nettle texture and the wine finishes quite full bodied. This must be one of Australia’s top sauvignon blanc wines. And the value is pretty epic.

It’s got exceptional energy and persistence, a major feature is the tension in the wine, the torque of powdery pucker and the core of briny minerality. Around this, preserved lemon, a faint ginger lift, almond, attractive parmesan cheese characters, salt bush and gentle white pepper. It’s a compact and yet flavoursome white, refreshing as it is interesting and intellectual for the fanciers of fine sauvignon blanc. Cellar some too. MIKE BENNIE, Wine Front

Delamere Vineyards were planted in 1982 in the Pipers River region in northeast Tasmania making it one of the oldest plantings not only in the region but in Tasmania. They have 6.5ha under vine and its age makes it a rare resource in Tasmania. The ironstone rich soils are perfectly suited to the cultivars of pinot noir and chardonnay, and was established in the traditional French design used in Burgundy and Champagne.

The low yield per vine and the reflective heat from the ground produces wines with superior depth of flavour and ripe well-developed tannins. Vine age and subsequent natural balance are key factors in the consistent production of wines with great structure and harmony.
