Produttori Del Barbaresco Barbaresco DOCG 2020

Produttori del Barbaresco is not only one of Italy’s most admired co-ops, but one of the very best producers of Barbaresco. This reputation has been earned by the constant high quality of its output… WALTER SPELLER, JancisRobinson.com

Aldo Vacca has deftly brought the Produttori del Barbaresco into modern times while making subtle changes to farming and winemaking yet maintaining the traditional style that has made this coop so adored by its rabidly loyal fan base. The changes at Produttori have been gradual to the degree they aren’t always so noticeable, but they are there. No one knows every nook and cranny of Barbaresco better than Aldo Vacca, but Vacca has also proven to be incredibly wise in making choices that have positioned the Produttori for much continued success in the future. I can’t think of too many wines that deliver this much pleasure and value. ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous.com

I feel like I've written this line a dozen or more times since I started working with these wines 25 years ago... Produttori del Barbaresco is the greatest co-op on the planet earth. A remarkable place formed by a local priest to help producers find a market for their grapes at a time in the post-war era when this area was poverty stricken and its farmers destitute. Buying their fruit gave them a lifeline, a livelihood and a reason to stay when countless were leaving for the cities.

That was in the 1950s and since that time PdB's influence over the direction and fortunes of Barbaresco has been profound. The enduring loyalty of those growers has meant they have often had the pick of the greatest plots in the zone, while at the same time they have had a generational talent as winemaker in Alda Vacca, making drop-dead gorgeous nebbiolo - redolent of place, accessible in style, enlightened traditionalism at its best.

The DOCG Barbaresco is one of the most anticipated releases in the world of wine each year. Yes, the single-site riserva wines are keenly sought after, but the Barbaresco - sourced from those sites and others - is a "banker". I can't remember a wine under this designation from this producer that hasn't been simply excellent to exceptional. The 2020 comes out of a great vintage for the region. As Antonio Galloni noted in his review of the vintage, it is

the 2020s are beautifully balanced. The wines show mid-weight structure and a fine sense of harmony

Right there you have a spot summation of the Produttori 2020 . It's deliciously pliant, expressive of the variety and holding all the requisite nebbiolo aromatics and earthen flavour-profile.

???Vacca employs simple fermentation for all the wines letting the unique terroir of the region speak. His great talent as a winemaker is to know when to let go and let the wine speak for itself, so you won't find over extraction or heavy handed oak, you'll just great a textbook example of nebbiolo and all that entails including pure aromatics, medium body and lithe texture tethered to powdery tannins.

Cheers
