  1. Dormilona Clayface Chardonnay 2023
    Dormilona Clayface Chardonnay 2023

No oak at all as Clayface is an amphora wine; the fruit is basket pressed to a single Italian amphora. This started out shy on the aromatic front, even if the palate came out textural and seductive. It’s worth decanting so that all the aromas and flavours are revealed: stone fruit, dabs of Meyer lemon and preserved lemon, too. The palate is invigorating, with ginger spice, galangal, and there’s a tanginess offset by a light layer of butter/cream, but oh-so light. It’s complex, energising and different. Yup, minuscule quantities. (95) JANE FAULKNER, Halliday Wine Companion

Matured in clay amphora from gooder bits of good vineyard in Margaret River.

This has some mojo. Succulent texture with a rub of granitic chew, elements of terracotta and briny savouriness amongst peach, nectarine and cumquat sweet-sour tang. Exotic in a way, but pleasingly so, very even and well balanced in flavours, evocatively perfumed and generally, wildly drinkable. Lots of charm and x-factor here. Keen. Yabby Lake Single Vineyard Cuvee Nina Sparkling 2018
Traditional method, 47/44% chardonnay/pinot noir with 9% reserve wine from ’12. Three years on lees, dosage 4g/L and disgorged January ‘21. It has the perfect amount of complexity – think brioche with lemon curd with a touch of aldehydes – to the brightness of apple and stone fruit within. While it comes across with a richness of flavour, it’s crisp and refreshingly dry. JANE FAULKNER, James Halliday

  3. Joshua Cooper Chardonnay 2024
    Joshua Cooper Chardonnay 2024

From the Dash Farm's vineyard which is also a single vineyard wine, designate, but here done in a slightly different style.

Slick and spicy, savoury and tangy with lots of crushed rock minerality, a dash of white balsamic tang, loads of preserved lemon, crystalline gingery spice. It's flavoursome, rich in a way, but also holds shape in a cooler frame though it touches medium weight too. A lick of Jura chardonnay, hey. Character filled, compelling drinking, a chardonnay not afraid of flavour but happy resting in a space that feels cooler and brighter too. Apple, cashew, almond, pulpy grapefruit, cumquat, cinnamon. Go forth, this is super drinking. (95) MIKE BENNIE, the wine front

  4. Dr Edge Chardonnay 2024
    Dr Edge Chardonnay 2024
A blend of chardonnay from the Derwent and Tamar Valleys; hand-picked, direct press to 50/50 French oak barrique/clay amphora, wild ferment, nine months on lees. Gorgeous grapefruit and lemon lead, followed by hints of white peach, gentle spice, crushed stone, clotted cream, clover blossom, meal and lemon curd. Such a harmonious wine with a brilliant composition, dreamy fruit profile, a decent lick of umami and that wonderful stony Tasmanian acidity. What a ripper! DAVE BROOKES, Wine Companion

"Savoury style here, and it’s pretty much all about the texture. Green pear, oatmeal, white mushroom, lemon with honey, almond, chamomile and green olives in brine. It’s chalky and gently chewy, a lively bite to green apple acidity, tangerine juiciness, but also has some nutty richness, plenty of zip and energy, with an umami-laced finish of excellent length and grip. Distinctive. Excellent wine. Yum. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

  5. Pike Road - By Elk Cove Chardonnay 2021
Pike Road - By Elk Cove Chardonnay 2021

Golden Delicious apple and sweet Elberta peach aromas encircle the head, with a touch of thyme and spicy cinnamon basil. This is a crisp, lighter-bodied Chardonnay that delivers white peach, lime and saline flavors on a laser beam of acidity. It will be difficult to resist a second glass. Best Buy. MICHAEL ALBERTY, wineenthusiast.com

