Bordeaux 2022
The high points of the vintage touch the sky. Two thousand twenty-two
witnessed the birth of legendary wines and unbeatable value-for-money, if it
isn't just a label that gets endorphins rushing...The 2022 vintage serves as a
timely reminder that when Bordeaux fires on all cylinders, it is
untouchable...At their pinnacle, mon Dieu, I really love the 2022s. Those that
shone in barrel tend to shine in bottle. This is a vintage with a range of
"snow-capped peaks." These are wines that foment euphoria, a handful with
perfection in their sights. Allow me to quote the musical analogy from my barrel
report since it sums up the style of the vintage. The 2022s are not warbling
Neil Youngs. They are Freddie Mercury strutting the stage. The best will rock
you...
The best wines of 2022 deliver sensational aromatics. They lean
toward opulence, thankfully without the overbearing, slightly blowsy nature of
the 2018s and, further back, 2003s. Crucially, the elite retain or even heighten
delineation. It is as if you can pick each scent individually, like listening to
music through a high-end audio system. Often, one finds floral traits of violet
and iris flower, though these will ebb with time as the DNA of respective
terroirs comes through. The levels of freshness are occasionally
breathtaking....These are quite intense wines that deliver purity of fruit and
quite plush and pliant tannins, often mouth-filling wines that satiate the

Readers can refer to my earlier En Primeur report, where I called 2022 an incredible, singular vintage. Now that the wines are in bottles, it's clear they have fully lived up to the early hype-and not just at the high end. The 2022s are deep, layered, and concentrated while staying beautifully balanced, light on their feet, and elegant. This is an extraordinary vintage that will go down in record books as one of the all-time greats. JEB DUNNUCK
As to the vintage, the hype is real. I know that Bordeaux has a
reputation for marketing hyperbole but I can tell you first-hand after tasting a
swathe of '22 Bordeaux in Paris last month that this is a vintage that you are
not going to want to miss. As Galloni says above "The high points of the vintage
touch the sky" with an incredible marriage of pure, opulent fruit, soaring,
detailed aromatics, lithe tannins and surprising freshness. 2022 was another
warm modern vintage but if you were expecting wines that bore the muscle and
gruff tannins of the 2010's, or the over-ripe fruit that plagues the 2003s, you
won't find them among the best wines on offer. It seems in Bordeaux, with their
deep pockets and continuing investment in the management of vineyards and
cellars, they are now simpatico with weather conditions of the modern age. It's
incredibly impressive to see how in 2022, the wines' big personalities are
incredibly met with fruit purity, balance and poise. ALEX

2022 the vintage summary by Fiona Morrison Master of Wine -
2022 is a miraculous vintage. It was the year that the vine
showed its resilience to climate change and adapted to both the heat and the
drought that were present throughout the summer, to make elegant, fresh, fruity
wines that often showed the best of the terroirs in which they grow. We have
never seen anything like it!
To quickly sum up the weather patterns: A
period of cold weather in January allowed the vines to become dormant so they
could regenerate for the year ahead. As the vines began to grow, the weather
turned warm and stayed so until the end of the harvest with more than 30 days
during the summer months reaching over 30°C. The flowering happened quickly and
evenly throughout Bordeaux. Heavy rainstorms at the end of June were a welcome
respite for the parched soils although two bands of hail did considerable damage
in St. Estèphe and the Haut Médoc as they diagonally crossed the Gironde estuary
at the same time. The drought meant that the grapes were small and concentrated
which accounted for the small yields during harvest. The drought was felt
everywhere, particularly for holiday makers on the Atlantic coast where huge
fires in the pine forests of the Landes destroyed over 20,000 hectares of
forest.
So how come the wines are so good? Firstly, because
the weather was already warm during the start of the growth period, the vines
realised early on that they had to adapt to these weather conditions. They
produced less foliage as there was going to be sufficient light and
heat to
ripen their grapes and when the veraison came, they quickly changed their
efforts from vegetative growth to berry development. It may be too fanciful to
say that vines have a memory which helps them to adapt to climate change, but we
did indeed see that the vines knew how to adapt to this year's weather
conditions.
Secondly, the grapes were in perfect health with no fungal
diseases. Instead of spraying the grapes, the attention was drawn to the
architecture of the vine. Growers made sure that there was a parasol effect so
that the vines were shaded, especially on the west side of the vine rows and
only a dappled light effect could enter the canopy. They did very little leaf
stripping and then only on the east side of the vines and no green harvest. In
fact, this year, vignerons tended to leave the vines to their own devices. Their
confidence in them was rewarded.
