    Out of all the brilliant Rizzi range of Barbaresco, I have a bit of a soft spot for the Nervo bottling. It doesn't carry the gravitas of their Pajore plot but I love the understatement in the wine with its lilting and delicate aromatics and  fine, detailed palate. Pure, with a lovely austerity on the back end.

    In 2020, it strikes me as just a touch more open so the red fruits and bruised strawberry jump up a little more than usual, and the dusting of spice, red petals, dried mint and cut hay aromatics are beautifully accessible. So much so, it's hard to draw yourself away to actually drink the thing. But, when you do the just-right-ripeness gives you fruit that ranges from raspberry to cranberry all draped in complexing brown spice. The structure is there but like all Nervos, it's fine and ever so long giving the balancing austerity of powdery tanins to the effusiveness of the fruit. I love it. MICHAEL MCNAMARA, PWS

    The 2022 Savigny-lès-Beaune Aux Fourneaux is pretty and charming, offering up notes of raspberries, plums, spices and orange zest. Medium-bodied, supple and fine-boned, it won't require much cellaring. WILLIAM KELLEY

    A notably earthier nose combines notes of red currant, dark pinot and a whiff of the sauvage. There is markedly better volume to the delicious and more complex medium-bodied flavors that conclude in a moderately rustic and more structured finale.     Deep crimson, quite deep color. The nose is layered with berry fruit, raspberry, wild strawberry, cassis and briary fruit. There is lovely perfume lift and a purity of fruit, a good lick of new oak just appears, it is a super fresh and delineated wine. The palate is beautifully balanced and finely structured with spice, red berry loads of silky tannins and a long driven finish. The old vines providing depth and persistence.     An enticing nose of maraschino cherries and freshly turned earth awaken the senses from the get-go. The palate is awash with sweet spices, cherries and forest floor flavours.  Chewy tannins frame the bright and inner-lit core, creating a savoury tail on the finish.     There's a lightness and nervy spine to the core of maraschino cherries and licorice - a feature of the sandy soils perhaps.  At the moment it feels a little tense, there's a swell of flavours at the fore, but it needs time. Tobacco and balsamic earthy notes balance the berries and dry spices. This is finely tuned and packed with excitement, but tuck it away and it will reward with a few years under its belt.     Sandro Fay Valtellina Riserva Superiore 'Carteria' 2019

    Carteria is a single vineyard that sits at around 550 metres in the western part of the municipality of Teglio. At this higher level the vineyards sit in a cooler pocket and the vines produce fruit and grape juice that is tighter and nervier and showing more primary rock mineral character. Winemaking involves fermentation in stainless steel and aging for 12 months in 30hl and 500ltr old oak barrels and then a further aging in bottle of 24 months. Carteria has been made as a Riserva (min 3 years of aging) since 2013.

    The wine is intensely concentrated with floral hints of rose and cool spice with a fruit profile that shows hints of darker fruits in addition to red. Tannins are finer and more elegant than you would expect from one of the warmer years on record. Overall, the wine is powerful, savoury and earthy with many years ahead of it to unfurl.

    Clouet's rose epitomises elegance and focus, while flamboyantly celebrating the generous red cherry, strawberry, watermelon and pink pepper fruit of Bouzy.  It encapsulates that wonderful talent of pinot noir to build and rise on the finish, all the while retaining graceful precision as delicate as rose petal perfume.  Structure is fine and elegant, driven both by chalk minerality of the village and a very finely executed tannin presence.  It finishes with great length and poise of exquisite red cherry fruit.  A pristine and enticingly priced rose.     The NV Brut Rosé No 3 Grand Cru is a pure Bouzy Pinot Noir that gets its beautiful intense onion-skin color from the addition of 8% red wine. The nose is rich and complex but at the same time pure and refined, with a nice chalky layer and vinous fruit intensity. Round and rich but fresh and vital on the pure and elegant palate, this is a full-bodied, pretty intense and persistent rosé to be served with main courses.     Wow, what a lovely aroma of raspberry and dark cherry fruit laid over a faintly stoney backbeat and gorgeous blue florals of violets. The palate is full and ripe but nuanced and full of energy. Intensity of flavour without heft. I love the limestone drying quality in this wine and the mouth aromas that mark it as a Volnay through and through.     Ripe aromas of both red and dark berry fruit enjoy pretty floral top notes. There is again very good energy to the solidly dense and voluminous flavors that are at once generous yet grippy and rustic on the firm finish. While better balanced than the St. Romain, I suspect that this will always have a bit of a tannic edge to it. BURGHOUND

