  1. Domaine de Bellene Nuits St Georges Vieilles Vignes 2021
Domaine de Bellene Nuits St Georges Vieilles Vignes 2021

A very Nuits like nose offers up notes of forest floor, the savage, purple fruit and an herbal tea top note. There is excellent intensity and precision to the solidly voluminous medium bodied flavors that conclude in a robust, rustic and powerful finish. This too could use more depth, but it has the stuffing to develop it. BURGHOUND

Domaine de Bellene Volnay Les Grands Poisots 2021

A fresh and airy nose is comprised by notes of red and dark berries along with plenty of newly turned earth character. The caressing, delicious and vibrant flavors possess very good volume before terminating in a mildly austere and sneaky long finish. This too possesses fine development potential and overall, it is a Volnay villages to consider.  BURGHOUND

Lovely aromas of raspberry and dark cherry fruit laid over a faintly stony backbeat and gorgeous blue florals of violets. The palate is medium to full with demure but insistent attack of sweet cherry and spice overtones. Love the delineated flavours as it slides across the palate. Intensity of flavour without heft. I love the limestone drying quality in this wine and the mouth aromas that mark it as a Volnay through and through. MICHAEL MCNAMARA, PWS

The NV Extra-Brut Cuvee R is 90% Chardonnay, 5% Pinot Noir and 5% Pinot Meunier aged in cask. This is a beautifully precise, vibrant Champagne that emerges with attractive layers of perfumed, expressive fruit wrapped around a rich, creamy finish. The presence of red grapes and oak give the wine a level of depth and richness that deftly balances the intense minerality of Vertus and the house style. This is Lot 6503, disgorged: March, 2009.

Subtle spice and wood is evident but in no means detracts from the rather enticing aromatics. Smoky, incense and deeply pitched, upfront fruit but overall the style is mid weight and fragrant with a bitter cherry clip that carries the fruit along a fine and detailed palate. Long and precise wine with ample grip and muscle, those bunchy elements help to contour and shape things while little bursts of minerality pique the interest. What a beauty! The 2021 Pinot Noir Le Puits Sec blossoms in the glass with a gorgeous mix of dusty violets and roses complemented by autumnal spice, giving way to citrus-tinged wild berries. This sweeps across the palate with finesse, lifted and ethereal, with shades of blue and purple inner florals accentuating dark red fruits. It finishes long and hauntingly floral with a tactile mineral crunch and coating of gently grippy tannins. For lovers of old-school Oregon Pinot, the 2021 is dreamy. ERCI GUIDO, Vinous Media

    OUTSTANDING -
An enticing nose offers up an array of floral nuances, red currant, green tea and a whiff of crushed mint. This is not a seductive wine but its subtle and balanced and invites you back for sip after sip. BURGHOUND

WILLIAM KELLEY

The same name but not the same soil, very stony here. A fine fresh mid purple. Altogether finer than the village wine with a racy quality through the middle of the raspberry fruit, the limestone seems much closer here. Medium length in the classy finish. JASPER MORRIS MW

Alexandre Brault Monthelie Les Riottes 1er Cru 2020
I sometimes think Monthelie reds are a forgotten member of the Burg family. So often they can provide so much immediacy and enjoyment and often for a fraction of the cost of a wine from neighbouring Volnay. This is no exception. Turned earth, amaro herbs frames juice and nicely ripe rep and black fruits. The spice element from judicious oak use is also a lovely addition and theres a trail of tannins that afford the wine freedom without sacrificing form. MICHAEL MCNAMARA

The NV Brut Rosé is flat-out delicious. The word 'balance' is so overused in wine, but I really can't think of a better way to describe the Brut Rosé. 29. Pol Roger Brut Vintage 2018
    Pol Roger Brut Vintage 2018

The 2018 Brut Vintage is absolutely delicious, just as it was last year. Floral and citrus notes give the 2018 lovely aromatic lift to play off its mid-weight personality. This is a classy, polished Vintage Champagne marked by notable brightness. Airy, elegant and silky in feel, the 2018 is an absolute delight. ANTONIO GALLONI

