Vibrant and bright on the nose, showing good fruit, a lifted peppery note and minerals. Fresh and al dente with medium to full body. Crunchy, vibrating tannins. So juicy, pristine and long. The complexity comes from the fruit and the tension. A blend of tempranillo and graciano. From just 0.95 hectare of vines planted in the 1960s. Drink or hold. (98) ZEKUN SHAI, jamessuckling.com

The 2023 El Escolladero is a blend of 85% Tempranillo and 15% Graciano from Paraje El Meadero in Ábalos, Rioja, where the Miguel Blanco family owns the vineyard. Intensely aromatic, it opens with violet, lavender, pink grapefruit and dark fruit against a primary fruit backdrop. This is juicy and full-bodied, with a fine, chalky texture and notable depth. It is a long-lasting and expressive 2023 in the producer's hallmark style-voluminous yet weightless, with a layered fruit profile and agile flow. (96) JOAQUIN HIDALGO, Vinous.com
