Harvest Moon Pinot Grigio 2023Callie has grown up with wine in the blood. It was family holidays to Chianti in Italy, and tasting’s at Louis Roederer in France that sparked a serious passion in Callie from a very young age. Having studied psychology and criminology at Melbourne University, and qualifying as a chef it was the lure of wine and more so vineyards that she just couldn’t resist. She’s now studying wine making at Charles Sturt University, and has already worked at some A-list wineries, including De Bortoli in the Yarra Valley, Littorai Wines in California and Fattoria Zerbina in Romagna.
This is a smashing combo of classic Alsace and northern Italian style grigio. Bursting with Apple, pear, some honeysuckle spice, and a hint minerally goodness too that you don't often find at this level. It's the lighter side of mid-wright packed with crispy fruit and plenty of it the focus to a fine, citrus-driven fresh with lots of crunch and energy. The quintessential drink don't think wine.

Domaine de Chatillon Jacquere 2020We were a bit chuffed to get this wine when trying it recently particularly given that you don't see a lot of jacquere wines out of Savoie at the price. The chateau is based in the Chatillon castle, a Roman watch tower built 70AD to signal the regiments along the Rhone River. It's pretty striking stuff in the hills there and the high-altitude vineyards lend a lovely racy edge to the wines.
Light bodied and crisp with a clean, steely minerality and light floral blossom accents on top of waxy citrus and green apple fruit. On the palate it races through cutting with mandarin and lemon peel apple/pear flavours and plenty of energetic acidity that drives a clean, mineral finish spiked with qartz and white pepper. Great stuff!

A Portuguese transplant, arinto is looking like it will settle into McLaren Vale with some ease. This, a case in point. Free run, a little of the light pressings, and wild fermented in steel. Pear and dried apple lashed with brine, savoury-spiked with parsley seed and fennel frond, a water-splashed-concrete mineral note accenting. Alexakis Wines Vidano 2023The grapes are cold-soaked for up to 10 hours to release all their aromas. The free-run juice is fermented in stainless steel tanks with selected cultured yeast at low temperatures. Following fermentation, the wine is kept on the fine lees for three months. Very little filtration and fining are employed.
On the nose, elegant peachy and floral aromas with a refreshing grassy note. On the palate, the well-judged alcohol adds to the overall richness of the peach and apricot flavours. Medium-full bodied with a satiny texture and a long fruity finish.

Made by sommelier-come-Italian wine rep-come Italian wine tragic, James Scaresbrook, his renditions of Italian varietals are some of the most convincing you will find. That's not to say I like them because they're mimicking the Italians. Nup, not at all, and in fact the fruit spectrum generally shows it's antipodean origin. Through intelligent winemaking techniques (often observed in his own travel in Italy) he brings texture and aromatic complexity to these varieties. It's a recognition of how these varieties work with food and transports them from dry white and red wines to something with altogether more interest.A recent appointment trying through his range only highlighted what good things James is doing. His wines are all on point with thougtful winemaking inspired their homes in Italy but not dogmatically so. Quealy Turbul Moscato Giallo 2022Given this producer’s love of Italian white varieties, it was only a matter of time before this dry moscato giallo made it as a single varietal. Previously blended into Lina Lool and the zero sulphur/zero sugar Secco Splendido. This inaugural release is so good. A rose gold, copper-orange hue with lovely clarity and the aromas – just heady. Musk, Turkish delight, rosewater, lemon verbena, lychees and turmeric. It is dry and fresh, with stretchy phenolics adding some grip and give, yet there’s a mouth-watering lemon salt character and the acidity keeps this seemingly light on its feet. This wine sits in a range the Blancks call "Les Classiques". These are easy, accessible wines made from the traditional Alsatian grape varieties. They are fruit-driven, aromatic, dry wines that give the best of themselves within the first five to seven years, if you wish to retain their primary fruit-driven personality. The screw cap closure enhances this profile and helps the wines keep both freshness and liveliness far longer. They generally come from light soils with sand and gravel as well as sandstone or clay.
