Extended time on the lees yields a Champagne with terrific flavor and textural complexity. This is an especially deep, vinous Champagne from Gosset. Larmandier Bernier Les Chemins d'Avize Grand Cru Extra Brut 2015The 2015 Extra Brut Les Chemins d'Avize Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru is a broad, ample Champagne that reflects both vinification in wood and time on the lees. Lemon confit, marzipan, dried flowers, chamomile, sage and spice build in the glass. Powerful and resonant, with no hard edges, the 2015 is terrific. It's also a throwback to the style of the time, and one I must say I like a lot. This is a fine effort for the year. Dosage is 2 grams per liter. ANTONIO GALLONI
The 2015 Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Les Chemins d'Avize opens in the glass with aromas of citrus oil, verbena, fresh pasty, vanilla pod and fresh herbs. Medium to full-bodied, pillowy and chalky, with a vinous, rather concentrated profile and bright acids, it's a little compact out of the gates but appears to be built to age with grace. Larmandier Bernier Vignes de Levant Grand Cru 2013The Larmandier family excelled in this cooler vintage, so it's unsurprising that the 2013 Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Vieille Vigne du Levant has turned out beautifully. Wafting from the glass with notes of crisp yellow orchard fruit, brioche, white flowers, oyster shell and honeycomb, it's medium to full-bodied, deep, layered and incisive, with a tangy spine of acidity, terrific tension and a long, racy finish. The 2013 Extra Brut Vieille Vigne de Levant Grand Cru is a Champagne of real breadth and substance that captures the essence of these 50-70-year-old vines. Apricot, chamomile, dried flowers and a kiss of oak are all amplified. Vinous and creamy, the 2013 builds beautifully with time in the glass, showing tremendous character and pedigree. The 2013 was fermented and aged in a combination of neutral barrique and foudre. It's a super-classic Larmandier-Bernier Champagne. Dosage is 2 grams per liter. ANTONIO GALLONI

Krug Grand Cuvee -172 NVThe 172ème édition, based around the 2016 vintage, is a delicate, floral and saline Grande Cuvée at this early stage in its life. The palate it taut, tightly wound, gradually unfurling into toasted fruit bread, rye bread and roasted nuts, wrapped around an intricate and taut lemon core. It's exceptionally long, spicy, rounded and spherical in shape. Notes of sweet unsalted butter round out the finish, which has such length, elegance and balance. 58% of the wine is from the 2016 vintage, which saw a lot of rain in the spring and close to flowering, with 42% from reserve wines. Louis Roederer Cristal 2015If the 2014 vintage was especially open and demonstrative, the 2015 Cristal is going to require more patience. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of citrus oil, crisp stone fruits, white flowers, crushed mint and subtle hints of buttery pastry, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a deep, concentrated and rather introverted core of fruit framed by chalky extract and animated by a pretty pinpoint mousse. Hospices de Beaune Beaune Nicolas Rolin 2021 1erLike previous vintages this is on the darker side of the spectrum but the fruit remains upbeat and sappy in the mouth. Considerable tannins provide the framework while notes of spice, turned earth and a dusting of pepper waft from the glass. It is a little reserved at the moment, that’s to be expected, but the sumptuousness and creaminess of the very old vine fruit, the line of acidity that adds the fresh, sappy elements, those solid but beautifully formed tannins and bead of minerality that bursts through the palate, they all tell a story of a beautifully composed wine, raised by a master of his craft, that should develop wonderfully for at least a decade or so, probably much more. The final flush of florality and mineral laced fruit is enough to excite anyone who loves Burgundy.

