John Duval Annexus Grenache 2022From Stonegarden vineyard, planted in 1858. 300 cases made. Raspberry, red cherry, mint nougat, floral too, with something a little more stony in play. It’s medium-bodied, almond and red fruit, fine pumice stone tannin, mint and sage, succulent but controlled, with a slightly warm raspberried finish of excellent length. Very good. Paul-Henri Thillardon Chenas Les Carrieres 2019Pretty and perfumed, the 2019 Chénas Les Carrières wafts from the glass with notes of sweet berry fruit, potpourri, peonies and spices. Medium-bodied, pure and lively, with fine tannins and lively acids, despite the warm conditions, it's surprisingly reminiscent of the Thillardon brothers' 2016 vintage. Daniel Bouland Morgon Corcelette 2022The "regular" bottling of 2022 Corcelette from Monsieur Bouland is another lovely example of this very strong vintage. It is deep, bright and sappy, offering up a nose of red and black cherries, sweet cranberries, vinesmoke, gamebird, a dollop of fresh thyme and a very pretty base of soil tones. On the palate the wine is vibrant, full-bodied and deep at the core, with a fine foundation of soil, bright acids, moderate tannins and great focus and grip on the long, complex and beautifully balanced finish. Of all of Daniel's outstanding 2022s, this is certainly the first cuvée I would be reaching for to drink now, as it has a sense of wide open generosity that is not evident with most of his other, more structured wines from this vintage. This is not to say that it will not also age long and gracefully, but the regular Corcelette is not going to demand cellaring time before it gives up the goods. 2024-2060. Gregoire Hoppenot Fleurie Les Moriers 2021Hoppenot farms almost three-hectares of this imposing east-facing terroir overlooking the famous windmill of Moulin-a-Vent. Les Moriers shares a border with Poncié, Les Roches and Les Garants and the vines at the top of the vineyard lie a stone’s throw from the winery.
Vine age varies from 35 to 90 years. Rising from 260 metres on the Moulin-a-Vent border to 340 metres at the top of the slope, this steep hillside contains two mineral rich soil types: the vines at the top of the slope are on very poor soils of shallow granitic sand; then it becomes heavier in the Bas de Moriers with increasing clay concentration over the granite bedrock. Grégoire Hoppenot farms in both sectors, reserving the best fruit for this single-terroir bottling.2021GamayFrance352$63.00 As low as $56.70 -

Felsina Chianti Classico 2021The 2021 Chianti Classico Berardenga is boisterous and expressive right out of the glass. Dark fruit, earthiness, leather, spice and tobacco convey tons of Castelnuovo Berardenga character. The 2021 keeps getting better in the glass. It's a super-classic example of the house style and a wine readers should consider buying by the case. The Berardenga bottling can be a bit wild, but in 2021 has an added touch of sophistication that is undeniable. ANTONIO GALLONI2021sangioveseItaly495$64.00 As low as $57.60

Querciabella Chianti Classico 2021
STAFF PICKS 2024 - LACHLAN CUFFE
For a couple of years now we've been hearing from the team at Querciabella about how good the 2021 vintage was. Well the wine finally arrived a bit earlier this year and we are not disappointed. Incredibly fresh and vibrant with classic red cherry and rose petal notes. The fruit is beautifully ripe without being over the top and the wine is simply a joy. As good as any Chianti Classico I've tried this year. LACHLAN
The 2021 Chianti Classico is fabulous. Bright and punchy, with terrific resonance, this wine shows just how compelling the vintage is. Readers will find a Chianti Classico of dynamic energy and volume. Dark red cherry, purplish fruit, lavender, rose petal, spice and a gentle kiss of French oak build into the sumptuous, vibrant finish. Superb. The 2021 was aged in 500-liter barrels (5-6% new) for 14 months and is a blend of fruit from Greve, Gaiole and Radda. ANTONIO GALLONI, VinousThis has a fresh character with ripe cherries and raspberries as well as dried flowers, bark and stones. Polished and textural with a medium body and vivid acidity. Focused and fresh with chalky tannin structure and a linear finish with notes of citrus and minerals. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. JAMES SUCKLING
A saturated purple/magenta hue, the 2021 Chianti Classico is lush and fresh with aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, violet, and fresh leather. Plush and inviting, with bright acidity along the sides of the palate shining through, it offers a velvety texture with a long finish. It’s polished but not oaky and has a very refined feel, with medium to full body and a long and balanced finish. Drink 2026-2040. JEB DUNNUCK
This red is precise, offering cherry, raspberry, rose, iron and tobacco flavors fused to a steely, dense and vibrant structure. Balanced and intense, building to a long aftertaste infused with fruit and mineral notes. Best from 2026 through 2045. BRUCE SANDERSON, Wine Spectator