Spiced nectarines, honeycomb and saline notes allude to its underlying ripeness. On the palate, it's ripe yet constrained by a savoury scaffolding of spicy oak. Earthy notes of wet pebbles and seapsray add to the wine's texture and flavour profile. The finish is pulled together by a lovely line of fine and chewy phenolics, adding to the tension and energy. 6. Le Cinciole Chianti Classico 2021
    Le Cinciole Chianti Classico 2021

The 2021 Chianti Classico is a fabulous introduction to this range from Le Cinciole. Brisk acids and veins of tannin give the 2021 its shape and plenty of overall energy. Expressive floral and savory overtones lend tons of character. The 2021 was vinified in cement and aged in cask for a year, followed by a year in cement. This mid-weight Chianti Classico is a winner. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous

A juicy, vivid and crunchy Chianti Classico expressing aromas of strawberries, raspberries and mild spices, following through to a medium body with fine tannins. Succulent and crisp with sour cherry character in the mouthwatering finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink now. JAMES SUCKLING

A potent nose of maraschino cherries, black plums and ferrous aromas lures you in. The palate is awash with dark cherries tempered by earthy tones. A curtain of tannins slowly tapers off, bringing balance to this soulful Chianti Classico. It's a delicious medium-bodied style which is drinking beautifully in its youth, but has the bones to age exceptionally well. GABRIELLE POY

  7. Francois Carillon Cap Au Sud Chardonnay 2021
Francois Carillon Cap Au Sud Chardonnay 2021
Plenty of weight here which comes as a lovely surprise the first time you take a look at it. Hits the ripe stone fruit and slightly exotic register but with air it tightens up significantly and turns on the southern charm. Fleshy, nice volume and intensity, no lack of freshness but this nails the succulent and juicy mark, offering up all the bits you want from a great Chard that drinks like it was made for the table. Upfront and loaded up with pleasure on all fronts. Southern Chard made by a master from Burg and it shows. Well played. This is should be on your highlight reel for summer. I particularly like flesh and richness here, it straddles the line between buxom and zippy, so much fun in the tank. Just a dead set lovely wine that is ready and raring to go. ROSCOE

Floral with notes of white flowers, elderflower and concentrated fruit, Fresh picked nectarines, sweet chamomile, nashi pear, quince and citrus rind. There’s an abundance of bound ripe fruit, Anjou pear, yellow peaches, red apple skins and citrus curd. Fresh acidity and gentle phenolics envelope around the rich fruit core of the wine. It’s elegant in style, showing a fresh and clean finish. The wine is supported by mineral characters of crushed seashells and coastal salinity that are, for the time being, gently hidden beneath the rich fruit power of the wine, waiting patiently to expand as the wine evolves in the bottle. Savoury red that delivers good verity to the variety, wonderful tannin and refreshing qualities. Excellent news. MIKE BENNIE

  21. Rocca di Montegrossi Chianti Classico 2021
Rocca di Montegrossi Chianti Classico 2021
The 2021 Chianti Classico is a model of excellence. Pure, bright and wonderfully vibrant, the 2021 possesses superb energy and exceptional balance. Crushed red/purplish fruit, rose petal, sweet spice and orange zest bristle with tension. This is a rare Chianti Classico I would cellar for a year or two. Superb. ERIC GUIDO

Rocca di Montegrossi is located in the heart of Chianti Classico, about seven kilometres from Gaiole. The name comes from the historic fortress that was built during the Longobard period (600-800 AD) by Geremia, ancestor of the Ricasoli–Firidolfi family, and destroyed in 1530. Marco is part of the Ricasoli family that wrote the story of Chianti Classico, creating the formula for the wine we know today at the site of what is now his San Marcellino vineyard.

The estate covers 60 hectares, of which 18 are under vine and 20 with olives trees. The vineyards are situated on gently sloping hills that are calcareous origin, at between 300-450 metres and planting densities range from 3,300 vines per hectare in the old vineyards to 5200-6200 in the new. The soil is very rocky and just planting a vineyard here is costly exercise thanks to the work required to break the ground but the flip side is that the vines are forced deep into the soil and yields are naturally low.

