Brown Bag Shiraz Tasting @ PWS David Jones October 2025

PWS at David Jones are delighted to host Alex Head of Head Wines in Barossa, for a tasting of three new releases exclusive to Prince Wine Store (outside of Alex's wine club). We are very excited to be supporting a long time friend of PWS and showcasing his terrific wines.

Alex's affection for the wines of the Rhone, particularly Cote Rotie, are notable even amoung Barossa vignerons - convinced that Eden Valley is home to the 'roasted slopes' of Barossa, he is pushing the boundaries (in a well established region) of terroir and site expression with wines that burst with artesan 'soul'.

  1. Coursodon St Joseph L'Olivaie 2020
    Coursodon St Joseph L'Olivaie 2020

The 2020 Saint Joseph L'Olivaie comes from a parcel of 60-year-old vines. It's a winner, offering a rocking array of black and blue fruits, crushed stone, pepper, and flowers as well as medium to full-bodied richness on the palate. With plenty of mid-palate depth, ripe yet present tannins, and a great finish, it will give a top Hermitage a run for its money. JEB DUNNUCK

The medium to full-bodied 2020 Saint Joseph l'Olivaie, tasted out of barrel-the final blend will be roughly 50% from pièces de Bourgogne and 50% from demi-muids-showed an enthralling blend of raspberries and olives, a sexy, silky mouthfeel and great length and freshness on the finish. Yann Chave Crozes Hermitage 2021
An intense and animal nose with dark cherries, smoke, grilled meat, game, wet earth, bark and loads of cloves. The palate is medium-bodied with silky texture and fine tannins. It’s restrained and juicy with control and elegance that contrasts with the intense nose. Crunchy finish with bright acidity. From organically grown grapes. Drink now. JAMES SUCKLING

Tasted blind. Youthful and primary with a delicate sweet violet and crushed blackberry nose. A soft palate with moderate fruit concentration – spice, violet, zesty acid and attractive fruit. Lightweight and easy early drinking. JANCISROBINSON.COM

  4. Seppelt St Peters Shiraz 2022
    Seppelt St Peters Shiraz 2022

Released in small quantities and only in exceptional years, St Peters is Seppelt’ s flagship shiraz, testimony to the distinctive style and pedigree of Grampians shiraz. The lineage of this iconic wine dates back to 1964, when ‘great western hermitage’, as it was then known, was first made. Since 1998 this wine has been called St Peters in honour of the first vineyard planted in the region.
NOSE A fragrant blend of blackberry and blueberry fruit, licorice, violets, bay-leaf and spice are further complexed by a subtle flint and cordite nuance. PALATE A wine of incredible power, line and finesse that belies its medium body. Upfront silky blackberry and blueberry fruit marries with black pepper, river rock and spicy black olive, complementing subtle mineral gunflint notes and charry oak. Regional graphite tannins focus the wine and provide a framework on which it will comfortably age and develop in the decades to come. SEPPELT GREAT WESTERN