San Filippo Lo Scorno Rosso di Montalcino 2022Nestled in the rolling hills east of Montalcino, San Filippo is one of the standout estates crafting wines of balance power, elegance, and age-worthiness. Founded in 1972, the estate has gained widespread recognition for its commitment to terroir-driven, expressive Sangiovese. In his time, Owner Roberto Gianelli has done an incredible job transforming his 10+ acre property, no easy feat considering the company he keeps in one of the most sought-after locales on the Montalcino hill.
The Rosso from San Filippo is a fresher, more approachable expression of Sangiovese, offering vibrant red fruit and silky tannins. 100% estate fruit. Includes declassified fruit from the Brunello that doesn't make the cut so pretty flippin good gear going into a wine like this, that's for sure.
Lovely lifted nose with crushed dried flowers, woodsy notes, clove, and burnished spice over kirsch-like fruit and damson plum. The fruit is sumptuous and soft cut with superfine tannins and a lick of fresh leather. A combo of sweet and savoury with warmth and generosity. It remains fresh and plucky while delivering plenty of depth and drive to take it home.2022sangioveseItaly495 -

Gentle Folk Onakaparinga Valley Sangiovese 2023SPECIAL BUY - Halliday Wine CompanionA new addition to the Gentle Folk portfolio. Like the harmony and flow of precise choreography, this is an effortless, purposeful wine and commands pause. Potpourri and twig, sour red cherry and fired clay. Lessons in beauty and grace. But it is wilful; there is intent. The scent of watering the tomatoes in summer, dusk looming. Dried marjoram, oregano and soft leather. Powerful. The tannins are granular, complete and fine. We often talk about integrated structure in wine as a requisite for excellence, but this is something more fluid than a sum of parts integrated, it is metronomic balance. A very fine wine that transcends expectations. (96) KATRINA BUTLER, Halliday Wine Companion
Medium cherry red colour. Raspberry, red cherry, musk stick and crushed rose petal on the nose. Medium weight on the palate, a wonderful mix of red fruits with musk, rose and dusty earth all playing their notes in harmony as it flows along the palate. Tannins have classic sangiovese grip but stay in time with the fruit, ensuring a great carry and final dryness. Will evolve further in the cellar too. Artuke Finca de los Locos Rioja 2021Finca de Los Locos is an old, single vineyard wine grown high on slopes of the Cantabrian mountians north of the town of Banos. Arturo and Kike de Miguel’s grandfather planted the vines in the 1950s, though other farmers of the day thought he was mad to work such a difficult, rock-strewn slope when so much land was available on the flat plains of the Rioja Valley floor. Sixty years later however, this single parcel is consistently producing some of the finest examples of terroir-focused wine in the region. Made with 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano, Finca de Los Locos is black-fruited, decidedly cool climate and massively over delivers for the price. Duseigneur Lirac Antares 2021
Looking at the 2021s from barrel, the 2021 Lirac Antares shows the fresher style of the vintage yet still brings solid fruit and texture. Spice, violets, flowers, and lavender as well as both red and black fruits define the nose, and it's balanced, has fine tannins, and lots to like. JEB DUNNUCK
Antarès is the main star of the constellation of Scorpio. One of the basic principles of biodynamics is to work in harmony with cosmic rhythms. Antarès is a selection of vines located on hillsides facing North, at the Western end of the Lirac appellation, at an altitude of 160m. The vines are 50 years old. The harvest is fully de-stemmed. Each variety is vinified separately using natural yeasts. The Grenache is aged in cement vats, the Mourvèdre in old French oak demi-muids for 12 months.
60% Grenache, 40% Mouvèdre farmed organically (Certified).Notes of strawberry, black raspberries, pine, sandalwood and a hint of ground black pepper in this ripe but restrained blend. A full-bodied and concentrated wine that maintains remarkable vibrance and acidity throughout. Fine-grained tannins accentuate its youthful appeal. Ripe black fruits, licorice, cloves and wood smoke present the 2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Medium to full in body, the 2021 offers good concentration and freshness yet demands at least three more years in bottle to further integrate the grippy tannins. That said, there’s enough substance to ensure positive development with extended bottle-aging. NICOLAS GREINACHER, Vinous