Pol Roger's 2018 vintage is showing many of the fine facets of the year upon release already, open and giving in style with roasted pear, ripe apricot and grapefruit skin, lightly creamy and developing richness in pecan and brown pastry. The Pinot Noir leads, relatively structured for the year while showing hints of the smoke and spice to come with further age. A wine that flows with some of the ease and charm of 2018, but that promises a fairly early – if rewarding – unfolding in bottle. DECANTER

Made from 60% Pinot Noir and the rest Chardonnay and pouring a vibrant silver/yellow color, the 2018 Champagne Brut Vintage (like all these wines) was aged in stainless steel without any oak. In the glass, it opens to springy and dewy floral aromas of honeydew melon, fresh flowers, citrus blossoms, and pastry dough. Medium-bodied and inviting, it’s approachable now and takes on a more mineral character on the palate without ever feeling austere. All its components move seamlessly through the palate, with a refined mousse and a kiss of sunny feel on the finish, but it’s clean and refined all the way through. This is going to improve with age, but it’s quite enjoyable now. Drink over the coming 15 or so years. It was made exclusively from Premier Cru and Grand Cru villages, was aged for 6 years on the lees JEB DUNNUCK

The 2018 Brut Vintage, with a dosage of seven grams per liter, exhibits a delicate bouquet of ripe orchard fruits, pineapple, peach, sweet spices and pastry, followed by a full-bodied, rich and elegantly creamy mid-palate that segues into a fleshy core of fruit with a penetrating, long and saline finish. Admirers of Pol Roger’s style will love it. WINE ADVOCATE

Pale lemon with a lively and persistent mousse and an attractive nose of Spring flowers, hawthorn and apple turnover, a hint of iodine too. Subtle, the wine is composed yet incisive, fresh and yet profound, with orchard fruit and a citric cut shaping the palate, and notes of verbena and sourdough in support. Expertly crafted and forthright, without indulging to excess, the 2018 is poised and confident but far from brash and with a clear potential to evolve gracefully. The wine broadens beautifully with a little time in the glass, with hints of honey and biscuit evidenced, and will do so equally impressively in bottle over the next five years and beyond. Domaine de la Cote Estate Pinot Noir 2022

The 2022 Pinot Noir Estate is a more red-fruited, tobacco leaf-tinged, herbal expression of this classically dark-fruited, saline-driven western Sta. Rita Hills estate site. The palate combines elegance, precision, ripeness and stuffing, transitioning to a concentrated yet pure and lifted finish. This is a fittingly beautiful entryway into some of the most serious yet approachable wines of Santa Barbara County. WINE ADVOCATE

The 2022 Pinot Noir (Sta. Rita Hills) is airy, gracious and understated. Dried herbs, mint, crushed flowers, cedar and tobacco all run through this perfumed, layered Pinot. The floral and savoy style is so typical of these wines. Aeration brings out lovely mid-palate richness and pliancy to round things out. There's plenty of charm and immediacy here. ANTONIO GALLONI

A little iron in the soil here. North-east of the appellation, near Clos Myglands and La Framboisière. Plain south-facing, the soil a little red from the iron.
Ooh - now that's a beauty - a more sophisticated width of complex and attractive flavour. In the mouth - fresh and energetic - really complex - a little more blocky from the tannin today - this will also benefit from your patience but the finishing flavour, working its way through the tannin is completely delicious. Really a personality here. Very good but with much potential to improve. BILL NANSON

Certified biodynamic. Light to mid crimson. Smells of little wild cherries, open and expressive. Firm and chewy texture holds all this lovely fruit in shape. Complete, satisfying and full in the mouth yet still very fresh. Needs time. JULIA HARDING

A notably more floral-suffused nose features distinctly earthy and ripe aromas of various dark berries, especially cherry, along with hints of kirsch and the sauvage. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the beautifully textured, if not particularly dense, medium-bodied flavors that exhibit moderate warmth and rusticity. This firmly structured effort is borderline old school in style though with that said, it offers excellent potential for a villages-level wine. OUTSTANDING, BURGHOUND