  22. Salo Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2023
    Salo Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2023

From the Full Moon Vineyard in Gladysdale. Wild ferment and 100% mlf. There's only one wine from winemakers and friends Steve Flamsteed and Dave Mackintosh, and it's always a good 'un. A bright green gold. There's aromas of ripe stone fruits together with some savoury and complex briny notes. On the palate, this has lots of flavour and punch, finishing long with a refreshing touch of grip. Delicious now and over the next 4–6 years. (95) PHILIP RICH, Halliday Wine Companion

One forgets the longevity of something that seems to have great energy behind it, but this is the eleventh year that Salo has worked with this fruit from the Full Moon Vineyard of the Southern Hills of the Yarra. Wild ferment, old oak, unfined, unfiltered, minimal sulphur. A cool and wet start to the season, low and slow growing reflected in the wine somewhat.

A quiet and gentle chardonnay of suppleness, creamy flow, soft citrus fruit characters, red apple sweet-sourness and a lick of almond, nougat and vanilla in the mix. An undertow of barely there but refreshing saline acidity does a nice trick too. This feels very even, subtle in its general sense and yet persists beautifully and with freshness with each sip. Classy, understated and delicious. MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Fron

OUSTANDING. TOP VALUE. Based on the nose, this could be from nowhere else but Chablis with its quinine, petrol, oyster shell, lemongrass and algae scents that are trimmed in just enough wood to merit mentioning. The rich, sleek and solidly concentrated medium weight flavors possess excellent intensity as well as an abundance of sappy dry extract that buffers the firm acid spine supporting the clean, dry and youthfully austere finale where a touch of rusticity eventually appears. This is an excellent Chablis villages and recommended. BURGHOUND

The grapes for this wine come about 82% from our own block in Mitch Patin’s Lloyd Vineyard on West Soda Rock Road planted in 1998 towards the southern end of Alexander Valley on the banks of the Russian River. 11% comes from the Larrick Vineyard that we farm, and the remaining 7% is Malbec from J. Rickard in Cloverdale.

As always, this wine was produced more like a Pinot more than a Cab. Fermented in open-tops with native yeasts, punched down by hand, and racked to barrels before being aged in 2nd fill French oak barrels for 15 months.

    Kenzie Waiohinganga Chardonnay 2022

Grown on deep alluvial river sands and stone left behind by the Esk River, vines experience a maritime influence where warm, dry days are followed by a cool sea breeze.

Handpicked fruit was wholebunch pressed direct to 500L puncheons with full solids. 10% of which was new French oak. After a few days, wild fermentation spontaneously started and progressed for 20 days with a maximum temperature of 24 deg C.

Post fermentation the wine was stirred a few times and left to mature at cool and allowed to go through full Malolactic Fermentation. Stirring every 3- 4 weeks. Minimal sulphur was added after 5 months. After a total of 9 months of barrel maturation the wine was racked to tank for bottling. No fining or filtration.

  30. Fraser Gallop Estate Parterre Chardonnay 2022
Fraser Gallop Estate Parterre Chardonnay 2022

I see the Chardonnays from this season being quite nutty, and certainly texturally wide, which follows the conditions of the season. The wine is floral-particularly chamomile-with lashings of crushed nuts and red apple skins, jasmine and crushed shells, a hint of wisteria and shortcrust pastry. The acidity remains true to the house style here, which is verging on austere, certainly incredibly juicy, penetrating and spicy. Beautiful. 12.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. (96) ERIN LARKIN, Wine Advocate

Nose is shy at first, then opens out to fine spice, sea foam, poached green apple, lemon curd, a flint-laden mineral lift and a hint of fresh peppercorn. The palate sings with fruit intensity and tightly strung Gingin acid, both of which bode well for time in the cellar. A delicious Chinese greens crunch and a frame of fine, voluminous fruit carefully wrapped in top-notch oak. (95) DECANTER

