Medium acidity is balanced by pleasant fleshiness, finishing very clean with a hint of minerality.For complexity, completeness, and balance, we achieve a diversity of ripeness by using the traditional method of harvesting the fruit a number of different times during the ripening period. The earlier harvests contribute acidity and minerality, and the later harvests contribute flesh and richness. We whole-cluster press all of the grapes, then ferment and age the wine in seasoned French oak barrels, with only native yeast. No battonage (lees stirring) or racking. Boris Champy Hautes Cotes de Beaune Blanc Montagne 382 2022From the Montagne de Cras, plot in Nantoux, the soils here is very varied, stony, but also full of clay. The 4-hectare plot is made up of 3 hectares of vines and 1 hectare of natural areas of great biodiversity: scree slopes, hedges, orchards, limestone grasslands with numerous orchids and even a few corm trees, which are extremely rare these days.
In the winery, the fruit is whole bunch pressed into part barrel (25% new) and part small stainless barrels and left to sit on lees for up to 12 months.
Rich and generous citrus fruits, honey and subtle floral notes, rounded out by a nice integration of oak and balanced acidity.

Tapanappa 1.5m Tiers Chardonnay 2024The close spaced planting of this part of the Tiers vineyard imparts a slightly different flavour and textural feel to the Chardonnays from the old Tiers plantings. Intense aromas of tropical fruits, brioche and spices. The palate is ripe and textured although the chalky acid and light citrus edge hold the definition and line through to the long finish. Wow! This is something. I know many prefer the Tiers Chardonnay, but for the last two years I have leaned towards this 1.5m and I don't apologise for it. Elegance and purity seep through this wine's veins and I want it all.
Brian Croser describes 2024 as a model vintage and this release is tight and laser-like focused on opening. Concentrated stonefruit lands all the praise early on - the flavour intensity compared to the Tiers Chardonnay is telling and is due to a combination of close-planted vines and different clones. Grapefruit, slivers of almonds and fine drops of lemon juice draw out to a long finish. Baked cheesecake, vanilla pod, a touch of oyster shell and hints of brioche continue to peel back veneers of interest that seem to be brushed on ever so delicately. The precision is elite and the concentration supreme yet its presence is graceful and charming. Give it time to evolve and you'll be rewarded further more. Brilliant stuff. Tapanappa 1.5m Tiers Chardonnay 2023From a section of the Tiers vineyard close planted in 2003 using the Bernard clones 76 and 95. This is same same, but different to the old vine Tiers, a little fleshier, but it’s the texture that’s the main point of difference.
White stonefruit, pear, quite spicy and slightly dusty/peppery, honey and lime. The texture is a highlight, chalky and ‘mineral’, ripe lime and honey, white peach, spicy cinnamon oak, almond meal, with plenty of citrus bite on a finish of excellent length. Marvellous wine. To quote winemaker, Brian Croser, the ’23 Chardonnays are far from “overt.” I find that re-assuring, the vintage speaks and it’s beautifully fine with purity of fruit and acidity layered naturally, succinctly, making 1.5m poised for further ageing. Meyer lemon, lemon drop, nectarine, peach aromas with a hint of cashew – in other words an alluring introduction. Still incredibly youthful, offers a core of perfectly pitched citrus and stone fruits in balance and concentrated. The 2022 Home Vineyard Pinot Noir is possessed of a most exciting display of red fruits and ductile tannin in concert. The tannins have a much closer, more densely packed feeling than the unfurling/spooling Olearia. There’s pomegranate, red and black cherry, licorice, star anise and even a hint of cumin seed. It's a wonderful wine that I know from experience benefits from a decant, which allows the fruit to stretch its legs, so to speak. Supple, throaty and full but not big. The cooler season seems to suit Cri de Coeur as of all the pinots, this has the deepest colour – a vibrant garnet, and has amalgamated the best at this early stage. Chatto Intrigue Pinot Noir 2023Intrigue. What a good name for a Pinot Noir. Anyway, Jim Chatto is a very good fellow, and very giving of his outstanding knowledge of wine, and he’d know so much more than me, generally, maybe aside Piedmont.
This has a lot more flavour and pop than the Isle, lots of cherry and almond, and spicy things, and quite some richness of fruit. I like the sooty tannin, and the cherry-almond laced flavour that it offers, there’s cherry pip and some ‘mineral’ acidity to it, blonde tobacco too, and it’s a wine that presents with some lush flavour, with a gentle sappiness to close. Here be flavour and good Pinot things, and I really like this wine. It has some oomph and carriage that the Isle maybe lacks. I like this wine for its juiciness and flavour. Xanadu Stevens Road Chardonnay 2022It has all the hallmarks of the site – Block 2, off Stevens Road, obviously, all Gingin clone, whole-bunch pressed to French oak, wild fermentation. And while there’s lees stirring throughout its nine months in barrel, there’s no mlf. It’s still a little frisky from youth as the acidity holds sway, yet in-between pink grapefruit and lime juice, zest and pith, too. Hurley Hommage Pinot Noir 2022Homage faces north-east, is the smallest of the vineyards, was planted from cuttings taken from Main Ridge Estate, and – important on the Peninsula – is the most sheltered of the vineyards.
This release is better than excellent. It’s elegant and fine-boned but it has genuine power, most of the latter formed, assembled and employed through the back half of the palate and out through the finish. It’s a Pinot Noir for lovers of Pinot Noir. It’s modestly sweet-sour but it’s silken and cohesive, its black cherry, meat, toast and floral elements singing as one.
