Welcome Casa Rojo

We are stoked to welcome to the portfolio the wines of Casa Rojo. This Spanish wine collective - for lack of a better word - was established by husband-and-wife team Jose Luis Gomez and Laura Munoz in 2009. Both are winemakers who early in their careers traveled the breadth and depth of the Spanish wine world and who in the late 2000's finally began to work on their dream project. A project that allowed them to make wine outside of the usual limitations of regional boundaries and family ties that so often permeate the landscape of Spanish wine. Somewhere where they were able to express themselves through Spain's greatest terroirs and most classic varietals drawing on both their own experiences as winemakers and by surrounding themselves with like-minded folk.

Within only a few years the savvy duo started to get noticed both locally and abroad with their collection of playful wines and whimsical labels that delivered not only exceptional quality but highlighted the incredible diversity of Mediterranean climates and Spain's exceptional wine-making heritage. They focused on wines made from varietals and regions they had fell in love with while traveling across Spain calling them The Wine Gurus. In 2014 they were named as part of the "100 Best Wineries in the World" by Wine & Spirits magazine.

Shortly after in 2015 the team finally set roots in the unique Paraja de La Raja region, a dreamy and fertile valley located between Sierra del Carche and Sierra de La Pila, in the Altiplano of the Murcia Region. After years of frenetic oenological activity, constant learning, and traveling Spain's every corner to find the best regional expressions of grape and site they would establish phase two of Casa Rojo here, expanding on the range and establishing their own viticultural family heritage within the hills of southern Spain.

Fast forward to today and they own 23 hectares of monastrell, garnacha and syrah of which they make wine from locally while managing nine projects across Rías Baixas, Valdeorras, Bierzo, Rueda, Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Priorato, Cava and Jumilla. They have teamed up with some of the country's best establishing valued relationships with growers, farmers, and winemakers who share their passion for creating wines that go beyond passing trends and commercial whims. Wines that are authentic and unique, indelibly tied to the land they are grown and the people that grow them.

Perhaps one of the wines that highlight their ethos the best is the Las Vinas Bastardas, a wine made from a collection of vineyards and sites scattered throughout the Murcia highlands and labeled as IGP Tierra de Murcia. When the DO for this region finally arrived delimiting geographically those plots that were in and those that were out, it left out many of those amazing vineyards with no classification and no origin despite their rich viticultural heritage. Casa Rojo selected and harvested those very same vineyards understanding that it was more important to express the land and the vines than follow a set of arbitrary rules laid down by the Do regulators.

In an industry dominated by large and powerful groups, Casa Rojo offers an innovative and groundbreaking vision for the wines of Spain. They have concentrated their efforts on the south-west and western regions of Spain with a particular focus on the wines of Ribera Del Duero and of course their home turf in Murcia. They have a range of excellent monastrell, garnacha, and tempranillo based wines as well as some fantastic drops from Rueda and a brilliant looking albarino from Raias Baixas.

Casa Rojo La Vinas Bastardas Red Blend 2020

A mix of high altitude vines and  unique terroir with poor lime and clay soils, united to extreme weather conditions and dry agriculture that provides low yields and high concentration in the fruit. Spends about 5 months in French oak.

Glace cherry and red fruits overlay a bed of black currant and blackberry fruits with a soft peppercorn spice and a touch of licorice. So vibrant and fresh that builds slowly with a mix of wild forest fruit and grilled herbs. Fine tannins cut the sweet fruit and a gentle kiss of oak gives it all a last little push on the long finish

  2. Casa Rojo Ribera del Duero Tinta Fina Tempranillo 2019
Casa Rojo Ribera del Duero Tinta Fina Tempranillo 2019

100% Tinto Fino, from the towns of Villálvaro, Sotillo de la Ribera, Moradillo, Hontoria, Peñafiel, Quintana del Pidio, Anguix and Curiel de Duero. Average altitude of 850 to 900 meters, all in the province of Burgos and Valladolid. The grapes come from old vineyards between 35 and 100 years old. In French oak barrels for 428 days, having undergone malolactic fermentation in barrels for 10% of the final blend.

Smashed red and black fruits with that blue-note hit and spicy oak to top it off and little highlights of smokey, leather notes make for a heady and complex nose. Again, plenty of concentration for the mixed, wild berry fruit profile but never at the lack of freshness or energy. Firm but plush tannins grip the black fruits plastering them to the palate and driving home to a full and rich finish. Definitely see some oak here but it suits the style perfectly. PWS

Earthy, underbrush aromas with hints of fig, raspberry compote, cherry and herbal overtones. Bursting with red plum, spice and a mouthwatering layer of sour fruit. Peppery tannins and a toasty, warming finish. DECANTER

  3. Casa Rojo Machoman Tierra de Murcia Monastrell 2020
Casa Rojo Machoman Tierra de Murcia Monastrell 2020

Big fan of Jumilla Monastrell, there's great Monastrell made in Spain, with a ton of character. This particular Monastrell; concentrated with red and dark berries, balanced with a touch of chocolate and savoury components. Great wine and food pairing!  NICK CAPEL, PWS SYDNEY

A heady nose of raspberry licorice, scorched earth and sweet spices lures you in. Waves of black cherry, black plum and raspberry flood the palate before moving into dried herbs and earth and leather flavours thanks to some bottle age. The array of intoxicating flavours and depth-defying intensity is a nod to its premium standing and old-vine source, caged within bitter chocolate tannins that are silty and fine. A delicious dark remedy for the onset of winter. PWS

Deep violet-red in the glass, this wine has aromas of dark fruits of the wood, dark chocolate and dried thyme. A wall of rigid tannins supports purple plum, cassis, mocha, anisette and herbs de Provence flavors. The slightly stiff finish is marked with notes of crumbled sage and olive paste.
