  1. P & A Vin de France Grenache Syrah 2021
    P & A Vin de France Grenache Syrah 2021
The P & A wines are from our friend and Burgundy madman Nicolas Potel. These are the wines that epitomise the term vin-de-soif. These are absolutely gluggable, definitely chillable and straight-up delicious fair from the southern reached of France where Nicolas, via is network of winemaking legends sources fruit from top growers.

This little beauty is crafted by Potel's partner in crime Stephane Aviron who brings his consdiderable talents to the table. there is an elegance and purity to the wine with underlying terroir drive that shouldn't be a surprise to anyone who tried Nicola or Stephane's wines.

Wafts of raspberries, black plums and sweet spices lure you in. The core is a vibrant and buoyant mass of black and red berries, wrapped in an elegant framework. Subtle notes of rosemary come from a thoughtful use of whole bunch. This overdelivers hands down on its humble price point, no need to second guess here. GABRIELLE POY

  2. Bleasdale The Wise One Tawny 750ml
Bleasdale The Wise One Tawny 750ml
Fruitcake aromas with attractive nutty complexity; a soft touch of rancio and rather laid-back acidity makes the wine a warm and friendly style for a cold winter's evening. JAMES HALLIDAY

Ok. A man of few words on this one but let me assure you that this is straight up, bloody delicious and yes, we agree its perfect for a cold winter eve. This hidden little beauty from Bleasdale is matured in small oak casks in the rafters of the winery's hot tin roof for a minimum of 7 years before blending. The result is a uniquely Aussie inspired tawny style that is so well priced you might as well by a six pack and sip it to your hearts contents all winter long and never feel guilty.

Rammed full of clove, five-spice. Licorice root, treacle, honey, plenty of baked walnut and edged with roasted brown sugar. There is that lovely edging of dried citrus peel and fruit cake mix too. Sweet and lush but not as cloying as you might think… don't get us wrong though, its sweet, and that's how we like it.

  3. Chateau du Rouet Cuvee Reserve Rose 2021 375ml
Chateau du Rouet Cuvee Reserve Rose 2021 375ml
Never judge a book buy it's cover right? Mostly, you see the colour of this and you at least know you are on good footing to begin with. It's pale, like a blush of peach. Properly dry with a splash of sweet citrus, mandarin, ripe red grapefruit, a just tart orange aspect and then some lovely peach notes. All this is underpinned by a bright, clear, palate cleansing freshness and a nice pithy texture that licks at the sides of your mouth. It's long and energising, it both slackens the thirst with its buoyant, uplifting feel and engages the old taste buds and sets the salivary glands quivering. Who doesn't love Rose like this? It's so enjoyable to drink. ROSCOE

Rive Droite Rive Gauche Cotes du Rhone 2021
Savoury tannins and ripe black cherries with a note of liquorice prevail in this blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre and the ABV is relatively high, but the wine has balance with a fresh, lifted finish. I'd decant this for lamb chops spiked with rosemary and garlic slices, barbecued if the weather allows. Its name tells us the grapes were sourced from both banks of the Rhône River. In Praise of Shadows Mankai Red Blend 2021

    Garnacha, Monastrell, Touriga, Graciano.

So much ozone, or petrichor, here, which is so appealing. Red berries, a little liquorice and spice. Medium-bodied, at most, fresh and crisp, slightly earthy, hazelnuts, spiced poached strawberry and red cherry, emery board tannin, a distinct ‘mineral’ feel, and a cool spicy/savoury finish of brightness and excellent length. So individual. So energetic. Outstanding. Get amongst it. GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

The name for this cracking little producer is Inspired by the Japanese literary masterpiece of the same name, In Praise of Shadows is. For Rob Mack and Brett Trewartha this is somewhat of a  philosophical wine passion project sourcing the best fruit from vineyards around McLaren Vale, many of which are certified organic and bioydnamic. Lo-fi, unfined, unfiltered, and all that jazz. Ultimately though just really flippin delicious.

  9. Spinifex Grenache Gris 2023
    Spinifex Grenache Gris 2023

It’s a new plot of vineyard (on the estate) and this is the first year where there was enough crop to make/release a wine. It was fermented wild in old oak and then matured in a (not new) 1000l foudre.

Time in old oak was important here because it’s added texture to what is, at heart, a structural white wine. It’s a wine of skin and bones, stones and spices, its dryness a key part of its appeal. We’re almost into brine territory here, or stones sitting in a saline solution, perhaps. It knows what it wants, and it wants for food. This is a good, interesting wine, worth buying and drinking, and future releases will be worth following. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front

100% Garnacha from a single 4-hectare vineyard at the foot of the Sierra de La Pila, just in front of the winery The age of the vineyard is 5 years old and it is 100% property with north orientation and fresh clay soil.