Thirdly, throughout the summer and
autumn, the nights were fresh, creating a large temperature difference between
day and night, which many believed helped to "polish" the tannins in the skins
as the grapes expanded and contracted. This also helped to keep the vines fresh
and allowed them to rest overnight.
Finally, Bordeaux has learnt a great
deal about viticulture in these times of climate change: Pruning techniques have
changed: pruning later than in the past to avoid frost damage to the buds and
spreading the vine over a double guyot to open the vine and extend its branches.
Heavy ploughs are no longer used in the vineyards, as they could break up the
earth around the roots. Instead, electric rakes just scratch the surface, so
humidity can get underground without disturbing the soils., Mulch or cover crops
are put in the vine rows, maybe doing this once every two or three rows to keep
the balance right and the stress levels down, to make sure there was enough
water preserved underground. The microbial life around the root system has
become very important to keep the worms and the vines happy. Bordeaux vineyards
today look very different from the tidy but barren parcels of a decade or so ago
with their vegetation cut like a hedge to keep everything neat and
tidy.
Why should you buy these wines? Most importantly 2022 is a
surprisingly successful vintage with delicious, elegant, fruit and fresh wines.
Bordeaux has shown that it can make extraordinary wines in a hot and dry year
and that its vines are going to survive. If you want to buy a beautiful vintage
in the time of climate change, that has incredible aging potential, this is
it.

Vieux Chateau Certan 2022The 2022 Vieux Château Certan is s total stunner. Readers will find a magical wine, a Pomerol that satisfies both the intellectual and hedonistic senses. Vertical and explosive, with stunning presence, the 2022 VCC simply has it all. Time in the glass reveals myriad shades of nuance. Blue/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, menthol, licorice and plum literally soar out of the glass. The tannins are present but nearly buried by the wine's deep, layered fruit. But more than anything else, it is the balance, the total sense of harmony, that is most impressive. I simply can’t ask anything more of the 2022, hence its lofty and well-deserved rating. Bravo! A blend of 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon (very similar to the 2019), the 2022 Vieux Château Certan is a magical wine of exemplary harmony and balance. Offering up complex aromas of dark berries and cherries mingled with notions of exotic spices, licorice, iris, violets and loamy soil, it's full-bodied, supple and seamless, its sweet structuring tannins entirely concealed by a multidimensional core of pure, vibrant fruit. Angelus 2022This estate's shift in the direction of gentler extraction and more reductive, less overtly oaky élevage continues, and this extreme vintage only underlines that. Fermented at cool temperatures (20 to 23 degrees Celsius), and with an increasing proportion of the wine's Cabernet Franc component matured in large wooden foudres, the 2022 Angélus wafts from the glass with deep aromas of dark berries and cherries mingled with hints of iris, licorice and pencil lead. Full-bodied, deep and seamless, with a layered core of cool, vibrant fruit, powdery tannins and a long, saline finish, it's a brilliant young wine in the making. The 2022 Angélus is still very contained on the nose, therefore, for this sample, I transferred the wine several times between two glasses in order to pry it open. It has a delineated and tensile bouquet, with blackberry, briar and light marine scents percolating through with time. Hints of oyster shell emerge from the limestone soils. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and saline, with gentle grip, fine tannins and a poised, persistent finish. There is a linearity to this Angélus that I appreciate due to the 40% Cabernet Franc. It’s very minerally on the aftertaste. This is an excellent Angélus that will age perhaps more slowly than its peers. (97) NEAL MARTIN, Vinous.com

Ausone 2022The 2022 Ausone, which was the earliest-picked ever on September 5 (although that is later than Cheval Blanc) has another very intense bouquet with layers of plush blackberry, blueberry, crushed violet and incense aromas that are beautifully entwined with the 100% new oak. Hints of blood orange emerge with a few minutes in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with silky tannins and perfectly pitched acidity. The slightly higher proportion of Cabernet Franc imparts a touch more pepperiness toward the finish. You can feel this on your tongue long after it has departed. There is a surfeit of freshness on the finish. This is an outstanding Ausone that can look forward to a very long future. (98) NEAL MARTIN, Vinous.com

