Moondarra Fin Pinot Noir 2022The Moondarra vineyard was established in the Gippsland Mountain Rivers District by the Prentice family in 1991 and has always focused on growing small volumes of absolutely super quality fruit. Moondarra Pinot Noir is typically both elegant and powerful.
Fin is an early realse declassified version of the Studebaker from young vines planted in 2007 to a mixture of self grown seedlings, clones 115, 777, Abel and Calera. Guy Acard inspired, involving pre-ferment cold soak, vigorous pigeage and eleveage in second use oak. The wine is bottled unfiltered to preserve silkiness. Full bodied yet delicate it has Neil's trademark wildness.
Surprsing on all the good ways with a lithe rose petal and floral lilt that makes you think you are getting a light and delicate pinot but that proceeds to rush with you lashing of red rspaberry and morello cherry fruit in a plush and sweet package this light on its feet, vibrant and packed full of flavour.2022Pinot noirAustralia396$30.00 As low as $27.00 -
Nick Spencer Gundagai Light Dry Red Blend 2021
No, this is not just another "Light Dry Red" playing to the recent fads but a serious nod to the 'Burgundies' of the 50's 60's and 70's which Nick Spencer is paying homage to. These were classic light-bodied Shiraz and Shiraz/ Pinot blends that emerged from the Hunter and are highly sort after now. They are back in fashion and tasting this it's not hard to understand why.
The style can be a little hit or miss and getting that combo of pinot and shiraz just right is critical, which Nick has done a brilliant job of here. A touch of sour cherry, cranberry and strawberries that plays off broodier black currant and blackberry fruit swirling around in the background. It's served on a palate that is crunchy and vibrant with lovely fine structure and soft melting tannins. Great poise between the fruit and other elements and while this is wonderfully easy to enjoy there is a plenty going on here that belies the seriousness of the wine.
While its ready to go now and easy to love if you put a couple of bottles away for just a couple of years or so I think you would be a very happy camper!

Express Winemakers Syrah 2021
Syrah from two vineyards farmed organically by Ryan the winemaker himself.
Powdery dry with amaro laced dark berry fruit flavours, botanicals, blood orange, sour cherry and refreshing, minerally acidity. Fine, silty tannins shape things nicely, decent length, liveliness and good depth. Very good. MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Front

Plenty of flavour of red and blue fruits, bay leaf, a dusting of spice. Medium-bodied, quite fleshy, some earthy/sooty tannin sweeps through it, with a soft and supple finish of blue fruits and spice. Length is moderate, but OK. Good wine. Easy to like. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

Hoddles Creek Estate Pinot Noir 2024Red fruit, cherry, a little earthy, with some cinnamon oak showing, and sarsaparilla. It’s a more fruity and bouncy expression of Hoddles Pinot, some grainy chew to tannin, a bit of sap and orange rind, something of a ferrous edge, with a stiff tannic finish of good length. Needs a bit of time to come around. It’s maybe a little more robust and fruity than is usual for this wine, though it’s still good. (92+) GARY WALSH2024Pinot noirAustralia506$30.00 As low as $27.00

Complex shiraz with herb, meat, woodsmoke and mint characters rippling through cherry and plum fruit flavours. It's cool and composed but flavoursome, too, with clove notes running out ahead of it all and excellent length to the finish. Xavier Papa Pinot Noir 2024
Xavier Goodridge is part of the new wave of progressive, low-intervention winemakers in Australia, known for crafting pure, vibrant, and honest wines. Based in Victoria, Xavier previously worked alongside Patrick Sullivan, a leading figure in the modern Australian wine movement and one of Gippsland's burgeoning wine scene's ambassador. Xavier has developed a similarly thoughtful and sustainable approach to farming and winemaking and you can see that in the purity and expressive nature of all his wines.
Xavier's philosophy is built around organic and biodynamic viticulture, focusing on minimal inputs in both vineyard and winery. He believes that great wine is made in the vineyard, not manipulated in the cellar. The result? Wines that are alive, expressive, and transparent to place. The Pa Pa Pinot Noir is one of Xavier's signature wines and a brilliant reflection of his hands-off, terroir-driven style from Gippsland. The fruit is Handpicked , fermented naturally with indigenous yeasts and partial whole bunch fermentation to bring perfume and spice. This has wonderful aromatic intensity flowing from the glass with heady perfume and a wonderful floral note. It's juicy, showing off a lively core of red cherries, cranberries, and wild strawberries, with hints of savoury spice, dried herbs, and a subtle earthiness underneath. It's on the light side of medium-bodied, incredibly bright and energetic, but with enough depth to keep it interesting. The tannins are soft and silky, and the finish is lifted and refreshing. This is a seriously drinkable Pinot Noir - joyful, pure, and super expressive.