A bright yellow color, the 2022 Chardonnay Wester Reach is a textbook example of this vintage, with a lot of elegance and a wide drinking window. From the Russian River Valley and aged in 25% new oak barrels for 11 months, it takes on more glycerol richness and a rounded profile. A great wine out of the gate, it captures the sunny feel of the region, but it's light on its feet and closes with a great finish. Paolo Vodopivec, his winery and six hectares of densely planted Vitovska are located in Carso, a plateau of shear limestone tucked between the border of Slovenia and the Adriatic Sea. Vodopivec was inspired by Josko Gravner. Like him, Vodopivec ages most of his wines in subterranean Georgian Amphora, followed by refinement in large neutral oak and a long stay in bottle before release. The results must be tasted to be believed. These are some of the top white wines being made in the world today, like cool-mountain air and liquid stone encapsulated in a bottle, yet with rich textural complexities that boggle the mind.

Crushed rocks and dried flowers give way to peach skins and chamomile as the 2019 Vitovska blossoms in the glass. This is pure and lifted in style, graceful and finessed, quickly gaining a salty tension as young pit fruits and lemon nuances mingle. A salty flourish and flinty sensation come forward through the finale, adding a savory flair as the 2019 finishes with lasting concentration. So youthful today, the 2019 should age beautifully in collectors' cellars. ERIC GUIDO, Vinous

Anne & Sebastien Bidault Morey St Denis Les Porroux 2022
Blue florals, turned earth and a sanguine edge to the aromatic which follows onto the palate. Compared to the Gevrey it's more open and giving; sweeter attack of fruit which works it's way into a more supple and slippery texture on the palate. Lovely, old fashioned Burgundy - in a very good way. At the price, a super bargain. MICHAEL MCNAMARA

  46. Pommery Apanage Brut 1874 NV
    Pommery Apanage Brut 1874 NV
The first impression is of a bewitching bouquet of white flowers, with hawthorn and jasmine coming to the fore. This subtle harmony is supported by notes of ripe citrus fruits such as Sorrento lemon. These refreshing aromas gradually open up to more complex, toasty flavours of acacia honey, marshmallow and brioche. After a smooth, delicately buttery attack, this champagne reveals notes
of white nectarines, balanced by elegant freshness and the natural minerality of the terroirs from which it is made. The heart of the tasting, with its velvety texture, expresses the richness of the flavours and the complexity of the layers in the blend. The finish is full-bodied and long-lasting, enhanced by notes of citrus zest which round off the panoply of flavours.

The Pommery tradition of preserving blends in reserve vats under the name of Perpetual Reserve has been systematised for the new Apanage Brut 1874 range. In keeping with the historical work on 17 crus, Apanage Brut 1874 builds its backbone around villages in the great historic terroirs of Champagne, selected for their character and uniqueness:
    • Côte des Blancs: from Cramant to Bergères les Vertus
    • Montagne de Reims: from Bouzy to Ecueil, via Verzenay
    • Grande Vallée de la Marne: from Mareuil-sur-Aÿ to Fleury-la-Rivière, via Aÿ-Champagne
    • Les Clos Pompadour

Predominance of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the very best origins, enhanced by the great Meuniers from the Montagne de Reims and the Grande Vallée de la Marne.

  48. Vilmart Grand Cellier NV
    Vilmart Grand Cellier NV

The NV Brut Grand Cellier is fabulous. Rich, ample and creamy, the Grand Cellier is so alluring from the very first taste. All the Vilmart signatures - most notably uncommon elegance - come through loud and clear. Baked apple tart, pear, spice and a hint off butter add nuance, but it is the wine's overall feel that impresses most. Readers will have a hard time keeping their hands off this seductive Champagne from Vilmart. ANTONIO GALLONI

Light, bright gold. Heady, complex scents of poached pear, vanilla, anise and pungent flowers. Fleshy but focused and pure, offering vanilla-accented orchard fruit and lemon curd underscored by chalky minerality. Finishes long and toasty, with lingering florality and noteworthy clarity. JOSH RAYNOLDS

A blend of 30% pinot noir and 70% chardonnay, this has a complex and sophisticated nose that delivers peach fruits and citrus, plus some bolder yellow plum fruits too. The palate is assertive, energetic and concentrated with peach and nectarine flavors met with lemony acidity. Long, really powerful Champagne here. JAMES SUCKLING
