The 2021 Pinot Noir definitely reflects vintage. Its good colour and abundance of gravelly tannins display the smaller berried, smaller vintage. The 2021 Pinot Noir is vibrant on the nose and totally precise and focused. The acid spools right from the front of the palate and has a mobile, agile way about it. The season may have had it's challenges, but the wine is effortless, natural and shapely. It's great. Eleni et Edouard Vocoret Chablis Le Bas de Chapelot 2022The 2022 Chablis Le Bas de Chapelot underwent partial tressage in the vineyard this year, so the Vocorets could compare. They found the fruit ripened earlier with more intense aromas. These will be bottled separately. It has a lovely peachy, nectarine-tinged bouquet that blossoms in the glass. The palate is well-balanced with touches of grapefruit and white peach. It is very elegant and pure, with a touch of spice towards the finish. Simply a mouthwatering prospect - difficult to believe this is not a Premier Cru. NEAL MARTIN
TOP VALUE - This also displays an ample amount of mineral reduction on the aromas of brine, algae and white orchard fruit. There is even better density to the sappy and palate soaking medium-bodied flavors that also flash focused power on the stony, moderately austere and beautifully persistent finale. Love this wine. Has the early supple appeal of Savigny but it's not simple. Red fruits, brown spice and lingering florals plus a dusting of background wood characterise the nose. The palate is immediately red fruited and eveloping with a supple texture that again has some drying limestone dusty quality. Alexandre Brault Monthelie Les Riottes 1er Cru 2020I sometimes think Monthelie reds are a forgotten member of the Burg family. So often they can provide so much immediacy and enjoyment and often for a fraction of the cost of a wine from neighbouring Volnay. This is no exception. Turned earth, amaro herbs frames juice and nicely ripe rep and black fruits. The spice element from judicious oak use is also a lovely addition and theres a trail of tannins that afford the wine freedom without sacrificing form. Vasse Felix Heytesbury Chardonnay 2023A wine that starts with a whisper and ends in a crescendo. A little flint, lemon oil and spice act as a quiet introduction before the wine expands in your mouth. This is a wine that's all about texture, first enveloping your palate with its silken caress before it's drawn in and funneled to the finish with a lovely chalky embrace. There's a distinctive gin and tonic character, salty pink grapefruit, a little white peach and a subtle herbal seasoning. The oak is there, but not leading the conversation, as little influence as I can remember seeing in this wine. It's still a little embyronic at this early stage of it's life but as is the case with Heytesbury a little time is needed to draw out the full bow. A wine of such class and quiet confidence. Lilbert Fils Blanc de Blancs PerleThe NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Perle Grand Cru is fabulous. A Champagne of uncanny depth and intensity, the Perle is quite structured in this release. White pepper, flowers, crushed rock, mint and lemon peel abound. More than anything else, I am struck by the wines. ANTONIO GALLONI
A lower-pressure cuvée originally inspired by Mumm's erstwhile Crémant de Cramant, it offers up attractive aromas of yellow orchard fruit, sweet citrus, hazelnuts, buttery pastry and flowers, followed by a medium to full-bodied, pillowy and charming palate that's suave and fleshy, concluding with a saline finish. Bertrand Lilbert's wines have long been insider favourites, particularly the intensely characterful, clean-cut and aromatic Cramant Chardonnay, and the Perle - which follows a tradition in the village of reducing the pressure of the mousse by one third to give finer, creamier bubbles. de Villaine Mercurey Rouge Les Montots 2022A little iron in the soil here. North-east of the appellation, near Clos Myglands and La Framboisière. Plain south-facing, the soil a little red from the iron.
Ooh - now that's a beauty - a more sophisticated width of complex and attractive flavour. In the mouth - fresh and energetic - really complex - a little more blocky from the tannin today - this will also benefit from your patience but the finishing flavour, working its way through the tannin is completely delicious. Really a personality here. Very good but with much potential to improve. BILL NANSONCertified biodynamic. Light to mid crimson. Smells of little wild cherries, open and expressive. Firm and chewy texture holds all this lovely fruit in shape. Complete, satisfying and full in the mouth yet still very fresh. Needs time. JULIA HARDING
A notably more floral-suffused nose features distinctly earthy and ripe aromas of various dark berries, especially cherry, along with hints of kirsch and the sauvage. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the beautifully textured, if not particularly dense, medium-bodied flavors that exhibit moderate warmth and rusticity. This firmly structured effort is borderline old school in style though with that said, it offers excellent potential for a villages-level wine. DuMol Wester Reach Chardonnay Russian River Valley 2022A bright yellow color, the 2022 Chardonnay Wester Reach is a textbook example of this vintage, with a lot of elegance and a wide drinking window. From the Russian River Valley and aged in 25% new oak barrels for 11 months, it takes on more glycerol richness and a rounded profile. A great wine out of the gate, it captures the sunny feel of the region, but it's light on its feet and closes with a great finish.
