de Villaine Mercurey Rouge Les Montots 2022A little iron in the soil here. North-east of the appellation, near Clos Myglands and La Framboisière. Plain south-facing, the soil a little red from the iron.
Ooh - now that's a beauty - a more sophisticated width of complex and attractive flavour. In the mouth - fresh and energetic - really complex - a little more blocky from the tannin today - this will also benefit from your patience but the finishing flavour, working its way through the tannin is completely delicious. Really a personality here. Very good but with much potential to improve. BILL NANSONCertified biodynamic. Light to mid crimson. Smells of little wild cherries, open and expressive. A notably more floral-suffused nose features distinctly earthy and ripe aromas of various dark berries, especially cherry, along with hints of kirsch and the sauvage. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the beautifully textured, if not particularly dense, medium-bodied flavors that exhibit moderate warmth and rusticity. This firmly structured effort is borderline old school in style though with that said, it offers excellent potential for a villages-level wine. DuMol Wester Reach Chardonnay Russian River Valley 2022A bright yellow color, the 2022 Chardonnay Wester Reach is a textbook example of this vintage, with a lot of elegance and a wide drinking window. From the Russian River Valley and aged in 25% new oak barrels for 11 months, it takes on more glycerol richness and a rounded profile. A great wine out of the gate, it captures the sunny feel of the region, but it's light on its feet and closes with a great finish. Domaine Rapet Beaune 1er Les Greves 2021From 50+ year old vines in the climat Sur les Grèves, this is one of the top-tier vineyards of Beaune admired for its power, structure and age ability thanks to the steep slope and reddish soils infused with iron oxide.
A riper if less refined and airy nose speaks of red and dark currant aromas that are laced with newly turned earth, exotic tea and an interesting hint of orange peel. There is better volume to the medium-bodied flavors that display good power and mid-palate density before culminating in a youthfully austere, firm and nicely balanced finale. This is consistently one of the domaine's better wines and so it is again in 2021. OUTSTANDING, BURGHOUND…. The nose is very pleasing, all in red fruit with a little white pepper, whereas the other cuvees have all been more floral. Fantastic on the palate with a core of youthful energy, baking spices and dark berry fruit flavours, firm tannins and plenty of acidity. The heartbeat of pinosity is strong, holding my attention. Spice, dried roses, a pleasing earthy bass, bright cherry and cranberry fruit. It's medium-bodied, firm and bright, with a distinct 'mineral' crunch and freshness, spicy too, earth and floral notes mingling to great effect. Almost that sort of bloody character you get in Pommard (apologies for the reference, in a way), and a long crisp finish that offers a pleasant amount of orange peel bitterness. Beautiful wine... Once again there is very good volume and excellent vibrancy to the sleek and delicious medium weight flavors that display good balance on the sappy and dusty finish. This has enough development potential to reward up to a decade of cellaring. BURGHOUND

Dry River Pinot Noir 2022The 2022 Pinot Noir leads with coffee grounds, black cherry, satsuma plum skin, Szechuan peppercorn, pink peppercorns, a hint of raspberry leaf tea and graphite. The wine smells savory while delivering all of these things. In the mouth, it is fine-boned but persistent and behaves in a gentle, splayed sort of manner through the finish. It's a very pretty wine, one that is quiet now, but I feel it will age slowly and elegantly in the cellar. This is a wine to drink now and to perhaps misunderstand in doing so. Or it's a wine to be patient with and reap the benefits after five or so years and beyond. Taste of Tassie 2021 Super Six Pack
Tasmania has become such a hot-bed of awesome talent and great wine. As one of Australia's coolest wine growing regions pinot noir and chardonnay have excelled and sparkling wine still proves to be one of its crown jewels. These have been mainstays of the Apple Isle for some time and there looks this to be no stopping the tide of incredible examples of each making their way across the Tasman.
Fast-forward a generation and we are really starting to see what the verdant land can really turn out. In our mind some of the best Euro-styled rieslings are being produced there while the marginal climates and savvy wine-making are turning out some stellar textural pinot gris.
While pinot noir may reign supreme it is other reds like shiraz, that may, in time, prove to be something even more special. Time will tell and while it does we will happily sip our way through all that Tasmania's has to offer.

Pierre Usseglio Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul 2020The 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul is 100% old-vine Grenache, sourced from three different lieux-dits: Les Serres (galets), La Crau (clay) and La Guigasse (sand). This preliminary blend came across as rather polite and restrained, with attractive raspberry shadings, silky tannins and a more elegant style than exhibited by past vintages. The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée De Mon Aïeul is also all Grenache but was raised all in demi-muids (I believe all used). Its more ruby/plum color is followed by an incredible bouquet of mulled red and black fruits, sweet Provençal herbs, spice box, and graphite. It's slightly broader and more expansive than the Deux Freres and has a sexy, full-bodied mouthfeel, ripe, polished tannins, and a great finish. This reminds me a little of the 2006, and while it's already brilliant, I have no doubt it will evolve for 15-20 years in cold cellars. JEB DUNNUCK

An enticing fragrance of fresh dark cherries and dried herbs, plum and sweet wood with a light smoke touch. There’s a gentle perfume and floral frame. On the palate firm touch with a core of ripe dark berried fruits for contrast. There’s some subtle power with tannins and acidity framing the wine nicely and a core of fruit flavours that reflect the bouquet. Firm and dry, lengthy and well made, I feel this wine needs some cellar time to complete its harmony. Best drinking from 2025 through 2032+.