Canon 2022The 2022 Canon is a regal wine of total sophistication and class—aromatic, light on its feet and super-expressive. From an estate that is delivering its greatest run of vintages since the superb Post War series that preceded the frosts of 1956, the 2022 Canon is a magical wine that will be worth every effort to track down. Wafting from the glass with aromas of dark berries, wild plums and cherries mingled with hints of bay leaf, spices and violets, it's full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with huge levels of concentration, vibrant acids and beautifully refined tannins. Concluding with a long, saline finish, this pure, perfumed and ineffably complete Canon is built for the ages, even if its structural polish is such that it will be approachable at a surprisingly early age. Cheval Blanc 2022The 2022 Cheval Blanc is quite unusual in that it was made from 46 out of the 47 parcels that make up the estate, the highest proportion of blocks ever used in the Grand Vin. There is also no Petit Cheval. One block was sold in bulk, and everything else went into the Grand Vin. That's basically it. In tasting, the 2022 is a wine of sublime elegance, and yet there's a certain strictness in its vertical build that keeps things buttoned up. Time in the glass starts to release the Cabernet Franc aromatics, but this remains incredibly dense. It barely budged over the two days I followed it. All the 2022 needs is time. One of the stars of the vintage is the striking 2022 Château Cheval Blanc, a blend of 53% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon that bursts from the glass with aromas of mulberries, cherries and wild berries mingled with mint, orange zest, pencil lead, vine smoke and exotic spices. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, it's rich and gourmand, with beautifully refined tannins, lively acids and a long, saline, pungently perfumed finish. Conseillante 2022The 2022 La Conseillante is a gorgeous, racy wine. Pliant and super-expressive, La Conseillante is positively stellar. The 2022 is a vertical, statuesque Conseillante. As alluring as the 2022 is at this stage, it also clearly needs cellaring to be at its finest. Time in the glass releases the aromatics, along with brisk acids that keep things in check. Blood orange, lavender, spice, menthol and espresso linger on the sustained finish. Technical Director Marielle Cazaux turned out what is quite possibly the most elegant wine in Pomerol. The 2022 is one of my favorite recent vintages here. The 2022 was harvested from September 5th for Merlots through to the 20th, when the last Cabernet Franc was brought in. It was aged in 70% new wood, 27% once-filled barrels and 3% amphora. A blend of 87% Merlot and 13% Cabernet Franc, it unfurls in the glass with deep aromas of black raspberries and mulberries mingled with notions of rose petals, violets, orange zest and mint. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, it's velvety and enveloping, with a textural attack that segues into a multidimensional mid-palate that's framed by sweet, powdery tannins, concluding with a long, saline finish. Checking in at a very healthy pH of 3.65 and 14% alcohol, it is a beautifully supple, suave wine that retains all this estate's signature elegance but in a slightly deeper-pitched and broader-shouldered format than the profound 2020. Congratulations to winemaker Marielle Cazaux, consulting enologist Thomas Duclos, the Nicolas family led by Jean-Valmy, and all the team at La Conseillante who have firmly established this estate at the very top of Pomerol's qualitative hierarchy in recent vintages. Cos D'Estournel 2022One of the finest wines to ever pass my lips, the 2022 Château Cos D'Estournel is a monument in the making. Based on 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, and 1% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, this saturated ruby/purple-hued Saint-Estèphe offers a full-bodied, massive, opulent style as well as perfumed red, blue, and black fruits, ample spice, chocolate, graphite, and lead pencil-like aromatics, a stacked mid-palate, flawless balance, and a monster of a finish. An improved version of the 2009 (if that's possible), this is a legendary wine in the making. Hats off to Michel Reybier and technical director Dominique Arangoïts. Haut Bailly 2022The 2022 Haut-Bailly is one of the most elegant wines I have tasted here in a very long time. Dark red/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, rose petal and blood orange are all finely laced together in the glass. There's a new sense of polish at Haut Bailly these days. The 2022 is a great example of that. Readers will find a supremely finessed wine with striking fruit purity, gorgeous length and a slightly linear build that is not at all typical (in a good sense) for a warm, dry vintage. Lafite Rothschild 2022The 2022 Lafite-Rothschild is a magnificent, thrilling wine. A Lafite for the ages, the 2022 possesses off-the-charts richness and yet never loses its unique Lafiteness. It's as if all the elements are dialed up to the maximum, but without sacrificing clarity. That's quite an achievement in my book. Inky red fruit, blood orange, spice and incense are some of the many notes that build in the glass. The 2022 is a Lafite of nearly indescribable beauty, driven by a high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon and spellbinding overall balance. Leoville Las Cases 2022The nascent 2022 Léoville Las-Cases, matured in 85% new oak, instantly makes an impression and vindicates my rhapsodizing from barrel. Intense yet boasting exquisite delineation, the aromatics are endowed with immense depth, retaining those estuarine nuances, hints of blue fruit, fig and crushed violets. The palate is medium-bodied with svelte tannins. Stunningly balanced and poised, satin-like in texture yet