Pol Roger Winston Churchill 2015The 2015 Brut Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill shows off the savory side of the vintage to great effect. Hints of dried pear, sage, mint, dried flowers, lemon oil and chamomile open gradually in this mid-weight, lithe edition of Pol Roger's tête de cuvée. The 2015 unfolds nicely with time in the glass, but I wouldn't think of opening a bottle anytime soon. Readers will find a nervy Winston Churchill marked by notable freshness and vigor more than size. A strong effort in a less-acclaimed vintage, Pol Roger's newly released 2015 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill opens in the glass with aromas of confit citrus, ripe orchard fruits and dried white flowers mingled with hints of honeycomb, freshly baked bread and anise. Medium to full-bodied, vinous and concentrated, with bright acids, chalky structuring extract and a pinpoint mousse, this inherently rather rich, gastronomic Champagne is quite tightly wound out of the gates and will reward a bit of bottle age. The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques emerges from a tiny parcel planted in 1949. Dark and complex in its first impression, the 2022 possesses notable fruit purity and a good bit of supporting structure, despite its deceptively mid-weight feel. White pepper, orange peel and tea leaves build in the glass, leading effortlessly into the clean, mineral-laced finish. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous.comOUTSTANDING. Here too firm reduction dominates the fruit at present. Otherwise, the markedly earthy big-bodied and almost painfully intense flavors flash imposing power on the driving and palate staining finish that delivers excellent length. Scents of pipe tobacco, cedar, crushed rocks, spice and red-toned fruit emanate from the glass. There is a brooding quality in the 2022 that I find quite appealing. There is enough reduction to suppress all but subtle spice wisps. The gorgeously textured and strikingly delineated if not especially concentrated medium-bodied flavors exude a fine bead of minerality on the caressing yet powerful, even robust, youthfully austere finish. Henri Giraud Grand Cru MV18The MV 18 is a classic Giraud Champagne. Apricot jam, tangerine peel, spice, honey and hazelnut give this mid-weight, classy Champagne tons of complexity and nuance. Readers will find a Champagne of notable purity and finesse. There's plenty of Giraud intensity, but in a mid-weight style that is hugely appealing. This is the bottled essence of Henri Giraud, with the unmissable stamp of Aÿ Pinot Noir. Child of the ripe, voluminous yet fine 2018 vintage, this is replenished with wine from the house's famous perpetual reserve, created in 1990, and is loaded with promise. On the nose, the generous and bold fruitiness is seamlessly integrated into the soft, smoky oaky tones. Dried apricots and sweet nectarines meet exotic spices and candied orange. The concentration does not amount to too much on the pulpy-juicy palate. Prickly bubbles bring a notion of vibrancy and freshness to the rich whole. The 2021 Pinot Noir Savoy Vineyard has tightened in bottle since I first tasted it in early 2023. From vines planted in 1991 and 1994, it opens with struck flint and takes plenty of time to unwind its pomegranate, rhubarb, licorice and bergamot aromas. The light-bodied palate reveals complex flavors, but it's youthfully coiled at this stage. It has a chiseled frame of chalky tannins and firm acidity and a long, citrus and tea leaf finish. It becomes more expressive as it opens in the glass and will reveal its full potential after several more years in bottle. 345 cases were made. (94+) ERIN BROOKS

Domaine Robert Groffier Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Les Haut Doix 2022Nic used 50% whole bunch here. He owns half the entire Cru, the other half, I believe, is sold to a negotiant and a tiny amount is purchased by Lucien Le Moine. So, if you haven’t heard of it there is no wonder. The Cru, as you can see on the map, is essentially a continuation of Amoureuses, so much so that one half kind of warps in to that hallowed vineyard. The wines are very similar too, highly mineral, clearly delineated with abundant freshness and vivacity but also a gorgeous, if somewhat reserved, sumptuous swirl of darker berry notes. So pure, pretty and seductive. Needs time. Gorgeous. ROSCOE
Nicolas Groffier describes his hectare of Haut Doix as 'very luminous but not very warm'; he notes that they picked early here in 2022 (27 August) and brought the grapes in at 13% potential alcohol; they were fermented as 50% whole clusters and are ageing in cask (one-third new). His precautions resulted in a perfumed and elegant wine with ripe mulberry and pomegranate fruit, floral notes, and a lush sweetness on the palate that is very attractive. (95) DECANTER
35% new wood, 50% whole bunch. The first to be picked reflecting the sandy soil here. A fresh vivid purple. Fresh white pepper on the nose. There is a herbaceous touch which I must say I really rather like but will not be for everyone. Mixed ripeness perhaps is what gives a sense of complexity. A long keeper for Nicolas. Domaine Robert Groffier Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers 2022Directly below the Grand Cru Bonnes Mares. Wildly different to everything else tasted so far. Darker in colour and personality. Nicolas explains his parcels have blue clay and ironstone, giving them more warmth and breadth. The bunches are noticeable but settled in to the expansive fruit nicely. Straight lined and muscular tannins. Tensile wine with great vitality despite its size. Powerhouse of flavour that hits your mouth with real conviction and intent. It’s a great Premier Cru but patience is advised. ROSCOE
