Dan Chaffey Hartwig comes from a line of winemaking brilliance. His family founded Seaview Wines in McLaren Vale and Mildara Wines. They have a cellar door in Tanunda which they share with eight others and also a local wine bar. There's nothing staunch or hands-off about them, they're proud of their turf and welcoming.  

Working with both Eden Valley and Barossan fruit, the Chaffey Bros hone in on single-site old vines, many which would have been ripped out had they not been willing to take the fruit. Herewe're sidestepping the usual suspects out of Barossa with this cracking blend and funky field blend of co-fermented riesling, gewürztraminer and kerner from the Fechner vineyard.

This is a relatively new concept for Madeira: a dry aperitif style wine. I like it. It sits in the glass with a very pale color and a slightly nutty nose. There is a rounded feel to the palate with notes of apple and some saltiness. WILL LYONS, The Wall Street Journal

Botanical herb, spring blossom and citrus aromas form the subtle nose. Taking up where the nose left off, the linear, medium-bodied palate features peach, lemon zest and bitter almond alongside bright acidity. WINE ENTHUSIAST

Petilia's story is woven into the very fabric of Greco di Tufo and this wine encapsulate brilliantly what these wines can be when this variety and place come together under the watchful eye of a producer of this calibre. Very cool wine. Almond oil and citrus pith on the nose slowly open to reveal orange blossom, green mandarin and saline notes. Some lovely phenolic grip add texture webbing the pristine fruits on the palate together nicely. It starts tangy and fresh with an array of citrus interspersed with rocky notes and green apple fruit. Super refreshing with a long palate that sizzles along to a long supple close.

Estate grown field blend of Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay Musqué, Riesling and Grüner Veltliner. Up to 7 days of skin contact before pressing. Natural co-ferment and maturation in a Pozvek foudré for 9 months on full lees. 100% malolactic fermentation. Bottled in January 2024 unfined and unfiltered.

Amber hue in the glass, this wine is complex and highly aromatic with scents of fresh apricot, musk and lychee. Peach, beeswax and subtle smoky notes. A creamy mid palate with a refreshing saline finish.

STAFF PICKS 2024 - RICH

Gewurtztraminer can be often misunderstood with low quality examples from the and 80's and 90's still in the minds and on the palates. This is a great wine to help change that mindset. Floral notes with honeysuckle leap from the glass with a hint of white pepper and the traditional spiciness. Due to an drier than normal vintage the alcohol is lower than usual and coming in at less than 1g residual sugar, there is a mineral freshness not often seen from this varietal. The palate follows the nose but brings in elements of stone fruit and sweet spice. If you haven't had a Gewurtztraminer in a hot minute, this is perfect. RICH

Hard as it may be to believe, this gewurz has stacks of yellow rose and star fruit aromas, but is only medium-bodied and tastes so bright. The interplay of the acidity and the exciting touches of tannin and bitterness drive the long, bone-dry finish. Just 12.6% alcohol. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink now. The 420 is a special plot that sits in the highly regarded Chianche sub-zone. The vines are on the round of a hill, so have multiple expositions and sit at 650 metres above the local woodlands that leave it exposed to the warm weather. PWS

Quite a different beast to the 'entry' Greco offering. There's a palpable intensity, structure and savouriness to the wine. Peach, lemon curd and a refreshing saline grapefruit acidity all in the mix along with a little nutty nuance. The texture starts of creamy and round but is quickly usurped by a wall of drying, pithy tannin which draws everything in at the back leaving dry and lightly bitter, pleasing finish. This is a distinctive wine built to be consumed with food to see it at its best. Idiosyncratic and intriguing in the best way. ALEX DOBSON, PWS

Showing Greco di Tufo’s serious, sophisticated side, this has discreet aromas suggesting stone fruit, lychee and Spanish broom. Linear and polished, the elegant palate offers white peach, pear and Myer lemon before finishing on hints of white almond and acacia honey. It’s bright, with fresh acidity while a saline finish keeps it savory. KERIN O'KEEFE

Planted at altitudes up to 400-metres located in the north of the island (Ponta Delgada and São Vincente), this late maturing grape is used to produce fruity, medium-dry styles. Considered a favourite amongst Madeira’s winemakers due to it’s ability to balance acidity, sugar and alcohol, at this level Verdelho produces a striking, off-dry wine that can also be served as an aperitif, with tapas dishes or more complex seafood dishes. With age, the wines grow in intensity, developing delicious honeyed depths and a creamy texture that is balanced by its racy acidity. 

Sercial is the driest style of Madeira and this 10-year-old has vibrant acidity. A rich tawny colour with aromas of fruit cake, nuts, dried orange peel and citrus freshness. An initial figgy richness on the palate gives way to notes of fresh citrus, toasted almonds, walnuts and savoury umami notes. Finishes crisp and dry with a delicious salty tang. This type of Madeira won't improve with bottle age, but an open bottle can keep for several months. DECANTER

100% Sercial grown on mixed volcanic soils and hand-harvested mid to late September. Fermented with some whole-clusters with skin maceration in lagares with native yeasts. Matured in canteiro; aged in balseiro (large cask) and pipas (pipes) for a minimum of 10 years. Winemaker: Humberto Jardím. Vegan. TA 5.8 g/l, pH 3.52, RS 55.1 g/l.

