Western Victoria Tasting
Victoria's western reaches are a patchwork of varying microclimates and soils covering a vast geographical area known as much for its spectacular scenery as it is for some of the country's greatest producers. From the Pyrenees and Grampians out to Henty and of course, the aptly named Great Western region, some of the most sought-after and historic wineries call this beautiful countryside home.
Shiraz and cabernet feature strongly here and the likes of Bests, Seppelt and Mt Langi are household names with long and illustrious histories producing benchmark wines from their hallowed hills. Each sub-region stamps the wines with a unique flavour and aroma profile that is influenced as much by the varying soils and ever-changing aspects and climates, as it is by a bevy of the country's best and most experienced winemakers and their guiding hands.
While the reds are undeniably the stars of the show riesling in the region
continues to make inroads with the likes of Henty and its surrounds producing
some of the country's best examples of this varietal. Chardonnay and other
'alternative' varietals are also growing in popularity while the next generation
of winemakers and producers are slowly making themselves heard. It's clear the
region has so much more potential to reveal and we are excited to see what it
has in store.

Crawford River Beta Sauvignon Blanc Semillon Museum Release 2016Naturally fermented in French oak and aged on lees, Beta brings great nuance and savouriness to the usual blend of sauvignon blanc and semillon. Golden Delicious apple, quince, melon, lemon barley and light grassy herbals mix and bind together nicely on the palate, enhanced by an almond mealy creaminess and clean acidity. Drinking well now. JENI PORT, James Halliday Wine Companion
Sauvignon blanc and semillon and spends times in oak barrels on lees.Supple and slippery, long and with good concentration balanced to zippy freshness. Scents and flavours of stone fruits, ginger, cracker biscuits and toasty, sweet spice. A reserved wine in a way but you seek out all those layers of character. Pretty serious, in its way. A complex and superbly balanced medium white wine. MIKE BENNIE, The Wine Front
