It’s dry and nutty, distinctly saline, fine chalky texture, green olive brine and pistachio, with a tangy, zesty and nutty finish of excellent length. Amen Break Cabernet Franc 2021There's certainly a bustle in the hedgerow here, with blackberry, black raspberry, leaf, dried roses and pencils. Medium-bodied, cool acidity, a distinctly 'mineral' feel, intense small berried dark fruit, graphite tannin, a little sundried tomato and raspberry pip, and a spicy and gently bitter amaro/sappy finish of excellent length. Hailing from a small village in east of Australia called New Zealand the Clonal Brothers are Matt and Steve Harrop and together they are a lethal winemaking combination. Pierre Marie Chermette Beaujolais Les Griottes Beaujolais 2023 375mlThis mouthwatering crowd-pleaser is named after a grove of cherry trees that flank the vineyard. The fruit is drawn from 30- to 40-year-old Gamay vines, grown in dark granite soils around the Chermette homestead in Saint-Vérand, southern Beaujolais. In contrast to his age-worthy Crus from Moulin-à-Vent and Fleurie et al., Chermette aims to produce something light-to-medium-bodied, bright and cherry-fruited with reach-for-another-glass charm.
The winemaking has remained unchanged for decades, with traditional whole-bunch, semi-carbonic fermentation in concrete tanks followed by maturation in tank and old oak casks still the order of the day. The nose is so exuberant you could be tasting out of barrel, flush with easy-going, lip-smacking red fruit flecked by red floral notes. The palate tells the same story through waves of vibrant, tangy berries and cherrystone fruit. As always, it is a delicious, moreish wine and fabulous value.

Lustau Don Nuno Oloroso Reserva 375mlWith an average age of 12 years, the wine immediately exudes soft, rich aromas of dried fruit, mixed spice, and toffee. Layer upon layer wafts from the glass, giving something new with each sniff. Gentle spice, herbaceous alpine edge brings freshness, cranberry and bright cherry fruits. Red spectrum rather than blue black of the spiritual home of Gamay but delicious and dangerously drinkable none the less.

This is a bit of a staff favourite too. A few of us sweet tooths are big fans of this bad boy and this is a very cool interpretation that isn't quite as intense concentrated as its orginators in Spain but is all the better for it. A little lighter on its feet and that's the way we like it.

We absolutely loved this at a recent tasting so just had to put it into this pack. Don't be surprised if you hear us talking about it some more because this is what cab franc should be. Soft and supple but countered with some fine powdery tanning and a whicked little crunch to the fruit. It explodes in the glass with raspberry, cherry, redcurrant and balckberry thast just swirls around and around. So vibrant with awesome balance. Made from Cot, the local name for malbec there's an ebullient lift to the nose of maraschino cherries, violets and fragrant blackberries with hints of black pepper thanks to the inclusion of whole bunches. A framework of tannins envelopes the intense core of dark berries with an undertow of savoury minerality to support. Dicey Bannockburn Pinot Noir 2021James is the grower, Matt the caretaker and they are the Dicey brothers. They are also neighbours with all the fruit for Dicey is sourced from the family's vineyards in the Bannockburn sub region of Central Otago. All sustainable and all about showing place.
Nice perfumed aromatics with soft violet, ripe dark cherries, anise and dark plum all interspersed with spicy cedar and delicate woodlands notes. That Otago rich dark cherry is on show but this doesn't feel too big or bulky like some others can. A touch of anise, that same dark plum all pile in there giving this plenty of push and depth. Its supple and soft with a lovely flow that carries the palate to a long finish that seems to unfold dark fruits, savoury spice, cedar and foresty notes layer by layer.