    Crimson color. There is more new oak here to be seen of first impressions that elevate the overall complexity and class of the aromas, it is amply carried by the depth of fruit, wild strawberry, black cherry, blackberry and plum with a brooding background. The palate is suitably concentrated with ample extract and structure that has layers of fruit and texture. Very classy effort. The finish long and fragrant. Drink 2027-2040. TOM CARSON

    A spicier expression on the nose of nutmeg, blood plums and violets - this exudes its 2022 supreme fruit expression. With air, notes of mulch and rose petals emerge.  There's a lovely synergy between fruit and structure,  an undertow of power and sinewy muscle carries the fruit along.  Subtle oak tannins and a minerally thread cocoon the core, setting it up for a very bright future.     The 2019 Barolo San Giovanni is the more powerful of the estate's two Barolos. It offers up scents of mocha, spice, dark cherry, plum and leather. There's a bit more new oak too, which adds intensity as well as volume.     Extremely perfumed with a pretty ripeness and clarity, offering plums and al-dente strawberries. Some cantaloupe, too. It's medium- to full-bodied with juicy fruit that's lovely and open. You want to drink it now. And do. Crunchy yet velvety and caressing in the mouth-feel from the lovely, open tannins. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification.     The 2020 Rippon Mature Vine Pinot Noir is restrained on the nose, with an earthy (i.e., of the earth, gray rocks, etc.) countenance that I find highly engaging. In the mouth, the fruit comes alive with cherry and cranberry, pomegranate pearls, graphite and pencil lead, layers of black tea, coal dust and brine. This is dark without being heavy or dense, and it’s very fine. The silty tannins linger through the finish and seem to settle on the palate, which is pleasurable.     The 2020 Barolo San Giovanni is fabulous. In fact, the 2020 is one of the best editions I can remember tasting. Dark cherry, cedar, new leather, incense, mocha and dried herbs all open in the glass. The 2020 is rich and deep, but with greater finesse than in the past. Generous and youthful with a layer of long, polished tannins. Perhaps the most approachable of their 2018 Barolos, but also has potential to age. WALTER SPELLER

    The 2018 Barolo Castelletto is a powerful, deep wine that is not ready to show all its cards yet. Then again, this is Monforte Barolo we are talking about.     The 2021 Pinot Noir is vibrant on the nose and totally precise and focused. The acid spools right from the front of the palate and has a mobile, agile way about it. The season may have had it's challenges, but the wine is effortless, natural and shapely. It's great.     Love this wine. Has the early supple appeal of Savigny but it's not simple. Red fruits, brown spice and lingering florals plus a dusting of background wood characterise the nose. The palate is immediately red fruited and eveloping with a supple texture that again has some drying limestone dusty quality.     The big one, made from 39 year-old Abel clone vines. Doesn't sound like much but in New Zealand terms this spans the country's development as a serious, wine-producing nation. Very aromatic, but into the spectrum of dried herbs, chamomile, and cedar box. An impressive, very plush, palate - big, with an incredible "structure" on the finish: it's expansive and velvety but it ends, running on with the acid and the fine, fine tannin. An umami, lush, structured, beautiful wine. (98) OLLY STYLES

    The 2020 Pinot Noir reminds me of walking into a cathedral - that quiet, cool hush that falls as you walk through its doors. This is harmonious, supple, unshowy and unforced. Hailing from old vines and delicately textured despite the abundance of fruit concentration. Refined tannins with the finest of gravelly textures, akin to licking a stone.
