Little Goat Creek is a real place in the heart of Marlborough’s Wairau Valley grape growing region. The creek flows from the Richmond Ranges of Marlborough into the Wairau River and this water in turn feeds the fertile land that produces Marlborough’s famous grapes.

Callie has grown up with wine in the blood. It was family holidays to Chianti in Italy, and tasting’s at Louis Roederer in France that sparked a serious passion in Callie from a very young age. Having studied psychology and criminology at Melbourne University, and qualifying as a chef it was the lure of wine and more so vineyards that she just couldn’t resist. She’s now studying wine making at Charles Sturt University, and has already worked at some A-list wineries, including De Bortoli in the Yarra Valley, Littorai Wines in California and Fattoria Zerbina in Romagna.

This is a smashing combo of classic Alsace and northern Italian style grigio. Bursting with Apple, pear, some honeysuckle spice, and a hint minerally goodness too that you don't often find at this level. It's the lighter side of mid-wright packed with crispy fruit and plenty of it the focus to a fine, citrus-driven fresh with lots of crunch and energy. The quintessential drink don't think wine.

60% Syrah 25% Cabernet Sauvignon 15% Grenache, They say “perfect with your favourite wood-fired pizza (hold the pineapple)”,  though I like pineapple on pizza. Gino D’Acampo would have conniptions.

Plenty of flavour of red and blue fruits, bay leaf, a dusting of spice. Medium-bodied, quite fleshy, some earthy/sooty tannin sweeps through it, with a soft and supple finish of blue fruits and spice. Length is moderate, but OK. Good wine. Easy to like. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

Enlists all of grigio's strongest varietal trademarks from the gentle blush colour and scents of pear, honeysuckle and apple to the savoury nod on the palate, crisp acid flow and touch of salty almond to close. Made by sommelier-come-Italian wine rep-come Italian wine tragic, James Scaresbrook, his renditions of Italian varietals are some of the most convincing you will find. That's not to say I like them because they're mimicking the Italians. Nup, not at all, and in fact the fruit spectrum generally shows it's antipodean origin. Through intelligent winemaking techniques (often observed in his own travel in Italy) he brings texture and aromatic complexity to these varieties. It's a recognition of how these varieties work with food and transports them from dry white and red wines to something with altogether more interest.

A recent appointment trying through his range only highlighted what good things James is doing. His wines are all on point with thougtful winemaking inspired their homes in Italy but not dogmatically so. James is happy to changed tact here or there if he sees something not working or vice versa if a wine is expressing itself in a way he likes but moves away from his original idea hes is not afraid to let it do its thing.

A bit of a dearth of Balnaves reviews in recent years, and indeed, Coonawarra too. 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot

Blackberry and blackcurrant, dark mint chocolate, liquorice, tobacco and cedar. It’s pushing into full-bodied, but gee, there’s a rich swell of dark fruit here, and it’s also kind of ferrous/earthy, but fresh and vibrant with it, some dried raspberry, firm and grainy tactile tannin grip, sporting excellent length, and there’s maybe a bit of iodine to close. Quite possibly the most delicious Pobblebonk to date. Riesling, friulano, pinot grigio and ribolla gialla are the friends, each fermented wild in used French oak, on full solids and later blended. It’s heady with meadow flowers, lemon blossom and hints of lemon verbena, really spicy with nutty, leesy aromas, and the palate is both textural and alive with fine acidity. Light to mid straw colour in the glass, the bouquet savoury with some nutty notes possibly from barrel ferment, adding layers to the floral and spicy fruit aromas. Deliciously intense fruit on palate with a touch more dimension than the Quealy pinot grigios. It's truly more than the sum of its parts. How do you make a melange of fruity, bitter and salty so perfectly? So easygoing, delivering the goods, not stingy on flavour, not pushy with perfume. Just right. Lightly honeyed, with pink rock salt to balance, crunch of pears and cashews, with a cooling aniseed to finish. Textural but smooth. Simply yum. Nailed it. Sauvignon Blanc of the Year. Score awarded by the Halliday tasting team at the annual Awards judging. SW writes: Fermented in stainless steel tank (52%) and older oak (48%). Aged on full lees with no battonage. Pineapple, guava, perfectly ripe mango skin and lilikoi. Driving and elegant natural acidity and a wash of juicy tropical fruit with hints of glacé ginger and nutmeg spice. A fuzz of nettle texture and the wine finishes quite full bodied. It's a sauvignon blanc made with care, attention to detail and purity of fruit. (97) WINE COMPANION TASTING PANEL
 
This must be one of Australia’s top sauvignon blanc wines. And the value is pretty epic.

It’s got exceptional energy and persistence, a major feature is the tension in the wine, the torque of powdery pucker and the core of briny minerality. Around this, preserved lemon, a faint ginger lift, almond, attractive parmesan cheese characters, salt bush and gentle white pepper. It’s a compact and yet flavoursome white, refreshing as it is interesting and intellectual for the fanciers of fine sauvignon blanc. Cellar some too. MIKE BENNIE, Wine Front
