By Farr Old

Father Gary and son Nick Farr have merged their businesses, although the two labels (By Farr and Farr Rising) will continue. The estate plantings of pinot noir, chardonnay, shiraz and viognier cover the varieties made under the labels; wines from other regions fall under the Regional Dirt Banner. The combined production represents an even split for each of the two brands. The Farrs make exceptionally complex Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the Shiraz and Viognier equally meritorious. JAMES HALLIDAY, The Australian Wine Companion 2013

There’s a truth to wine in that some vintage years are so perfect that almost anyone can make a decent fist of them and turn out a good wine. But the best exponents make really good wines from the toughest of conditions. The 2011 vintage across south-east Australia was, for most producers, one of the toughest vintages in decades…
But as for the 2011 pinot noir range from By Farr, they are different, almost unusual. It’s clear they were grown in a cool, wet year. But so too are they edgy, and persistent, and characterful, and fascinating. They are not crowd-pleasing wines – these are wine-lovers’ wines. You taste them and know, for sure, that Nick Farr has the family estate humming. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front 2013
