Taste Of Tassie 2024

You might suggest that it is no great secret that Tasmania is making great wine, but it may surprise you how far up the bar is being raised every year. We are continually impressed by the wines coming across the tasting table each release and it's not just about pinot and chardonnay. Sparkling, gris, riesling, syrah and many other varietals are impressing with each taste and each sip and we are always on the lookout for that next wine to rouse our interest.

While established stars like Freycinet, Stefano Lubiano and Clover Hill have firmly made their mark the last decade has seen a number of younger and smaller winemakers and growers strut there stuff. The Pooley clan have firmly established themselves as one of the greats of the state while Glaetzer-Dixon has had the foresight to see all the potential of this wonderful and captured it beautifully in their bottlings. This of course is just a small shortlist of excellent wineries making their way and we are enjoying every step of the ride.

And while there is no doubt of the bright future and the already incredible winemaking prowess coming out the Apple Isle we will continue to look towards Tasmania as climate change continues form and re-form this landscape in both literal and metaphorical terms.

In the meantime we can enjoy a smorgasbord of vinous treats while we look on.

Willie Smiths Pommeau de Tasmanie 18.2%

Aged in small apple brandy casks for over 12 months, this rich and generous liqueur is a result of blending pressed French and British heirloom apple varieties with our apple spirit.

Complex and well-structured with baked apple and spice, balanced with firm tannins and cask influence.

Our take on the traditional aperitif from North-West France – enjoy as such or serve with blue cheese or dessert. WILLIE SMITH

  2. Marco Lubiana Pinot Noir 2022
    Marco Lubiana Pinot Noir 2022
Two-thirds Huon Valley and one-third Derwent Valley fruit matured in 15% new French oak. Bright ruby with finely detailed aromas of red cherry, wild strawberries, raspberry coulis and some blueberry crunch. Hints of forest floor, gentle exotic spice and amaro herbs, mushroom broth and roast duck off in the distance. Plenty of space and detail on the palate with a lovely fruit purity, a stony presence, bright acidity and compact tannin framework. It makes for beautiful drinking now but will reward cellaring.