Crushed raspberry and wild bracken with a hint of charry earthy that provides a counterpoint to the fresh fruit. A lovely combo of sweet and savoury that follows on the palate with a playful back and fourth between the clean red fruits and wild cherry notes. Firm and snappy with a fine cut to the tannins.

  16. Mount Mary Marli Russell RP2 2021
Mount Mary Marli Russell RP2 2021

Grenache (60%) Shiraz (25%), Mataro (10%) and Cinsault (5%). It’s in keeping with my little Grenache theme this week, except it’s from the Yarra Valley!

It’s complex and a wine of many layers. Raspberry and blackberry, plenty of perfume and spice, hazelnut, something in the way of dried herbs and earth. Medium-bodied, no shortage of red and black fruit, rose oil, but also something a little more meaty and savoury in the mix, with fresh acidity, kind of like pomegranate, fine emery board tannin grip, and a fine ‘minerally’ finish of excellent length. Outstanding in 2021. (95) GARY WALSH, The Wine Front

60/25/10/5% grenache/shiraz/mourvèdre/cinsault. The grenache spends 16 months in 1600L seasoned foudre, the rest matured in barriques (15% new for the shiraz). A wine that shows both the potential of these varieties and this blend at Mount Mary. Perfumed and spicy with red and black fruits and a little Mediterranean garrigue. Brightly fruited and with tannins that are juicy and balanced, this medium-bodied wine is already a treat to drink. PHILIP RICH, Halliday Wine Companion

  20. Artuke Finca de los Locos Rioja 2021
Artuke Finca de los Locos Rioja 2021
Finca de Los Locos is an old, single vineyard wine grown high on slopes of the Cantabrian mountians north of the town of Banos. Arturo and Kike de Miguel’s grandfather planted the vines in the 1950s, though other farmers of the day thought he was mad to work such a difficult, rock-strewn slope when so much land was available on the flat plains of the Rioja Valley floor. Sixty years later however, this single parcel is consistently producing some of the finest examples of terroir-focused wine in the region. Made with 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano, Finca de Los Locos is black-fruited, decidedly cool climate and massively over delivers for the price. ALIMENTARIA

  21. Duseigneur Lirac Antares 2021
    Duseigneur Lirac Antares 2021

Looking at the 2021s from barrel, the 2021 Lirac Antares shows the fresher style of the vintage yet still brings solid fruit and texture. Spice, violets, flowers, and lavender as well as both red and black fruits define the nose, and it's balanced, has fine tannins, and lots to like. JEB DUNNUCK

Antarès is the main star of the constellation of Scorpio. One of the basic principles of biodynamics is to work in harmony with cosmic rhythms. Antarès is a selection of vines located on hillsides facing North, at the Western end of the Lirac appellation, at an altitude of 160m. The vines are 50 years old. The harvest is fully de-stemmed. Each variety is vinified separately using  natural yeasts. The Grenache is aged in cement vats, the Mourvèdre in old French oak demi-muids  for 12 months.

60% Grenache, 40% Mouvèdre farmed organically (Certified).Notes of strawberry, black raspberries, pine, sandalwood and a hint of ground black pepper in this ripe but restrained blend. A full-bodied and concentrated wine that maintains remarkable vibrance and acidity throughout. Fine-grained tannins accentuate its youthful appeal. Supple mouthfeel, we love the generosity of mid palate filled with ripe black berries and blue fruits and spices. Beautiful Lirac for all lovers of great Southern Rhone reds.

  22. Mont Redon Chateauneuf du Pape 2021 375ml
Mont Redon Chateauneuf du Pape 2021 375ml

The deep nose of elderberries, wet earth and licorice pulls you into this full-bodied, concentrated but very elegant Chateauneuf. Very fine, focused tannins that counterpoint the juiciness on the mid-palate and drive the very long, bright and minerally finish. A grenache-based cuvee that is 60% from vineyards with galet cobblestones, 10% on sandy soils and the rest from limestone soil. Drink or hold. JAMES SUCKLING

Ripe black fruits, licorice, cloves and wood smoke present the 2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Medium to full in body, the 2021 offers good concentration and freshness yet demands at least three more years in bottle to further integrate the grippy tannins. That said, there’s enough substance to ensure positive development with extended bottle-aging. NICOLAS GREINACHER, Vinous

  23. Alvaro Palacios Camins Vins Vells Priorat Garnacha 2021
Alvaro Palacios Camins Vins Vells Priorat Garnacha 2021
Vibrant, youthful and brambly nose that is very fruit-expressive, with lots of red cherries, pomegranate, potpourri and hints of oyster-shell minerality and coffee that extend to a crunchy, medium-bodied palate, framed by juicy, fresh tannins. Bright, silky and unassumingly approachable now. Drink through to 2025. JAMES SUCKLING

The more modern and different 2021 Camins del Priorat, a blend of 40% Garnacha, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 15% Cariñena and 6% Syrah, is a little more balsamic with some herbal notes and some dusty tannins. It's powerful with 14.5% alcohol and has good balance. This fermented 100% destemmed in concrete and stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and matured in oak barrels and vats for six months. 24. Domaine Font de Courtedune Chateauneuf du Pape 2021
Domaine Font de Courtedune Chateauneuf du Pape 2021

Domaine Font de Courtedune – for now, at least – is something of an insider’s secret. With vineyards right next door to Château Rayas, and sharing the same sandy soils, this tiny Châteauneuf-du-Pape estate produces outstanding wines that are a fraction of the price of those of its famous neighbour. The vineyards have long been owned by the Charrier family, but the fruit was sold to the local co-operative until 1997, when René Charrier established the domaine. Today his children Caroline and Frédéric are in charge.

