Complex, subtle and concentrated on the nose at the same time. Minerally core wrapped up in cherry fruit. Lots of supple acidity and fragrant light fruit while very persistent and long. Fine grip of grainy tannins on the finish. Almost ephemeral. WALTER SPELLER

Always a stunner, the 2020 Vigna Rionda from Guido Porro doesn't disappoint. It smoothly delivers aromas and flavors of succulent raspberry, wild strawberry, cake spice and peppermint oil alongside hints of blood orange and tangy mineral. It's full-bodied and elegantly structured, with taut, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity. Strawberry shortcake, dusty spice and pepper, mint and liquorice, orange peel, and earth. It’s lively, all the sweet red fruits, almond paste, redcurrant acidity, fine sooty and tea-like tannin, really rich and red fruited, but with such presence and a sort of restrained elegance, which seems maybe contradictory, though that’s often the case with great wines. Impressive length. Guido Porro is such a stylish producer, and this wine shows that to full effect. (96) GARRY WALSH

Alessandria's 2020 Barolo Capalot is a wonderfully elegant, poised wine. It offers up hints of macerated cherry, spice, orange peel, cinnamon, dried flowers and earth. Deep and layered, yet also nicely finessed, the 2020 is super-impressive in this tasting. It's the finest wine I have tasted to date from Alessandria and a wonderful harbinger for the future. The compelling Sandrone 2020 Le Vigne opens with delicate but alluring scents of violet, rose, wild berry and aromatic herb. The Giacomo Fenocchio 2021 Bussia mesmerizes with its aromas of violet, botanical herb, forest berry, menthol and cake spice. Full-bodied and firmly structured, the utterly delicious palate boasts a great depth of flavors including juicy red cherry, raspberry preserve, cinnamon stick, crushed mint and star anise before a graphite finish, all set against a backbone of fine-grained tannins.
