Luigi Oddero And Praeter Masterclass
I'm about to send you through that list but I'd also like you to be our
guest to a small masterclass featuring the wines of Barolo star, Luigi Oddero.
The masterclass will be co-hosted by Matt Large, Aussie winemaker who spends his
off-season at Oddero helping craft these exceptional wines. As well as talking
us through the range of Oddero wines (some airfreighted specially for the night)
he will show a few of his own wines, Praeter, which come from fruit sourced in
Barolo or from the Adelaide Hills where he is assistant winemaker at Shaw &
Smith.
Luigi Oddero may be a new name to some of you and in some ways the estate is new, however the Oddero name is one of the most famous in the Langhe Hills with fabulous holdings since the late 1800s. In 2006 brothers, Giancarlo and Luigi decided to split the original Oddero estate and its vineyards and, Lugi Oddero was born. In 2009 Luigi died suddenly leaving his widow and children to continue to grow his dream. They have done just that and, I feel that today they are on the cusp of a huge breakthrough in the wine media. They already have the vineyards that most give a kidney to own, and they have one of the most talented winemakers in Francesco Versio. You may remember that I offer his own wines from his family estate in Barbaresco. He learnt his trade at Bruno Giacosa under the great Dante Scaglione. The wines are excellent.
About Praeter
While winemaker Matt Large was working for Shadowfax's Macedon Ranges project some years ago, he got bit by the Nebbiolo bug. After exploring options, Matt found an incredible role working alongside ex-Bruno Giacosa winemaker and all-round Barolo/Barbaresco rockstar, Francesco Versio at Figli Luigi Oddero in La Morra in Piedmont. Francesco was so impressed by this talented young winemaker, that he offered Matt a recurring vintage role at Figli Luigi Oddero who own real estate in some of the Langhe's most famous crus. This stint acted as the impetus for Matt to start his own label, Praeter wines on returning to Australia after his first vintage in 2017 - a label that is the embodiment of Matt's learned winemaking know how in both the Langhe and Australia.