L'Erta di Radda Chianti Classico 2021The 2021 Chianti Classico is a deep, savory wine that is still coming together after its bottling. Crushed flowers, herbs, mint, spice and white pepper lend notable aromatic complexity throughout. I would not plan on opening a bottle for at least another year or two. The 2021 has tons of fruit and overall depth, but the elements have not fully come together. It’s a wine of real character and personality that captures all the pedigree of this great vintage. Le Chiuse Rosso di Montalcino 2022
Bottled in December, the bright ruby 2022 Rosso Di Montalcino leaps out of the glass with poppy lift in its effusive aromas of red cherries and wild red berries, licorice candies, and pressed flowers. Easygoing and approachable although it still has lovely Sangiovese character, it has a delicately juicy feel, with fine tannins, a fresh, balanced level of acidity, and a clean finish. Drink 2024-2030. AUDREY FRICKE
The juicy and delicious 2022 Rosso di Montalcino from Le Chiuse is a textbook Rosso. It opens with aromas of ripe dark berry, spice and blue flower while the succulent palate delivers ripe Morello cherry, crushed raspberry, star anise and ground clove. Lithe polished tannins and tangy acidity keep it balanced, bright and accessible. Drink through 2027. KERIN O'KEEFEWonderfully pure and lifted, the 2022 Rosso di Montalcino opens with a beautiful cascade of rose petals, sage and wild strawberries. Vanguardist V Grenache 2023Vanguardist-farmed Rende vineyard bush vines, around 55 years old; 60% whole bunch, with about seven weeks on skins; matured in 2200L Slavonian oak. The cool vintage has its say. Refined, fragrant and elegant, but savoury and spicy, too. Distinct nebbiolo/nerello mascalese riffs, more the latter – an increasing theme at this address. Dried cranberry and cherry, freeze-dried raspberry and orange, from dehydrated peel to the bitter orange note in amaro, chinotto, Campari … five spice, clove, green cardamom, white pepper, alpine herbs, sour plum, dried mint, pressed flowers, warm terracotta. It’s finer of feel. Is it lesser for it? Nope. It’s laden with so much flavour and etched with ultra-fine but authoritative tannins and refreshing acidity. This also opens up and holds for days, suggesting a very bright future. So individual; so stunning. (97) MARCUS ELLIS, wine companion2023GrenacheAustralia349$73.00 As low as $65.70

Aphelion Trennery Grenache 2021Onkaparinga. A wonderful word. Plum and cherry, ripe and spicy, an earthy coal-like character. It’s firm and almost liqueur-like in intensity, with firm dusty tannin, and a dry plum and dried flower finish. Very good, but not quite as good as the other two single vineyard wines. Kind of sticky in its firmness. GARY WALSH, www.winefront.com
From the Onkaparinga Hills, a parcel of dry-grown bush vines, fermented as whole clusters and aged in a single, larger-format cask. This parcel was planted in the early 1970s and it has a sappy feel (whole clusters) and bright, very pure raspberries and some leafy elements on offer, as well as blueberries. The palate has quite smooth and ripe tannins, holds a fresh edge (low pH) and delivers a similar combination of red and blue fruits as seen on the nose. A little, chewy stone pop at the finish. Cigliano di Sopra Chianti Classico 2021I love the Cigliano di Sopra 2021 Chianti Classico. This fabulous wine comes from an exciting estate that I absolutely recommend you seek out. Made with organic Sangiovese, it offers a punchy and bright fruit profile with cassis, red berry and blue flower that pop from the glass. The wine offers balance, freshness and an elegantly streamlined style. It feels transparent, almost fragile. Fruit is selected from across a seven-hectare site, and within that space, three hectares were planted in the 1970s and 1980s. The rest were planted more recently from 2004 on. With exactly 11,586 bottles made, this is a thrilling discovery. (94) MONICA LARNER
I feel like a new benchmark for fine wine is being set by Maddalena Fucile and Matteo Vaccari of Cigliano di Sopra in San Casciano Val di Pesa. These young winemaking colleagues studied enology together in Florence and both worked with Sashi Moorman and Rajat Parr at Domaine de la Côte in California and at other prestigious wine estates in Italy. Winemaking is hands-on and artisanal in the stone underground cellar of Maddalena's family Tuscan villa. Farming is organic and biodynamic, and I want to underline the sheer excitement I feel for these wines and this promising up-and-coming estate.

Artuke Finca de los Locos Rioja 2022One of the most intriguing trends in Rioja today, mirroring developments in other wine regions around the world, is the emergence of primary, reductive wines. A prime illustration of this is the 2022 Finca de los Locos, crafted from a blend of 75% Tempranillo, 20% Graciano and 5% Viura. Sourced from a vineyard planted in 1981 in Baños de Ebro, Rioja Alavesa, it was fermented with native yeast and aged for up to 12 months in large oak foudres. The 2022 displays a deep purple hue and unfolds enticing aromas of blueberry, violets and herbs against a backdrop of oak. On the palate, it is dry, juicy and chalky, with refreshing acidity that lends a compact and primary mouthfeel. This is definitely worth a sip. JOAQUIN HIDALGO, Vinous.com
Finca de Los Locos is often the chalkiest and most refreshing of Arturo de Miguel's reds and that's certainly the case here. Sourced from a parcel at 560 metres in Baños de Ebro, this is a well-judged cuvée of Tempranillo, 20% Graciano and 5% Viura, showing subtle stony reduction, good focus and depth, violet and mountain herb aromas, redcurrant and wild strawberry fruit and a pithy finish. MMAD Grenache 2022
This is ballistically good. I doubt that I’ll taste anything much better from these shores over the next 12 months. The first thing you notice is the plushness, which is always welcome, but it’s the finish that takes things to eleven. Wow, really, this wine has a show-stopping finish on it. It’s blessed with red and blue berry flavours, cedarwood, roasted spice and earth, but itemising the flavours of this wine kind of misses the point. It’s like focussing on the colour of a tidal wave. The complete and utter command of the final flourish of flavour and tannin here feels, as you swallow, like a high water mark. I’m sold, totally sold, on this wine.
