The Big Orange
Orange wine. It's such a burgeoning category in the world of wine and here in Australia the demand for wines of this type just keeps growing. It’s an incredibly popular style and one we get asked about on a daily basis. So much so, that we thought it was about time we put on a tasting to explore this seriously diverse and ancient style.
So, what is it? For those that may not be familiar, we are not talking about wine from Orange in NSW or wine made from oranges. Simply it's white wine made with skin contact to bring out colour, texture and weight to the finished wine. The time on skins gives the wines a wonderful golden orange hue which can range from fairly light to some real serious glow. It also adds captivating textural elements, flavours, and aromas that make it so unique, and in the right hands, an incredibly complex and moreish wine style
While its popularity is relatively recent its roots go back far into the wine-making world with its origins traced thousands of years to Caucasus or modern-day Georgia. It has since found a firm home in Italy’s north-eastern reaches and bordering Slovenia and today is made all over the world.
There are so many examples these days both local and international with an incredible array of divergent styles throughout. This is a fascinating look into the world of orange wine with a range of classic and contemporary styles.
