DJs 2022 Burgundy Showcase Tasting

2022 is an amazingly consistent vintage. I tasted almost no poor wines. Everything was good to very good, with occasional touches of greatness.
JASPER MORRIS, Inside Burgundy

What will time tell from a vintage like 2022 in Burgundy? It's hard to say at this early stage now but one thing is for sure: in our minds, we are loving what we see. While it was back to a warmer season than the very classically styled 21s the lush fruits and warm palates are balanced by an overall freshness and vitality that give them so much early charm. The whites in particular are looking fantastic and we are excited as more of these land.

The other takeaway alluded to by Jasper Morris above is the fantastic consistency that 2022 looks to have produced. From top to bottom of the food chain there is so much to enjoy from the vintage and with smarter winemaking and grape growing becoming the norm we have been blessed with a raft of beautifully drinking Burgundy to enjoy.

So, with all this great wine coming across our desk and hitting our shores we thought it best to pick some of our favourite producers and wines from 2022, gather them up, and get you all along to see the lay of the land.

Domaine de Bellene Bourgogne Rouge Maison Dieu VV 2021
A very pretty and highly expressive nose reflects notes of various red berries and plenty of earth character that can also be found on the supple, vibrant and delicious middleweight flavors that conclude in a mildly rustic if nicely persistent finale. BURGHOUND

Domaine Chanzy Bourgogne Pinot Noir Les Fortunes 2022
Le fortunee- fruit is from 4 lots (1 in Bouzeron and 3 in Mercurey) Darker fruits, spice, blue and black fruit to the fore. Fleshy, ripe, pleasing pithy tannins, some nice warmth to the palate too. Bit of mid-pallet fruit push that is spiked with dark roast spice and earthy notes. Nice generosity but still snappy.

Domaine Buisson-Battault are consistent producers of first class Burgundy. Made by traditional methods, these wines really express the true characteristics of the region. JASPER MORRIS MW

100% Meursault fruit from two small lieu-dits (Les Clous Perrons and les Magnys) with vines dating back to 1951.
This is a baby Meursault by nature. All the fruit comes from Meursault with some lovely old vines adding intensity and complexity. A delicious overachiever, it lures you in with notes of white nectarines, honey and wet stones. There’s lovely depth to the fruit that’s lassoed together by a minerally tension and fine chewy quince-like phenolics on the finish. This is open and ready to devour, it’s an irresistible Bourgogne blanc. GABRIELLE POY

Domaine de Bellene Coteaux Bourguignons L'Eclos des Abeille Chardonnay 2022
Attractively spicy aromas include those of green apple and plenty of citrus wisps. The racy, delicious, detailed and nicely textured flavors exude a subtle minerality on the mildly austere, refreshing and inviting finish. This isn't especially complex but it's so vibrant that one feels like drinking it. BURGHOUND

  5. Domaine de Bellene Bourgogne Rouge Maison Dieu VV 2022
Domaine de Bellene Bourgogne Rouge Maison Dieu VV 2022

Ripe deeply pitched aromas include those of pungent earth, various dark berries and whiff of spice. The delicious, caressing and supple middleweight flavors possess a relatively refined texture for what this is though it contrasts with the slightly rustic finale...it is a quality Bourgogne. BURGHOUND - OUTSTANDING TOP VALUE

2022 yielded a ripe and fruity, polished and approachable Bourgogne rouge from domaine vines, supple, plush and immediately engaging. I love the balance achieved, the fluidity on the palate, the seamless acids intermingled with very fine-grained tannins. Length is excellent. Very refined and sophisticated wine, one that delivers well above its humble appellation, and drinking well even now, though cellerable into the late '20s without concern.