Everything here is joyously traditional. The old vines (some of which are over 100 years old) are all farmed sustainably, with as little intervention as possible; a philosophy that follows through into the winery. Everything is whole-bunch, fermented and aged in concrete vats, with no oak to be found in the winery at all. They work almost exclusively with Grenache, with just a splash of Mourvèdre, Counoise, Cinsault, and Terret Noir to add extra spice and body to the wines.

An outstanding 2021 Chateauneuf ethereal and fresh, super sleek and wonderfully pretty. It's all about the pure fruit, lilting, sweet cherries, crushed raspberry and a touch of white pepper spice sprinkled in all the right spots. Lovely wine.

  25. Mont Redon Chateauneuf du Pape 2022
Mont Redon Chateauneuf du Pape 2022

A well-composed, structured and refined Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The nose reveals notes of dark cherries, cassis, dried thyme, black pepper and a touch of violets. It's full-bodied with fine, firm tannins. The frame of tannins shape up the palate, with dark berries at the core. Plenty of spices and grilled herb character on the palate bring vibrancy and drive. Robust and focused, and the funneled finish has length. Try after 2028.  (96) JAMES SUCKLING

The 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape is brought up in used Burgundy barrels and stainless steel and is 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 8% Mourvèdre, and the rest a mix of permitted varieties. Black raspberries, subtle cassis, graphite, pepper, and beautifully integrated oak define this classy beauty, and it's medium to full-bodied and concentrated, with building, ripe tannins and a great finish. This is a gorgeous wine in the making, but it will probably take 7-8 years to hit maturity. This could be up there with the legendary Mont-Redons. Tasted twice with consistent results. (93-95+) JEB DUNNUCK

60 % Grenache Noir, 30 % Syrah, 8 % Mourvèdre & 2 % Cinsault, Counoise, Muscardin & Vaccarèse. Hand harvested and 100 % destemmed before fermentation over 15 to 20 days, with extraction via plunging the cap as required. Following the malolactic, a rigorous selection is performed and batches that do not meet the Estate’s quality criteria are sold in bulk. The selected batches are matured for 12 months in approximately 50 % barrels and 50 % stainless steel tanks. At this point another selection is made and any lesser batches are again sold in bulk. The final blend is then assembled in tank and matured for a further 6 months before bottling, then a further 4 to 6 months in bottle before it is available for shipping.

  28. Clos Mogador Priorat 2021
    Clos Mogador Priorat 2021

The vineyard is a 20Ha amphitheater of crumbling slate. The vines are at 350 metres and are surrounded by mountains up to 1,200 metres high and the vineyard’s lower extremes are adjacent to the Siurana River.

The eponymous red 2021 Clos Mogador fermented with some 30% full clusters trying to give it more freshness (but without noticing the stems) with a long maceration (40 to 50 days) and (almost) no punching down, with less extraction. There's been a progressive change in the vineyard (they removed the south-facing Cabernet Sauvignon), and they increased Cariñena (around 30%), which in the future will be almost as much as Garnacha. It has aromatic complexity and a beautiful texture. It matured in 2,000-liter oak foudres and a small part in barrel and later in concrete. The wine has 14% alcohol and has the Priorat, Mogador and Mediterranean character (wet slate, graphite, aromatic herbs) with more elegance and freshness. The tannins are also a lot more elegant, and the wine comes through as very balanced. They produced 35,000 bottles of this. It was bottled in June 2023. Drink 2025-2036 (98) LOUIS GUTIERREZ, wineadvocate.com

… liqueur-like aromas of blackcurrant and plum, along with earthy notes and hints of iron and blood. Dry and compact, it ows with ne-grained tannins, a dusty texture and a juicy, avorful mouthfeel. The nish is exceptionally long, with nuanced complexity. This is one of those rare wines that can shift one's perception of what’s possible in the Priorat region. Clos Mogador is one of the few wineries that put Priorat on the wine map in the early 1990s, and the 2021 vintage is yet another example that justies that recognition. (97) JOAQUIN HIDALGO, vinous.com

Ripe red fruits, blackberries, toast, smoke, spices and warm earth. So alive in the glass, it never seems to start changing and brightening as it opens up.
