Petit Pittacum Mencia 2022We have been enamoured with the mencia based wines of Spaces northwest since first we tried them. Their beautiful lifted nose spiked with mineral accents that flowed onto graceful pallets raked with fine granit like tannins an earthy savouryness at the edges. They are something akin to cru Beaujolias crossed with the finest reds of the loire and we just cant get enough.
Bodegas Pittacum is owned by the Terras Gauda operation and is situated in Argaza in the heart of Bierzo and made from grape sourced from small plots of organically grown 90 year old vines grown in clay soils on steep slopes.
Glace fruits with crème de mure and raspberry coulis flecked with granitic mineral shards. Mid weight styling come from slippery red fruits and a gentle burst of freshness that comes not from acidity but from a deep mineral vein soaked up from the long roots and rocky slopes. Its like a bowl of mixed berry smashed onto rock and is absolutely delightful. If you have not had the wines of the region or mencia this is a belter of an introduction.

Monte Ronca Colle Marianna Soave 2023The wines of Monte Ronca and Colle Marianna are the creation of local specialist Antonio Fattori, based in the commune of Ronca, in the heart of Garganega country. His family began as Soave producers, and a little over 100 years ago they bought a 12-hectare property on the eastern edge of the Valpolicella denomination, where the vineyards cover the ridge dividing the Alpine Valley and Illasi Valley at elevations of close to 500 metres.
Made from 100% Garganega planted in the basalt vineyards of Monte Calvarino. The fruit was picked at the end of September, crushed and fermented in 85% stainless steel and 15% large format casks. At 450 metres, Garganega can only just reach ripeness, so this is where a small amount of appassimento fruit works well (around 10%) to add flavour and texture while holding its cooler structure. The wine is charmingly floral on the nose, with notes of peach and green almond. Cesar Marquez Parajes del Bierzo 2022César Márquez Parajes is a coupage of the most prestigious and unique Bierzo plots. Old vines grown as they used to be, without using pesticides or chemicals that can damage the natural balance of the terroir. Each of the plots is worked separately according to their needs and the harvest is carried out manually.
In the winery, 50% of the grapes used to make César Márquez Parajes are destemmed. Then they are pressed in the old-fashioned way, with feet, so that some of them stay whole during fermentation. Fermentation is spontaneous with the grape’s native yeasts. Once the must becomes wine, it is pressed and placed into 225 and 500 litre barrels separately. After 12 months the barrels are emptied and the different wines are combined.

Pieropan Soave Classico 2023Leonildo ‘Nino’ Pieropan, who sadly passed away in 2018, was the first to show the world just how great Garganega, and Italian white wine, can be. He recognised the importance of terroir early on, acquiring various hillside vineyards (including Pigno, Becco, Boiolo, Tondo, Palestrello and La Santa) and expanding the prestigious Calvarino and La Rocca vineyards, first made as single vineyard crus in 1971 and 1978 respectively.
Today, sons Dario (winemaker) and Andrea (viticulturist) continue the family tradition. The brothers have converted all of their vineyards to organic and are overseeing the new winery being built amongst the vineyards just outside the village.
Mostly Garganega with about 10-15% Trebbiano di Soave, this is wonderfully aromatic - not a common feature of Soave - with floral notes (cherry blossom), citrus, stone fruit and almond. The palate is delicate and focussed, with excellent depth and lovely overall balance.

Suavia Soave Massifitti 2020The Suavia winery has captured my attention over the last few years. Run by three sisters and located within Soave Classico, Suavia produces a portfolio of terroir-driven wines that impress for their depth and undeniable elegance. Year after year, I find the Monte Carbonare to be one of the best interpretations of this vineyard. This is also one of the few estates producing a varietal Trebbiano di Soave in the region. The Massifitti is the first wine here that caught my attention.
Wickedly fresh, the 2020 Trebbiano Massifitti bursts from the glass with a mix of savory herbs, dried flowers, gingery spice and dried peaches. It’s round and soothing, with a salty core of minerality and depths of tart orchard fruits and citrus tones, all guided by brisk acidity. The Massifitti finishes long, leaving a lemony concentration that puckers the cheeks—wonderfully balanced and begging for further cellaring. Le Battistelle 'Battistelle' Soave Classico 2022Le Battistelle is simply one of the Soave Classico’s best producers. They have some of the most incredible hand tended terrace vineyards with vines up to 130 years old. There are records of the Battistelle vineyard going back to 1644. Fantastic volcanic subsoils plus the estate is classified “Viticoltura Eroica” or Heroic Viticulture which appears on the label of the Battistelle cuvee. It stands for the hard work that production of these wines requires.
Owned by Gelmino and Cristina Dal Bosco who after working for larger co-operatives in the region passionately wanted their estate, and started in 2002 under the Le Batistelle label. They own just over 9 hectares (100% Garganega) divided across four small plots all situated in the hills of Brognoligo.
The 2022 Soave Classico Eroica lifts from the glass with a savory blend of dried peaches and apricots, complemented by hints of fresh mint and crushed stone. Gloriously perfumed and so enticing. You could wear this as a perfume. People would think you are nuts, but you would smell amazing! Big, super concentrated, it hits your mouth with intent, absolutely engulfing the palate with the same heady array of character that is suggested on the nose. So much weight and richness but there is the sweep of uplifting acidity that washes away any lingering sweetness and leaves your palate feeling refreshed and enlivened. Long and stimulating across its length with a final flourish of citrus like acidity and fine saline edge. This is a wonderful bottle of wine that had me coming back to it over 24 hours or more. Wow, is it salty or is it sweet? The 2017 Recioto di Soave Le Colombare lifts up with dusty yellow flowers, dried tangerine and orange zests complemented by crushed almonds and hints of confectioners' sugar. It's silky-smooth yet not weighty in feel, with zesty citrus and tropical fruits motivated by brilliant acidity. The balance here is unreal, as the 2017 hides its 120 grams of residual sugar very well, maybe too well, making it easy to like but also dangerously easy to drink. Yeringberg Marsanne Rousanne 2016Marsanne 59%, Roussanne 41%. Our white Rhône blend is a subtle wine that displays restraint and quiet power. It starts subdued, with hints of pear, honeysuckle, lanolin and quince. With air it expands, building depth and breadth, showing notes of honey, lemon and jasmine. On the palate, it's both taut and well rounded, savoury and subtly pithy, but also spicy and gently viscous. It's a fabulous food wine that manages to complement both delicate and more fully flavoured dishes and, unusually, satisfies both white and red wine drinkers. Algueira Mencia Ribeira Sacra Risco 2019Merenzao is the same variety as Trousseau (and Bastardo in Portugal) and was probably brought to Ribeira Sacra by the Cistercian monks who set up camp here in the Middle Ages. Algueira’s Merenzao vines have an average age of 80 years and are rooted in a steep slope of gneiss, quartz and slate in the Amandi Gorge. The fruit sees a wild yeast, 100% whole-bunch ferment, is pressed by foot and aged for 12 months in old oak and some local chestnut vessels.
The result is an extraordinary, unique wine with a complex perfume of finely detailed fruit characters that recalls wild cherry steeped with blood orange, rose and a tincture of wild herb. There’s more colour and muscular density from the solar year, yet it remains super lucid and tender and finishes long, leaving behind a lick of elegant tannin and a perfume of sweet red berries and smoky minerals. This is one tasty Bastardo!
