Bordeaux 2020 Ex-Ship Offer

Looking at the wines now from bottle, this is an incredible, classic vintage that yielded surprisingly focused, precise, and at times, firm wines that have lots of similarities to 2010, with a touch of the purity and elegance found in the 2016s. 2005 – and possibly 1998 – are also valid comparisons.

My key takeaway is that 2020 is another great vintage for Bordeaux and is a fitting cap to a trio of incredible years starting with 2018. The result of a hot, dry growing season, the 2020s are ripe, concentrated, and structured, yet surprisingly focused and pure wines that bring to mind a slightly more elegant version of 2010. JEB DUNNUCK

Two thousand-twenty is an incredibly exciting vintage for Bordeaux. After having tasted more than 800 wines for this report, my conclusion is that 2020 is by far the most consistent of the three vintages in Bordeaux’s so-called trilogy spanning 2018 through 2020. It is a year brimming with phenomenal wines at all levels, from the big names down to bottles the average consumer can still afford to purchase by the case.

In short, 2020 is a great modern-day Bordeaux vintage. From the standpoint of both peaks and overall consistency, it surpasses 2018 and 2019. Time will tell how it ultimately stacks up to 2016 and 2015. Seen through the lens of other relatively recent important vintages such as 2010, 2009 and 2005, 2020 is far more interesting. The wines are less extracted, more vibrant and, frankly, much more fun to drink. ANTONIO GALLONI

Many of the reds of 2020 are at the same quality level as highly regarded bottles from the already coveted 2019 and 2018. It may be the first time in the history of Bordeaux that we have a trilogy of super vintages.
The best reds show a combination of finesse, structure and gravity, with well-judged opulence. JAMES SUCKLING

2020 has produced a number of excellent wines and in parts can be confirmed as the conclusion of a great trilogy… the vintage also produced some of the most detailed, precise and compelling young wines I’ve ever tasted.
Comparatively, the 2020s offer a combination of the 2005 and 2016 vintages in terms of structure and refinement – more elegant and fresh than the ripe and opulent 2018s, and more focused but less immediately charming than the 2019s. It’s a trio of vintages offering something for every Bordeaux lover. DECANTER

Let's start this off with a statement that might surprise some of you.

Bordeaux is the in-form wine region in wine world right now and, for the last decade or more there's been a wave of investment that has trickled down to the most basic of wines in the zone, the end result being a slew of wines of incredibly high quality at all rungs of the price ladder that, frankly, would give anything from the New World a bit of a lesson.
On top of that, there's also a retreat from the caricature styling that so dominated the zone through the 1990s. In it's place are wines that are more transparent to their terroirs, fresher and infinitely more interesting! To underline those opening comments comes the 2020 vintage, an absolute belter!

We've just landed a brilliant set of wines that traverse the communes, the many disparate styles and the price point; from great value to some of the most revered estates in the world of wine.

I have attached a full offer arranged in alphabetical order. Below, I've also put together a couple of lists - top values and icon wines.

I highly recommend you have a crack at some of these wines, the world of cabernet blends has long lived in the shadows but all over the world the savvy are recognising the inherent value and quality available. No more so than the spiritual home of the genre, Bordeaux.

One final point. For the more highly sought after wines there are very few bottles so please act quickly if you'd like to grab something.

  1. Ausone 2020
    Ausone 2020

The 2020 Ausone is stellar. Usually a showier wine, Ausone is packed with bright acids, deep fruit and tons of supporting structure. Dark red fruit, blood orange, pomegranate, rose petal, mocha and dried herbs all race out of the glass. Deep and layered, with magnificent finesse, Ausone is lights out in 2020. What a wine. Readers lucky enough to own it are in for a thrilling ride over the next few decades. 99 ANTONIO GALLONI, vinous.com

  2. Angelus 2020
    Angelus 2020

The 2020 Angélus is shaping up to be tremendous. Bright and punchy, with terrific energy, the 2020 is more linear and focused than any recent vintages I can remember tasting. Crushed red berry fruit, iron, smoke, mint, chalk and dried herbs all build in the glass. In 2020, Angélus is less flashy than it can be. That is a very good thing, for those who can wait. Harvest took place between September 18 to 30. One of the major evolutions here in recent years has been the use of foudres to age the Cabernet Franc. Half of the Franc is now raised in large format oak, and that seems to bringing added freshness to the Grand Vin. 96-98 Antonio Galloni, VINOUS

  3. Cos D'Estournel 2020
    Cos D'Estournel 2020

The 2020 Cos d'Estournel is a wine of extreme elegance. Silky and light on its feet, the 2020 is incredibly nuanced. In fact it is without question the most finessed of all the top wines in Saint-Estèphe, showing more in common with some of its neighbors in the north of Pauillac than the more potent wines of Saint-Estèphe. Impossibly soft, silky tannins wrap around a core of dark red fruit, spice and orange zest. The 2020 is not a huge Cos, but rather a wine for readers who appreciate elegance over power. I can't wait to see how it ages. Magnificent. 97 ANTONIO GALLONI, vinous

  4. Mouton Rothschild 2020
    Mouton Rothschild 2020

The 2020 Mouton Rothschild is very clearly one of the great, great wines of the Left Bank in 2020. All the elements are in perfect balance. A wine of total sensuality and nuance, Mouton is all finesse in 2020, all elegance. An explosion of dark cherry fruit, plum, pomegranate, mint and cinnamon are all amplified. From barrel, the 2020 Mouton hinted at greatness. Today, that greatness is evident. The rich, vibrant finish is a thing of beauty. 99 ANTONIO GALLONI, vinous.com

  5. Smith Haut Lafitte Rouge 2020
    Smith Haut Lafitte Rouge 2020
The 2020 Smith Haut Lafitte is every bit as captivating as it was from barrel. Ample, rich and explosive, the 2020 offers up an exciting mélange of dark fruit, chocolate, spice, gravel, leather and dried herbs, with a touch of new oak that adds raciness. This towering, vertical Smith Haut-Lafitte won't be ready to drink for a number of years, but it is super impressive. Even with all of its intensity, the 2020 retains terrific freshness and energy. 6. Vieux Chateau Certan 2020
    Vieux Chateau Certan 2020
The 2020 Vieux Château Certan was picked from September 14 at a low yield of 30hl/ha. The nose might be even better than the 2019 with blackberry, black truffle, pencil shavings and a touch of sous-bois. The aromatics are heavenly, perhaps even more complex than the 2016. The palate is medium-bodied with a satin-textured entry and fabulous delineation. This is a Pomerol whose engine purrs like a vintage Rolls Royce. Maybe the 2019 has a touch more edginess on the finish but this is the real deal. It's a sensational, multi-dimensional Pomerol for the ages. (100) NEAL MARTIN