A juicy and very fresh gewurz with stacks of star fruit and licorice character. Just a touch of positive bitterness helps lift the medium-bodied palate, which is otherwise really silky. Beautiful balance in spite of the touch of unfermented grape sweetness. Mostly from young vines in the Grand Cru Hengst and the Clos Windsbuhl sites. Picked at the end of the 2022 harvest. Mixed dried fruits and nuts in a soft nose, all gooey and golden. There are dates and jar plums with fine old treacle from a tin can, a flourish of billy tea, and touches of aromatic timber and baking spice. Has a nicely defined palate with fruit extract and developing abstract secondaries providing a drying rail and grooving the palate. Succulence is nicely controlled – the sweetness only makes it halfway through the palate before the acid train takes over ... but by then the mouth-feel is up and about and sugar has done its trick. The non-vintage 15-Year-Old Verdelho has a Baume of 1.9 degrees. It has a terse, orange rind, California raisin and dried apricot-scented bouquet with attractive resinous aromas emerging with aeration. The palate is well-balanced with superb acidity, crisp, honeyed fruit and a delicious spicy finish that is focused and tense. This is one of the best in their range. Neal Martin, ROBERT PARKER

This has almost exactly the balance that I remember from the great gewurz of the late 20th century. Fragrant turkish delight character, rich yet dry with a wonderful interplay of ripeness, a mere hint of grape sweetness and complex spiciness. What a beautiful finish! Intensely smoky nose with notes of bergamot and gunpowder. Very powerful and structured, but so tense, energetic and bone dry, this is a very great expression of this unique site. It's a battle royal of North vs South for our second premium pack where the only winner is going to be you! From the warm southern coast to the rolling hills of the verdant north, Italy's multitude of breathtaking terroir and incredible indigenous varieties is one to impress.

This is an exciting little pack, something a little different with some cracking little wines brand new to the country, some Prince Wine Store classics and a couple of wines, we know, you will be happily and wonderfully surprised by.

From the north we start with one of the best new wines we have seen in a while. The Battiselle le Battiselle Soave is such a beautiful Soave. This is the second vintage of this to hit our shores and we missed the tiny allocation last time but certainly won't this time. You are in for a treat as we think this is one of best Soave's, if not, best white wine from Italy in some time.

Next up is the La Dama Vini Superiore. A nuanced and pretty style Valpolicella from a modern and thoughtful producer. Also relatively new to the country this see's the skins of the Amarone ferment added to the Valpolicella to add an extra depth and richness that you do not normally see from the Classico versions. 

Last is the king of red wine in Italy and the Mauro Veglio Barolo Gattera. Both the vineyard and the vintage favour this release with so much immediate appeal straight our of the gate. Veglio is turning back the use of oak and we are reaping the benefits for the change in tack. All the generosity is still there of the house style but with even more clarity and verve.

From the south we start with the Petila Greco di Tufo. This is another family estate that has only relatively recently started to bottle under their own label. This come from an elevated plot of old vines and see's some extended ageing and subtle barrel work. The zingy greco grape keeps it liveliness while the extra time in bottle has built and layered the wine.

We would be hard pressed not to include an Etna Rosso in the pack and we are so lucky that our choices here in Aus are so exceptional.  Giuseppe Tornatore spent much of the early 2000s sourcing some of the regions best plots which has proved to be an insightful move with, now some of the most highly sought after vineyards in his holding and what seems like an unstoppable thirst for his wines.

The last wine of the list is a real treat and was such a surprise for us in a recent tasting. This hails from foothills of Mt Vesuvias and in fact the vineyards overlook the famous ruins of Pompei. Unsurprisingly the wine reflects in origins and is an intriguing blend of piedirosso and aglianico that greets you with its smokey and charred fruit overlayed with dried and broody fruits.

For madeira to get the classification frasqueira, they are required to be aged a minimum of 20 years in barrel, and a further 2 in bottle. The variety used for this madeira as well is Malvazia, a white grape, usually used in sweeter styles of Madeira, due to higher acid and create balance in the finished sweet wine. This particular vintage was bottled in 2019 and released in 2021, with a total of 28 years cask aging.
Here's Crazy Mary-Jane! A big herbal hit on the nose takes away any possibility of candy over-sweetness. Caramel and grilled nuts run around in a complex of wood notes, and excellent freshness partners aged and developed secondary characters. Herbal-columbine, toffee-tobacco, sweet but smoky and caney. A lashing of acid squeak teases out a long, almost savoury tea-like finish, with sugar memories tumbling along behind. Scott Wasley, The Spanish Acquisition

More time in wood equals more complex wood-and-balsam volatile secondary beauty. The fruit characters are raisined, dried, preserved and citric all at once, wandering through a sky-wide nose of fine aromatic timber, grilled bread and nuts. Dry Sercial's vegetality is largely subsumed by fine old wood perfume. It’s complex as all get-out, but with great harmony and composure. Dry and saline in the mouth, it’s almost austere but with a nice textural generosity through the palate, marked by complex herbal-woodiness and juicy palate acidity.