Aphelion Welkin Grenache 2023
Sourced from a range of Vale sites, this is at the ‘vin de soif’ end of the Aphelion grenache roster. Grenache in this zone can be juicy and jubey, but not this. It’s a thread that runs through the Welkin range, with fruitful pleasure in a mid-weight zone tempered by savoury structure. Macerated strawberries and tart raspberries, redcurrant, red licorice, rhubarb and orange, pink peppercorn and a seasoning of dusty spice. It’s bright and lithe, savoury and zippy – a fine all-rounder at table that can take a gentle chill. MARCUS ELLIS, Halliday Wine Companion
Seems like my brilliant treatise on whelks fell on deaf ears. Oh well, sometimes it feels like I’m feeding strawberries to pigs here. And speaking of strawberries…Poached strawberry, raspberry, lemon thyme and rosemary perfume, hazelnut, candied orange peel and mint. Juicy, strawberry, kind of sweet and succulent, but also has a little savoury stony stuff, nutty things and solid length too, and gee it’s a fun little wine. Nice. Kind of like a big rosato in a way. Moorooduc Estate Devil Bend Creek Pinot Noir 2024
I know we have said it before but honestly, how do the McIntyres do this wine for this kind of money? It always impresses and considering this is all hand-harvested, wild yeast fermented, and spends time in top-notch French oak you just have to smile with a glass in front of you.
There is always a generosity here and 2024 has embraced that vibe but added a little sappy detail to elevate the stakes a little more.. A touch of wild cherry and raspberry fruit, that amaro and citrus twang you often see and a sprinkle of sweet spice and whole black pepper that entices you in. It's plump through the middle with succulent fruit that zips along a fine line of tannins that bind all the fruit together beautifully.
It's soft and supple with plenty of Joie-de-vie while delivering a serious edge that most producers in the Mornigton must be pretty jealous about.2024Pinot noirAustralia441$31.00 As low as $27.90 -
The Pass Marlborough Pinot Noir 2022The name 'The Pass' tells a great story. It's named after the highway linking Marlborough's key wine regions - the Awatere and Wairau Valleys. Once just a rough bridle track cutting through brown mountains, green forests, and rows of vineyards, today it's still one of the most scenic drives in New Zealand and while Marlborough is more famous for its white it produces some cracking pinot that is plush, generous and rammed with flavour.
Crafted by Stu Marfell and the Foley Wines team the secret to the it's character lies in the blend of two Marlborough sub-regions which Stu Marfell knows well - he grew up not far from the vineyards that supply fruit for The Pass.
Redcurrant, raspberry, and cherry flavours to the fore, wrapped in a gentle layer of sweet spice and ground pepper. This is a wine of pillowy red fruit, elegance, its fine, silky tannins carry the plush fruit to a long and lush close. Great stuff capturing all the generosity of pinot from Marlborough while balancing freshness and energy too.

