The 2020 Barolo Gattera is a dark, at times somber, La Morra Barolo. Black cherry, plum, lavender, licorice, dried herbs and mocha all meld together. Pliant and deep, with notable concentration and breadth on the palate, the Gattera is a fine example of this site. Today, the 2020 is a bit closed, but I see that as a positive. ANTONIO GALLONI

Rinaldi’s 2020 Barolo is a fine choice for drinking now and over the next handful of years. Deep and quite potent, the 2020 offers tons of depth, complemented by hints of tobacco, worn-in leather, dried cherry and crushed autumn leaves that argue for near- and medium-term drinking. Alluring aromas recall ripe berry, wild rose, vineyard dust and culinary spice. The palate is firm but elegant, offering crushed raspberry, tart cherry, licorice and a dollop of vanilla supported by taut, fine-grained tannins. The 2020 Barolo Giachini comes across as quite closed today. The aromatics are expressive, and yet the wine feels much more reticent on the palate. Sweet red cherry, leather, pipe tobacco, cedar and dried flowers open with great reluctance. It will be interesting to see if time in bottle helps this come together a bit more fully. The 2020 Barolo Mosconi is a powerful, savory wine. Black cherry, gravel, incense, menthol and licorice all build in this virile, strapping Monforte Barolo. The E. Pira e Figli - Chiara Boschis 2020 Barolo Mosconi has some of the extra ripeness of the vintage with cherry cream syrup, grenadine, watermelon candy and a drop of Pastis. The wine ends on a powerful note with a balanced combination of fruit and fine oak tannins. The palate is very alive, and the fruit feels very vibrant at this young stage. The 2020 Barolo Margheria is a very pretty wine that shows the gentler side of the year. Dried herbs, menthol, incense, new leather and licorice all take shape in the glass. The 2020 Barolo Ginestra Vigna Sorì Ginestra marries finesse with power, as can happen with the best sites here. Crushed flowers, orange peel, spice, mint, white pepper and tobacco lend notable aromatic presence.