Sentiers is on the border with Morey and shares some of its character. According to Nicolas Groffier, just 40cm of iron-rich clay covers the limestone here. He ferments the wine completely as whole clusters and ages it in cask (one-third new). The finished wine has a deep fig and plum fruit with hints of earth, iron, and tar. The texture is firmly tannic but leavened by the finesse of Chambolle. The overall result is impressive, if a bit fearsome at present – let this settle for five to seven years before opening for best results. (95) DECANTER
The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Sentiers 1er Cru offers darker, earthier fruit than the Les Seuvrées, with touches of loam and wild hedgerow, all finely delineated. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and tensile, with sappy red fruit and a linear, reserved finish. You would think this comes from a cooler vintage, as it is very classical in style NEAL MARTIN
35% new wood, 90% whole bunches. A bright plump purple colour. Lively fruit suggesting some iron in the soil. Nicolas tells me there is lots in the lower part of the vineyard. The medium-bodied palate is effortlessly balanced, its concentrated flavors framed by silky tannins and bright acidity, and it has a very long, layered and spicy finish. 300 cases were made. Domaine de Lambrays Clos Des Lambrays 2022A beguiling first nose: balance, poise, gentle intensity, and exhilarating fruit purity, with black raspberry, light licorice, and the first hints of floral, sweet herbal, and spice notes. Very gentle, graceful, silken entry—what Jacques aptly describes as a “caress”—with great layered density as it gradually expands in the mouth but also superb refinement of very fine-grain tannin, a gentle squeeze, finely supportive, succulent throughout, with a fruit ripeness that comes across almost as a sucrosity on the mid-palate, and a gentle glowing warmth on the finish. …this was still beautifully transparent but even more expressive and vivid, with more of the aromatic nuances starting to show, which revealed more clearly how harmoniously and seamlessly they weave together. There are no negative telltale signs of the 80% whole-bunch fermentation, the stems as invisible per se as Jacques always hoped. The depth of the layering and the grandeur of the scale were also clearer four months on, leaving no doubt that it has the structure to age for decades, but as the tannins gradually melt and soften rather than tighten and the final impression is of great fragrant persistence, there is equally no doubt that the aging will be graceful and all the defining characteristics crystal-clear at full maturity. Collectors searching for the top wines of the Côte de Nuits will want to secure an allocation of this as soon as it is offered. The assemblage of all of the portions of the Clos is superb, with a seductive black cherry and mulberry fruit that is at once fresh and round, with complexity coming from mineral and earth notes and a bit of polished oak spice. The texture is dense and complete yet marvellously vibrant with impressive length. The selection is ever more severe, with even more grapes declassified into Les Loups, delivering a compelling wine that will live for decades. (97) CHARLES CURTIS MWThe 2022 Clos des Lambrays contains 80% whole bunches (100% in the very old vines, a lower proportion elsewhere). A fine even deep ruby purple. The bouquet is backward with still a suggested intensity of fruit that can easily cope with the stems. Beautifully suave with an enveloping dark red fruit, a very graceful finish on silky, refined tannins, and we don’t often say silky for Morey St Denis. They are caressing, according to Jacques. Domaine Robert Groffier Bonnes Mares Grand Cru 202250 % new wood and 90% whole bunch vinification. Picked on the second day. A heady bright purple. The bouquet is backward but suggesting a classical fruit profile, more raspberry than strawberry, with enough density that the whole bunch effect is not so evident. Now a little white pepper. A beautiful expression of dark raspberry fruit on the nose, just a little acidity, with great sense of balance (98) JASPER MORRIS MW
Nicolas Groffier produced a classic Bonnes Mares from his one-hectare holding, with dark damson plum and mulberry fruit aromas and hints of cedar, smoke, and pepper. The structure is firmly tannic, solid, and dense, but not heavy or ungainly – muscular elegance, one might say. The parcel is in one solid piece near the Morey end of the village; Nicolas describes it as being 75% terres rouges and 25% terres blanches; the grapes are entirely fermented as whole clusters with a gentle extraction CHARLES CURTIS MW, Decanter

Domaine Robert Groffier Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses - La Grace des Argiles 2022The recipe for both 2022 Amoureuses wines is 30% new wood and 100% whole bunches. The Grâce des Argiles comes from the bottom section of the vineyard, grown on red clay. A solid rich bouquet yet absolutely with its seductive charm. A velvet covering on a big frame with a delicious richness of fruit without losing the precision of the year. A superb fruit weight, yet with energy from a sufficiently mineral acidity to finish. Nicolas Groffier knows his Amoureuses – his domaine is the largest owner. From 2022, he will separate the portion just below Musigny, with sandier soils, from the rest, which he calls 'normal Amoureuses' from the bottom of the steep slope to the flat part next to Musigny. The grapes are entirely fermented as whole clusters but with gentle extraction and almost no punching down. The result is a deep blackberry fruit with hints of bramble, earth, and mint; the texture is firm, dense, and tannic. The wine continues to age in cask, one-third new. CHARLES CURTIS MW, Decanter