Spinifex Papillon 2023
Pete Schell's Papillon and I have had a thing going for a while. If I spy it on a wine list it's often what I'll go for as it consistently delivers a great drinking experience and matches a range of foods. This year it's 66/31/3% grenache/cinsault/counoise 3%. Spacious, sapid and energetic, it's all raspberries and cranberries daubed with exotic spice, rose petals, sour cherry, dried herbs and stone. That whoosh of sour red plum at the end gets me every time. So good! (95) DAVE BROOKS, thewinecompanion
This is 66% grenache, 31% cinsault and 3% counoise. Always the shapeshifter is Papillon.
Cool and fresh. Lively and bright. A chillable, slurpy, crunchy red emerges. Red cherry, raspberry, cranberry, alpine herbs, some menthol-like lift, aniseed and pepper, a touch of white chocolate. Good energy here. Some real get up and go. Freshness implicit. Cool. MIKE BENNIE, The Wine FrontLight cherry red hue. Raspberry, blueberry and anise aromas. Bright on the palate: juicy raspberry fruits with hints of rosemary and dusty earth adding complexity. The freshness of the acidity makes for a deliciousness that really appeals, and tannins kick through at the back end to dry the finish. STUART KNOX, The Real Review

Exopto Bozeto de Exopto Rioja 2023
This wine has dropped the Bozeto styling and is now simply called Exopto. New name, same vibrant, great-value Rioja. This pan-regional expression of Rioja’s three principal grape varieties is conceived as a lively, easy-drinking introduction to the range. Most entry-level wines from this region are based on Tempranillo (a variety easier and more profitable to grow), yet here Garnacha represents 65% of the blend. This Garnacha hails from very old vines in the sandy, river-stone terroirs of El Agudo and Al Casillón at Alfaro (Rioja Oriental). The Tempranillo is drawn from a selection of mature vines in Ábalos (high-county Rioja Alta), and some Ábalos Graciano adds freshness and finesse.
The wine ferments in a combination of concrete and steel tank, then ages for six months in concrete and 5,000-litre oak vats. These days, Tom includes a measure of semi-carbonic maceration for extra buoyancy. Opening with perfumes of dusky berries and well-judged spice, this is a wonderfully aromatic, restaurant-friendly wine. It’s a wine that impresses with its precision rather than power. Even so, the warmer year gives an open, juicy wine and a great deal of drinking pleasure: spice, vibrancy and velvety flow flecked with notes of espresso, dried flowers and wild woody herbiness to go with its smoky blackberry fruit. If you’re looking for a bright, succulent grower Rioja, few will deliver better value than this.

Beyond the Pines “Viceroy” Syrah 2021
This is the 2nd release of the 'Viceroy' Syrah for young winemaker Matt Keoghan who has worked extensively locally and abroad to try and hone in his craft from places such as Hermitage, Barolo and ChateauNeuf Du Pape.
The vineyard from which these wines are made from are on the GI border of Mclarenvale (Clarendon) and Adelaide Hills from the Wind River Vineyard which is family owned and farmed. The soils are Buck Shot ironstones and quartz through Sandy loams on a light orange and red clay base. This leads to leaner alcohol wine and some slight reduction but almost pithy tannin and slurpee acidity.
The wines are more savoury than what is usually seen from the Adelaide Hills with great structural framing around a blue/black fruited palate. The lift from the hallmark whole bunch kiss, an almost mineral fresh finish, this wine is really letting the fruit speak rather than the winemaking, with elevage in neutral Hogs Heads and all Natural fermentation and minimal sulphur added prior to bottling.

