Prinz Doosberg GG Riesling Trocken 2019From a south facing vineyard site near the Rhine river at 100 to 120 m altitude. The soils are mainly loess and loam with some gravel and a little bit of quarzite in the subsoil.
This is the lowest lying GG, leading with a composed nose of stonefruits spiked with ginger and earthy tones. With a few swirls it ramps up in intensity, vanilla and peach flavours emerge alongside delicate herbal delights. There's a lovely play between exuberance and subtlety, it's a delightful tease. Rizzi Barbaresco Nervo DOCG 2020Out of all the brilliant Rizzi range of Barbaresco, I have a bit of a soft spot for the Nervo bottling. It doesn't carry the gravitas of their Pajore plot but I love the understatement in the wine with its lilting and delicate aromatics and fine, detailed palate. Pure, with a lovely austerity on the back end.
In 2020, it strikes me as just a touch more open so the red fruits and bruised strawberry jump up a little more than usual, and the dusting of spice, red petals, dried mint and cut hay aromatics are beautifully accessible. So much so, it's hard to draw yourself away to actually drink the thing. But, when you do the just-right-ripeness gives you fruit that ranges from raspberry to cranberry all draped in complexing brown spice. The structure is there but like all Nervos, it's fine and ever so long giving the balancing austerity of powdery tanins to the effusiveness of the fruit. I love it. MICHAEL MCNAMARA, PWS

Sandro Fay Valtellina Riserva Superiore 'Carteria' 2019Carteria is a single vineyard that sits at around 550 metres in the western part of the municipality of Teglio. At this higher level the vineyards sit in a cooler pocket and the vines produce fruit and grape juice that is tighter and nervier and showing more primary rock mineral character. Winemaking involves fermentation in stainless steel and aging for 12 months in 30hl and 500ltr old oak barrels and then a further aging in bottle of 24 months. Carteria has been made as a Riserva (min 3 years of aging) since 2013.
The wine is intensely concentrated with floral hints of rose and cool spice with a fruit profile that shows hints of darker fruits in addition to red. Tannins are finer and more elegant than you would expect from one of the warmer years on record. Overall, the wine is powerful, savoury and earthy with many years ahead of it to unfurl.

The 2019 Barolo Gattera is a powerful, broad wine. Even in the new style favored by Veglio today, the Gattera shows its natural breath along with a decidedly dark expression of La Morra. Sweet black cherry, plum, spice, new leather, licorice and mocha all meld together effortlessly. The Gattera offers lovely upfront appeal married to the classicism of the year. Mauro Veglio Barolo Castelletto 2020The 2020 Barolo Castelletto is one of the most closed wines in this range from Veglio. Then again, we are in Monforte. Veins of saline-infused dark fruit, crushed rocks, herbs, mint and coffee open with a bit of coaxing. Nervy, focused tannins wrap it all together in style.