A riper vintage has only added more fruit definition to an otherwise savoury and super-fine wine. Some moreish sulphides tease the richer flavours of creamy curd-like lees and spicy, slick oak, with the fruit hovering between lemon, grapefruit and makrut; mouth-watering acidity too. This has verve and detail. (95) JANE FAULKNER, James Halliday's Wine Companion

The wines under this label have been quite a revelation in recent years. This one from the excellent '22 vintage is another cracker. It's a precise and elegantly crafted wine with a steely minerally core. Aromas of pear and quince paste with a little citrus tang. The palate has a slightly crystalline minerality with a lingering finish. Has a distinctive sea spray talky character which is most appealing. (95) RAY JORDAN

I Sodi Chianti Classico Riserva 2019

The 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva gives you bang for your buck. The bouquet is busy and fun with black fruit, olive, smoke and pencil shaving. There is quite a bit of oak spice and tar and it's almost too much of a good thing. This Riserva finishes on a lean and polished note. MONICA LARNER, wineadvocate.com

A saturated purple/magenta color, the 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva is ripe and brooding with layered aromas of fresh leather, blackberry, lavender, and thyme. Fleshy and full-bodied, it retains fresh, mouthwatering acidity, with a note of saline earth, a rich core of concentration, and ample, plush tannins with a fleshy texture. First poured, a ghastly apparition appeared – as if this had been placed in a corset and cinched tight. In a vinous sense, that means decanting or letting this beauty breathe in the glass. It has all the varietal appeal of Margs: its shapely tannins, supple and ever-so-slightly grainy and its savouriness. A Rodda Willow Lake Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2023

A lovely mix of nectarines, apple danish and white button mushrooms pique the senses. With air whiffs of crushed rock and smoked meats appear. The core is awash with flavours of stone fruits and pomme fruits, earth and spice – layers build upon each other. This is a sophisticated and stylish chardonnay that doesn’t reveal its hand fully – it plays a cat-and-mouse game. Subtle oak spices remain deferential to the core of finely etched fruit. A fine framing tail of acidity and phenolics signs off. Very stylish indeed. GABRIELLE POY

Complex and highly lifted aromas of citrus blossom, Meyer lemon and white nectarine combine with gun smoke and freshly grilled nuts. The palate is soft and full yet refined and complex, driven by fine acidity that flows into a creamy, velvety texture. The finish is round yet precise leaving a sensation that is long and moreish. 40. Hay Shed Hill Block 2
    Hay Shed Hill Block 2

BLOCK 2 on the Hay Shed Hill vineyard was planted in 1975 to the Houghton clone of Cabernet Sauvignon. These old dry grown vines have sunk deep roots into the gravelly loam soil profile providing the nutrient basis they need. Block 2 has a steep northern facing aspect maximizing the sunlight interception by the vines providing ideal ripening conditions.
COLOUR: Dense dark red to black colour of great intensity.TASTING NOTES: Ripe berry aromas of great intensity with underlying dusty and earthy characters. There is depth to the nose indicating there are reserves of complex aromas yet to develop. The palate is substantial with intense and fully ripe, fleshy sweet fruit filling the mid palate with great palate extension driven by the ripe and mature tannin. The mouthfeel is robust but the tannins are smooth.CELLARING: This is a strong wine with ripe tannin and strong fruit depth indicating it will benefit from careful cellaring. The expectation is that the wine would benefit from 10 years of maturation. HAY SHED HILL

The 2021 Chianti Classico Berardenga is boisterous and expressive right out of the glass. Dark fruit, earthiness, leather, spice and tobacco convey tons of Castelnuovo Berardenga character. The 2021 keeps getting better in the glass. It's a super-classic example of the house style and a wine readers should consider buying by the case. The Berardenga bottling can be a bit wild, but in 2021 has an added touch of sophistication that is undeniable. ANTONIO GALLONI