Provenance Golden Plains Pinot Noir 2022
Made from pinot noir grown in the Geelong, Ballarat and Henty regions of Victoria.
You have to admire the complexity on offer here. It’s cohesive but it’s all happening. It tastes of chicory, twigs, orange peel, black cherries and foresty, mint-like notes, the finish and the tannin then infused with peppercorns and more. You get more than your money’s worth. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front
Fruit is 60/35/5% Ballarat/Geelong/Henty. Matured in French barriques and puncheons (10% new). Medium crimson red, this is an excellent introduction to Provenance's range of 2022 pinots. Early picked Syrah spread over three nally bins, foot stomped twice a day to extract maximum colour and tannin. Whilst we didn’t adopt the tradtional lagar approach, Motely Crue accompanied us on this stomping journey. Aged Brandy Spirit added at a mild baume of 3 arrested the ferment at 52gms residual. Must was immediately pressed to tank, settled and bottled shortly after with zero fining or filtration and no oak. Arfion Spring Pinot Noir 2023Originally from New Zealand, Dave Mackintosh established Arfion with his father Brian and brother Jimmy in 2011. Dave has been obsessed with making wine since '98 and likes to delve deep on a broad spectrum of styles. Sourcing grapes from highly skilled, sustainable growers from across the Yarra, they ensure site and variety are in harmony throughout the season with low impact winemaking at their heart. They do abide by one rule. All wines must deliver good times.
Well, that rule has not been broken here. What a belter of a pinot noir. It says 'Spring' pinot but this will be slurppable all summer long so don't you worry about that. This is all about straight up juicy fruit and absolutely gluggably styled pinot that is light on its feet, crunchy and bursting with fruit. Lashings of raspberry and red cherry with clove, white pepper and a melange of fresh ground sweet spice. It's slippery and so easy to drink and while it comes of feeling pretty and light it still packs plenty of punch. Absolutely delicious!

About 50% whole bunches and 50% new French barriques. Bright crimson. A little more complex than the also very good 2022, which is on release too. Sourced from four single vineyards in Geelong, two in the Moorabool Valley (Hillside Haven & Springbank) and two from the Bellarine (Hat Rock & Suma Park)
Each parcel was treated the same; wild yeast fermented with around 50% whole bunches. The wine was then matured for 10 months in 35% new French oak barriques. Malolactic conversion finished in spring with only minimal sulfur additions. This is a Pinot that attracts first with its aroma of mushroom, and earth, enticing with some exotic dark cherry, wet leaves and a hint of jasmine. Following the scent, there is the anticipation of taste, and if you have chosen well, expect some flavours of dark cherry with undercurrents of earth and spice. Texture-wise, this Pinot has a smooth and silky mouthfeel. Flavour, body, and finish built to drink on release or age.

Syrahmi Demi Heathcote Shiraz 2023
Demi is such a vital expression of Heathcote shiraz. It’s also an essential expression of value, from a small producer. There’s complexity here. There’s juicy fruit. There’s fistfuls of spice and yet there’s a general we-are-one cohesion. Blue, black and red summer berry flavours, an ironstone element, woodsy spices roasted in an iron pan and modest inputs from florals. It’s a better wine than its asking price would suggest. It’s firm, confident and flavoursome. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, the wine front
Red earth, black cherries and olive tapenade pronounce themselves. There's a charming rustic character to this wine - much like the person behind it. It's got grunt, spice and power however it's a very graceful medium-bodied red. Walsh & Sons Felix Shiraz 2021
Grown in the sandy, clay soils of our Osmington family vineyard. Planted in 1995 with rows running north to south on a slight northeast facing slope. The vineyard is certified biodynamic. We treat it like a veg patch, heavy compost in autumn and sheep snapping the odd wire as they browse in winter.
20% handpicked early April before machine harvesting 2-days later. The whole bunches added to vat, the machine component going on top, no crushing or destemming. Wild fermented on skins, until dry. Pressed to a mix of new & old French barrels. A single racking after the Spring equinox otherwise it sits on full lees until January, topping every two weeks. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation from Autumn to Spring giving a natural CO2 cover during maturation. The wine remains undisturbed with minimal sulphur added prior to bottling in February. High-quality, smaller corks provide a more drinkable style through bottle aging. The wine is unfined & unfiltered so may present some harmless deposits in the bottle.2021shirazAustralia504$37.00 As low as $33.30 -

The Story Wines Super G Red Blend 2022It's not heavy but it's so wild with spice and so generally captivating that it's hard to put it down. This is a cracker of a wine. Red and blue berried fruit flavours, black pepper notes, a mezcal aspect and flings of roasted nuts. It's ripe and robust, in a mid-weight way, but the real key here is that it's aflame with roasted spice/pepper notes.
