Chateau Coutet Masterclass 2024

Coutet has been one of my go-to sweet wines of Bordeaux since I first plunged into my wine career. It is a Barsac wine that always seems vivid and electrifying thanks to the brocade of life-affirming acidity engendered by its limestone soils…Aline Baly is a dynamic woman who communicates the château’s wines better than anyone in Sauternes. NEAL MARTIN

Although Coutet went through a dull patch in the 1970s and 1980s, it is now demonstrating that it is capable of producing wines of extraordinary quality.  It is often compared to Climens, and usually to Coutet’s disadvantage. But the wines are different: Climens has more weight, more majesty; Coutet is racier, and dances into the future with a lighter step. STEPHEN BROOK, The Complete Bordeaux

The prestigious Château Coutet located in Barsac, Bordeaux, is renowned for producing some of the regions most exceptional examples of this elixir of the Gods.

The Château's history dates back to the 13th century and is one of the oldest estates in both the Sauternes and Barsac appellations, with a rich heritage of wine production. The estate is situated on clay-limestone soil, which is particularly well-suited for the production of sweet wines. The unique terroir, combined with the influence of the nearby Ciron River, creates ideal conditions for the development of noble rot (Botrytis cinerea).

The incredibly labour intensive process sees grapes harvested by hand in multiple passes through the vineyard to ensure only the best botrytized grapes are selected. This strict selection results in wines fames for their intense complexity, richness, and balance.

Trying any wine from this fames estate is a delight and one look at the long list of awards and accolades Coutet has received over the years seals its reputation as a top-tier producer whom is widely regarded as one of the top in the Sauternes and Barsac regions.
