Staff Picks 2023
It's always exciting to see who has chosen what for their wine of the year and this long running institution never fails to deliver with some very cool drops. Once again, this year's line-up looks fantastic and shows what an eclectic set of tastes the amazing team at Prince have.
Sydney is coming hot out of the gate with three great wines from Spain, Italy and closer to home in the Barossa with the Machoman monastrell, Le Cinciole Chianti Classico and Alkina Knight Sky GSM respectively. Effie may have the value pick of the year with the Domaine Naturaliste Discovery chardonnay while Matt our master of dispatch has gone straight to the top with the Forman Napa Valley cabernet.
Both Roscoes and Gab have made about a thousand changes but finally fallen on a couple of stellar wines. Roscoe with the phenomenal St Damien Gigondas and Gab going off the beaten track a little with the Marco de Bartoli Lucido catarratto. The wholesale boys have slam dunked it with Rocher des Violettes Touche Mitaine chenin blanc and one of our favourite rizza's of 2023, the Frankland Estate Alter Weg.
Chenin looks to be a popular choice this year and we will see whether Kayleen's Milton Te Arai chenin will beat out Johns Rocher Viollette. That one will be one tough competition! Myles has gone with a little Langhe love and the Mauro Veglio 'Angelo' nebbiolo while Aleksander has put up one of the teams favourite Aussie chardonnay producers and the Ada River chardonnay from Patrick Sullivan. Of course, what would a tasting be without a cracking set of bubble and the Bellebonne Rose 2020 rightly holds its place as the number one local bubbles of the year. A fantastic choice by Bellota's Megean Shreuder - we love these wines!
Lucky last, owners Michael and Alex are bringing it home with two stunning showings. Michael, lover of all things Italian has chosen the 2020 Rizzi Nervo Barbaresco. This single site stunner is from what is bound to be one of the region's most sort after producers in years to come while Alex has dropped the mic with one of the USA's finest in the Cristom Mt Jefferson pinot noir. This had us all oohing and aahing with joy when it finally landed this year and we are so proud to represent both these fine producers in Australia.
We hope you enjoy trying these wines as much as we enjoyed putting this list together. It's a stupendous selection from all around the globe that will have you covered from everyday tipple to prime-time party stunner.
Enjoy!

Alkina Night Sky GSM 2022A great rendition of this wonderful blend. Dark Cherries and plums with spice notes. The fruit is ripe, but very bright and the tightly wound structure opens up beautifully with air. SARA TORRES, PWS SYDNEY2021Mourvedre, shirazAustralia349$55.00 -
Casa Rojo Machoman Tierra de Murcia Monastrell 2020Big fan of Jumilla Monastrell, there's great Monastrell made in Spain, with a ton of character. This particular Monastrell; concentrated with red and dark berries, balanced with a touch of chocolate and savoury components. Great wine and food pairing! NICK CAPEL, PWS SYDNEY
The grapes are from 13 plots of Monastrell vineyards in La Raja (where the winery is located) between the mountain ranges of El Carche and La Pila. The vines range from 20 to 70 years old sitting at 800 metres, within the wine region D.O. Jumilla, in the south of Spain. Steel tank ferment with 5 months in small French oak.Red licorice, pastille fruits, and a hint of charry savouriness and scorched earth layered in with sweet, heady spice. Black cherry, black raspberry fruit paint the palate then slowly melt away to reveal spice box and savory herbs then rushes back in with plum, blackberry compote, blueberrie, and blackcurrant that bring the finale to a luxurious finish that trails off with some dark chocolate, and tobacco.

Forman Cabernet Sauvignon 2020Cabernet …… who drinks Cabernet anymore? I mean we can't all hang out in exclusive "Gentlemen's Clubs in Mayfair" can we?
So I was super surprised when I had a chance to taste an older (2018) vintage of the Forman Cabernet a few months ago which was superb - so I couldn't wait to have a crack at the new vintage. California cabernet - all big, juicy and ripe fruit….. right? Nope - definitely not. There were layers of blueberry fruit, dusty chocolate, coffee bean, black cherry - and lovely hint of sweet spice and graphite minerality. Also a hint of oak supporting the rich - but definitely not over ripe - fruit. With a little time in the glass fantastic savoury notes popped up … think sage, bay leaf all adding wonderful complexity and interest to the wine.
This wasn't an over ripe jammy new world Cabernet … nor was it an austere/mouth puckering Bordeaux - just a wonderful balanced wine - drink up! MATT O'CONNOR, PWS
The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon is a powerful, deep wine that marries elegance and finesse in a way few people can do, like Ric Forman. Rich and sumptuous in the glass, with terrific depth, the 2020 has so much to offer. Black cherry, mocha, licorice, spice, incense and new leather are all dialed up. Although it is early, this 2020 is shaping up to be one of the finer wines of the year.
ANTONIO GALLONI, vinous
The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley has to be seen as a success in the vintage, revealing a solid bouquet of red and black fruits, tobacco leaf, cigar, and toasted spices. These carry to a medium to full-bodied Cabernet with a good sense of balance, moderate tannins, and outstanding length. It's well done and should evolve for another decade at a minimum. I followed this bottle for multiple days, and it always showed well. JEB DUNNUCK2020Cabernet SauvignonUSA446$295.00 As low as $265.50 -
Correggia Barbera Bricco Marun 2019This is a classy single vineyard barbera. From 45-65 year old densely planted vines, the Marun was the brainchild of Matteo Correggia. He sourced fruit from sandy soils at the top of the hill with a sunny exposition and good air flow to stifle vine disease.
The 2019 Barbera d'Alba Superiore Marun is packed with scents of blackberry, underbrush, mocha, licorice, leather and cloves. There's plenty of density and volume, and yet forward aromas and flavors lead me to believe the 2019 is best enjoyed sooner rather than later. ANTONIO GALLONI2019BarberaItaly457$69.00 As low as $62.10