with ample backbone and grip to guarantee longevity, this ranks amongst the best Grand Vins that I have tasted from Jean-Hubert Delon's Saint-Julien estate. One of the wines of the vintage this year is the 2022 Léoville Las Cases, a monument in the making that combines unerring classicism with unusual sensuality and charm by the standards of this estate's sometimes youthfully forbidding wines. Exhibiting deep aromas of dark berries, violets, pencil lead, rose petals and tobacco leaf, it's full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with terrific concentration, beautiful purity of fruit, abundant but refined tannins and a long, vibrant finish. On the several occasions that I tasted it, the 2022 was surprisingly open for a young Las Cases, but it wouldn't surprise me if it were to shut down after a few years in bottle. Montrose 2022The 2022 Montrose is insanely beautiful. That much is obvious. When it might be ready to drink is another question. In recent years, Montrose has acquired notable finesse in its tannins, so that is not an issue. But the 2022 is packed with tremendous density and concentration that will need time to soften. Blackberry, graphite, licorice, lavender and chocolate stain the palate in a stunning, riveting wine of the very highest level. I can only hope to be around when the 2022 starts to drink well! The 2022 Montrose is such a compelling wine that assigning it a bracketed score seems a mere formality. A brilliant terroir, impeccable viticulture, perfectly timed harvest dates and judicious extraction have aligned to deliver a monument in the making, reminiscent of a far purer, more precise, modern-day version of the 1990 vintage at this address. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries, cassis, violets, iris, pencil lead and cigar wrapper, it's full-bodied, deep and authoritative, its velvety attack segueing into a layered, elegantly muscular core that's framed by supple, powdery tannins, concluding with a long, resonant finish. A blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, this only confirms Montrose's status as a de facto first growth and unquestionably one of the contemporary Médoc's very greatest estates. Pichon Baron 2022The 2022 Pichon Baron is one of the most elegant, polished wines I have ever tasted here. Silky and refined, the 2022 is super-impressive right out of the gate. The aromatics alone are mesmerizing. Blood orange, herbs and floral notes lend notable delineation to a core of Cabernet Sauvignon fruit. As I did en primeur, I find the wine's balance nothing short of exquisite. There's more freshness and vibrancy here than in the past, along with a noticeably lower oak imprint and more sensual tannins that lend notable sophistication throughout. The Grand Vin spent 16 months in French oak barrels, 70% new, and then two months in wood vats prior to bottling. (98) ANTONIO GALLONI,Vinous.com
Beautiful fragrance, lots of fresh and ripe black and red bramble fruit - so alive and expressive on the nose with liquorice, wet stones and cedar spicing. Smooth, ample and full in the mouth, but not overly textured or plush. There's a real refinement to the tannic structure, clearly giving the frame to the wine but detailed and precise with edges of liquorice, slate, dark chocolate, cedar and tobacco. It balances richness, intensity and concentration with sleekness, bright acidity and a real charm to the juicy fruit. Rich and tense, just giving a hint of its potential, clearly powerful but totally seductive too. A sublime wine in the making. Ageing 18 months in French oak, 70% new, 600% one wine. Palmer 2022The 2022 Palmer is all class. Blackberry, mocha, spice, leather and espresso all meld together in a seamless, elegant Palmer that impresses with its sublime balance. All the elements are impeccably put together throughout. The only thing this is missing is perhaps a touch more energy. Even so, the 2022 is an exceptional Palmer. Yields were a minuscule 22 hectoliters per hectare. Small berries yielded a deep wine that needs time to fully emerge. As has been the case for a few years now, both Palmer and Alter Ego spend a year in small barrel and a second year in wood, a majority of that (65%) in cask. (98) ANTONIO GALLONI,Vinous.com
The 2022 Château Palmer is utterly brilliant, so much so that I questioned in my notes if this would challenge the 2018. A blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot, from tiny yields of 22 hectoliters per hectare, its mammoth-sized personality offers layers of blue and black fruits, notes of melted chocolate, crushed stone, and spring flowers, building, velvety tannins, and a great, great finish. While many estates commented that they extracted less in the vintage, Palmer went in a different direction and extracted more during the vinifications to provide a solid backbone to match the concentration and power of the vintage. It appears to have worked brilliantly, and hats off to Thomas Duroux for having the confidence to go his own path. He has produced a truly Grand Vin in 2022. (97-99) JEB DUNNUCK

