A splash of malbec makes its way into this wine. Succulent and refreshing red, bright with blueberry and mulberry fruit character, some violet floral lift, minty herbs, clove, black olive and licorice. A feast for the senses in the scents. The palate rolls similarly, supple and bright in texture, medium to fuller weight but lively and energetic with each mouthful. PWS Thank You Fortified 500mlFor those of you who may remember we used to have 3 big barrels of fortified wines out the back of the store where you could re-fill your own bottles, or buy from us, a selection of Stanton & Kileen Muscat, Topaque and Ruby Fortified. After many years these bottlings fell out of favour and with room growing to a premium at the store we got rid of them.
But what to do with all that wonderful sticky goodness? The juice was too good to just pour away and we really had a bit of a soft-spot in our heart for these wines. In jumps crew at Stanton & Kileen help us out with our little conundrum. They expertly blended the 3 fortifieds together with a little fresh stock from their own holdings and worked a little magic at the same time. The result is the PWS Thank You Fortified.
This is such a magical combo or red fruits blended with spicy muscat florals and a hint of earl grey tea. It's beautifully luscious and sweet like a muscat but a dollop of strawberry and raspberry fruit elevate the nose with a little twist on the traditional fortified. Delicious!

Balnaves Cabernet Merlot 2021A bit of a dearth of Balnaves reviews in recent years, and indeed, Coonawarra too. 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot
Blackberry and blackcurrant, dark mint chocolate, liquorice, tobacco and cedar. It’s pushing into full-bodied, but gee, there’s a rich swell of dark fruit here, and it’s also kind of ferrous/earthy, but fresh and vibrant with it, some dried raspberry, firm and grainy tactile tannin grip, sporting excellent length, and there’s maybe a bit of iodine to close. Y.amirault Amirault Bourgueil Cote 50 2022The old La Coudraye, which changed to La Côte back in the 2018 vintage to reflect the variety of origins for the fruit. This is a sample drawn before bottling. A vibrant hue in the glass, and a beautifully pure and eager nose of black cherry, blackcurrant and damson fruits. The palate remains true to the nose, with that same sense of purity and an underbelly of soft chalk, before a sappy cherry-skin character at the end. Modestly extracted tannins, firm but not over done, with nice acidity for this warmer vintage, this should evolve nicely for some years, but should be ready to go within a year or two. Trinity Hill The Gimblett Bordeaux Blend 2019Aromas of dark berries and hay, tobacco and gravelly soils, there’s a core of concentration and power with new oak and violets, red berries and energy. Pioneiro Moscatel Roxo NVMy love of fortified wines is no secret, in fact I am loudly proclaiming it to any and all who are willing to listen (usually that's a small group admittedly). This is a new one for me and it is one hell of a wine. Burnt fig, orange peel, walnut, black tea and a hint of fish oil all intermingle on the really complex and decidedly enticing nose. Mount Horrocks Cabernet Sauvignon 2022From biodynamically (certified) grown vines. This switches things up for the general character of Clare Valley cabernet wines, lighter, brighter, frisky almost, lots of greenery and peppery spice, almost minty elements in dark chocolate, cassis, boysenberry characters to taste. There's a crispness to the wine, bright and lively, the herbaceous notes leading the way but not totally defining the wine. Fine, light tannins hold court. The perfume matches the flavours, a big fog of freshness, herbal detail and almost a sense of 'purple' if synesthesia is your thing. Prieure Lichine 2018 375ml
The 2018 Prieuré-Lichine is gorgeous. Bright and racy in the glass, the 2018 impresses with its magnificent purity of fruit. In 2018, Prieuré-Lichine has terrific energy and cut. It is perhaps a bit less creamy than the 2016, but also impeccable in its balance. Part of that is driven by the higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend in 2018. The 2018 Château Prieuré-Lichine is an attractive, elegant Margaux offering classic, pretty red and black fruits, cedary spice, and dried flowers aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied, elegant, and again, with an incredible floral character, it has a supple, rounded texture that's going to allow it to drink nicely in its youth, yet it should also evolve for 15+ years or more. I am totally in love with this product! Why? Because its flippin delicious! Pinot Based vermouth from the man behind Allies David 'Chappy' Chappman. He has just nailed it with this bright, bitter, summery drink. The subtle sweetness is beautifully balanced against the bitter citrus notes and the whole thing just sings.