This is really energetic with an excellent fruit and acid balance that gives the wine a tangy finish that lasts for minutes. Medium to full body. Lovely depth with sliced ripe green apple flavors and hints of hot stone. Hints of bread dough and steel gives this complexity. Flavorful finish. (95) JAMES SUCKLING

Syrahmi Garden of Earthly Delights Chardonnay 2021

It walks to the beat of its own drum and it does so successfully. Lemon curd, wheat, honeydew melon and assorted floral notes work in with earth, bran and cedar. If you called it kaleidoscopic you wouldn't be exaggerating. It's not thick with flavour (it's relatively lean), but everything here both spreads and gathers. It's quite grippy too, which isn't for everyone but it works here, picking up on the wine's inherent presence. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, Wine Companion

STAFF PICKS 2024 -  LACHLAN CUFFE

For a couple of years now we've been hearing from the team at Querciabella about how good the 2021 vintage was. Well the wine finally arrived a bit earlier this year and we are not disappointed. Incredibly fresh and vibrant with classic red cherry and rose petal notes. The fruit is beautifully ripe without being over the top and the wine is simply a joy. As good as any Chianti Classico I've tried this year. LACHLAN

The 2021 Chianti Classico is fabulous. Bright and punchy, with terrific resonance, this wine shows just how compelling the vintage is. Readers will find a Chianti Classico of dynamic energy and volume. Dark red cherry, purplish fruit, lavender, rose petal, spice and a gentle kiss of French oak build into the sumptuous, vibrant finish. Superb. The 2021 was aged in 500-liter barrels (5-6% new) for 14 months and is a blend of fruit from Greve, Gaiole and Radda. ANTONIO  GALLONI, Vinous

This has a fresh character with ripe cherries and raspberries as well as dried flowers, bark and stones. Polished and textural with a medium body and vivid acidity. Focused and fresh with chalky tannin structure and a linear finish with notes of citrus and minerals. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. JAMES SUCKLING

A saturated purple/magenta hue, the 2021 Chianti Classico is lush and fresh with aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, violet, and fresh leather. Plush and inviting, with bright acidity along the sides of the palate shining through, it offers a velvety texture with a long finish. It’s polished but not oaky and has a very refined feel, with medium to full body and a long and balanced finish. Drink 2026-2040. JEB DUNNUCK

This red is precise, offering cherry, raspberry, rose, iron and tobacco flavors fused to a steely, dense and vibrant structure. Balanced and intense, building to a long aftertaste infused with fruit and mineral notes. Best from 2026 through 2045. BRUCE SANDERSON, Wine Spectator

    Domaine Naturaliste Purus Chardonnay 2023

Feeling tired and sluggish? A glass of this pure, racy Purus will bring spark back into your life. It’s more than the refreshing acidity, which is moreish and energising, there’s a light film of citrus and white stone fruit, a little spice, a very fine layering of texture and oak. Superb balance and length. Love it. (96) JANE FAULKNER, Halliday Wine Companion

Bright and lively in the glass. Lifted aromas of grapefruit pith, just-ripe white stone fruit, white flowers, mineral and nutty oak. Concentrated, fine and balanced in flavour. Peach, nectarine, citrus and crunchy acidity are all at play. The finish is dry and grippy and the length is impressive. Tightly wound at the moment and will benefit from cellaring. AARON BRASHER, The Real Review

Purus. Karridale. Dijon clones 76, 95 and clone 5. 40% new oak.

White peach, grapefruit, spicy clove and ginger oak, green olive and fennel, white flowers. It’s a tight wine, distinct green olive and lime rind bite, a little sour yoghourt, and quite some acidity here, a powdery chalky texture, with an olive brine savoury finish of zip and good length. It’s shelly and maybe sits on the cusp of ripeness, though it does have energy, and, I feel a bit of upside given a few more years in bottle. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front