La Mondotte 2022The 2022 La Mondotte is another heady wine in this range from the Neipperg family. Inky dark fruit, gravel, pencil shavings, iron, sage and scorched earth infuse the 2022 with notable intensity and tons of brooding, somber character. Readers will have to be patient, as this is a potent, structured Saint-Émilion. I would not plan on opening a bottle anytime soon. The 2022 is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, so a bit more Franc than in some recent years. This spent 35 days on the skins followed by 16 months in French oak, 40% new. It's a superb edition of this wine made from one of the most distinctive sites in the appellation. (97+) ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous.com

Pavie Macquin 2022The 2022 Pavie Macquin is stellar, as it was en primeur. Inky blue/purplish fruit, licorice, new leather, spice and plum run through this powerful Saint-Émilion. Silky in the glass, it boasts plush, seamless tannins and fine balance. As always, Pavie Macquin is very sexy-one of the most sensual and hedonistic wines of the vintage. Another wine that's going to flirt with perfection is the 2022 Château Pavie Macquin, and this might be the finest vintage I've ever tasted from this address. A blend of 80% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc, and a splash of Cabernet Sauvignon, it reveals an inky purple hue as well as a stunning bouquet of pure cassis, liquid black raspberries, truffle, scorched earth, and graphite. Full-bodied, concentrated, and massive on the palate, it may be the largest-scaled Pavie Macquin ever produced. But don't let that scare you off - it stays flawlessly balanced, has pure, fine-grained tannins, and a great finish. I'll be a buyer. (96-98+) JEB DUNNUCK

Tertre Roteboeuf 2022The 2022 Tertre Rôteboeuf is silky, elegant and polished. Scents of raspberry jam, mocha, cinnamon, new leather and blood orange are immediately inviting. On the palate, the 2022 is soft and caressing, but there's plenty of tannin and overall structure lurking beneath. Floral, savory and mineral overtones extend the sustained, vibrant finish. Always exotic, singular, and overflowing with character, the 2022 looks to be no exception and is full-bodied, with a layered, elegant mouthfeel, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. Pape Clement 2022The 2022 Pape Clément is a classy, elegant wine. Soaring aromatics open first. On the palate, the 2022 is vibrant and explosive, with terrific depth and exceptional balance. Today's wines here are simply striking because of their energy and verve. Those qualities help make Pape Clément one of the most changed wines in Bordeaux over the last decade or so. The 2022 Haut-Bages Libéral is huge and explosive right out of the gate. A rush of dark red cherry/plum fruit, rose petal, blood orange, incense, licorice and mocha saturates the palate. Saline notes extend the mid-palate and finish effortlessly. This is one of the most exuberant, ample wines I have tasted from Claire Villars-Lurton. I would give the 2022 a number of years in bottle to shed some baby fat. Today, it tastes almost like a barrel sample! The purity and primary intensity of the fruit is remarkable. The Haut-Bages Libéral was raised in a combination of 40% new oak, 40% once-used barrels and 20% a mix of concrete and amphora. This is one of the under-the-radar gems of 2022. Round and smooth, so pure, like silk, just so beautifully textured straight away with clear bite, bright fresh upfront fruit - tangy strawberries, raspberries and black cherries with powdery, chalky, and tense tannins giving both the frame but also a charming appeal. It's intense but controlled and finessed. Maybe lacking a touch of fruity fleshiness right now but the Cabernet is at the fore, giving the backbone and the seriousness. So well executed -a shining star of an estate with such beautiful pure wines. The pH and alcohol is low with the acidity coming from the chalk and limestone terroir, all well integrated giving an elegant, very drinkable aspect while still having underlying power and direction. I was able to taste the 2022 Château Beychevelle on multiple occasions, and it never failed to impress me. Based on 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot that will see 18 months in 70% new oak, it's one of those wines that makes you stop and say "wow" due to its purity, depth, and texture. Sporting a dense purple hue as well as lots of blueberry and black cherry fruits, it's full-bodied and has a layered, seamless mouthfeel, building yet gorgeous tannins, and subtle background notes of crushed violets, flowers, and graphite. Leoville Poyferre 2022Pre- Arrival 3 bottles available
The 2022 Léoville-Poyferré showed a lot of potential from barrel and it does so now in bottle. Interestingly, it bursts out of the blocks aromatically for a minute then settles down, gaining delineation and refinement. It is less full-throttle than other vintages and neatly hides the 14.24% alcohol. The palate is medium-bodied with a velvety-smooth entry. There is such purity here, with fine-boned tannins and nicely judged acidity, all harmonious with a peacock's tail on the finish. A mind-blowing Leoville Poyferre, probably one of the best for a long time. Huge depth and structure, showing a deep matrix of fruit full of fresh blackberries and a dash of ink and lead pencil. Such verticality on the full-bodied palate with beautiful balance and a clear finish that goes on and on for more than a minute. Great potential ahead. This was tasted at the UCGB tasting and was one of the best wines of the day. Drink after 2028. It should improve in the next 10 to 15 years.
